Book excerpt: From the Preface by V. S. VARADARAJAN: “These volumes of the Collected Papers of Harish-Chandra are being brought out in response to a widespread feeling in the mathematical community that they would immensely benefit scholars and research workers, especially those in analysis, representation theory, arithmetic, mathematical physics, and other related areas. lt is hoped that in addition to making his contributions more accessible by collecting them in one place, these volumes would help focus renewed attention on his ideas and methods as well as lend additional perspective to them.” The papers are arranged chronologically, Volume I collects Harish-Chandra's articles written between 1944 and 1954.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects the papers published by A. Borel from 1983 to 1999. About half of them are research papers, written on his own or in collaboration, on various topics pertaining mainly to algebraic or Lie groups, homogeneous spaces, arithmetic groups (L2-spectrum, automorphic forms, cohomology and covolumes), L2-cohomology of symmetric or locally symmetric spaces, and to the Oppenheim conjecture. Other publications include surveys and personal recollections (of D. Montgomery, Harish-Chandra, and A. Weil), considerations on mathematics in general and several articles of a historical nature: on the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, on N. Bourbaki and on selected aspects of the works of H. Weyl, C. Chevalley, E. Kolchin, J. Leray, and A. Weil. The book concludes with an essay on H. Poincaré and special relativity. Some comments on, and corrections to, a number of papers have also been added.

Book Synopsis Collected Papers by : Bertram Kostant
Download or read book Collected Papers written by Bertram Kostant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-15 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than five decades Bertram Kostant has been one of the major architects of modern Lie theory. Virtually all his papers are pioneering with deep consequences, many giving rise to whole new fields of activities. His interests span a tremendous range of Lie theory, from differential geometry to representation theory, abstract algebra, and mathematical physics. It is striking to note that Lie theory (and symmetry in general) now occupies an ever increasing larger role in mathematics than it did in the fifties. Now in the sixth decade of his career, he continues to produce results of astonishing beauty and significance for which he is invited to lecture all over the world. This is the first volume (1955-1966) of a five-volume set of Bertram Kostant's collected papers. A distinguished feature of this first volume is Kostant's commentaries and summaries of his papers in his own words.
Book Synopsis Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics by : Martha A. Tucker
Download or read book Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics written by Martha A. Tucker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference for librarians, mathematicians, and statisticians involved in college and research level mathematics and statistics in the 21st century. We are in a time of transition in scholarly communications in mathematics, practices which have changed little for a hundred years are giving way to new modes of accessing information. Where journals, books, indexes and catalogs were once the physical representation of a good mathematics library, shelves have given way to computers, and users are often accessing information from remote places. Part I is a historical survey of the past 15 years tracking this huge transition in scholarly communications in mathematics. Part II of the book is the bibliography of resources recommended to support the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. These are grouped by type of material. Publication dates range from the 1800's onwards. Hundreds of electronic resources-some online, both dynamic and static, some in fixed media, are listed among the paper resources. Amazingly a majority of listed electronic resources are free.

Download or read book Lie Groups written by J.J. Duistermaat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This (post) graduate text gives a broad introduction to Lie groups and algebras with an emphasis on differential geometrical methods. It analyzes the structure of compact Lie groups in terms of the action of the group on itself by conjugation, culminating in the classification of the representations of compact Lie groups and their realization as sections of holomorphic line bundles over flag manifolds. Appendices provide background reviews.
Book Synopsis Arithmetic and Analytic Theories of Quadratic Forms and Clifford Groups by : Goro Shimura
Download or read book Arithmetic and Analytic Theories of Quadratic Forms and Clifford Groups written by Goro Shimura and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, award-winning author Goro Shimura treats new areas and presents relevant expository material in a clear and readable style. Topics include Witt's theorem and the Hasse principle on quadratic forms, algebraic theory of Clifford algebras, spin groups, and spin representations. He also includes some basic results not readily found elsewhere. The two principle themes are: (1) Quadratic Diophantine equations; (2) Euler products and Eisenstein series on orthogonal groups and Clifford groups. The starting point of the first theme is the result of Gauss that the number of primitive representations of an integer as the sum of three squares is essentially the class number of primitive binary quadratic forms. Presented are a generalization of this fact for arbitrary quadratic forms over algebraic number fields and various applications. For the second theme, the author proves the existence of the meromorphic continuation of a Euler product associated with a Hecke eigenform on a Clifford or an orthogonal group. The same is done for an Eisenstein series on such a group. Beyond familiarity with algebraic number theory, the book is mostly self-contained. Several standard facts are stated with references for detailed proofs. Goro Shimura won the 1996 Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement for "his important and extensive work on arithmetical geometry and automorphic forms".

Book excerpt: A Course in Abstract Harmonic Analysis is an introduction to that part of analysis on locally compact groups that can be done with minimal assumptions on the nature of the group. As a generalization of classical Fourier analysis, this abstract theory creates a foundation for a great deal of modern analysis, and it contains a number of elegant resul

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Mathematics written by Michiel Hazewinkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
