Book excerpt: Many classes of materials that exhibit interesting characteristics in the modulation of the electronic and magnetic properties when they are made of more than one compound, often arranged in multilayers and superlattices. In such cases, the electronic, electric, and magnetic properties of the multilayer, as well as their densities-of-states, are vastly different from the properties of the constituent materials, with the most important features often located at the interfaces. Specifically, perovskite nickelates are examples of materials that lie at the heart of correlated electron physics. Prior studies have been done on superlattices that contain multilayers of two perovskites. Specifically, it has been shown that LaNiO3 (LNO) undergoes a Mott metal-insulator transition when sandwiched between the layers of SrTiO3 (STO). However, even with prior theoretical simulations and experimental studies, no conclusion has been reached so far as to the exact reason for such a transition. To further the investigation of these ideas, we are undertaking a detailed study of the electronic structure of a LaNiO3/SrTiO3 superlattice with 10 repeats of [4 unit-cell LNO/3 unit-cell STO] bilayer grown on an (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 substrate. To provide a complete characterization of this superlattice, it is crucial to characterize the core levels of the atoms at the interface, as well as to measure the depth-dependent density of states and the element-specific magnetization through the interface. The standing-wave photoemission technique provides a unique capability for characterizing the LNO/STO interfaces by depth-resolving the electronic structure of the superlattice, particularly in its momentum-resolving form of standing-wave angle-resolved photoemission using soft x-rays in the ca. 1 keV regime. The main advantages of SW-XPS are its non-destructiveness, large effective attenuation length, and the enhanced depth resolution for buried interfaces via standing-wave excitation, which makes use the interference of the incoming and outgoing x-rays setting up a standing wave inside and outside the multilayer. This standing wave can be subsequently varied in depth by either changing the incidence angle or the photon energy. Within the multilayer, a strong reflection at the first-order Bragg condition amplifies the standing wave. Being able to tune the standing wave by varying incidence angle, thus generating a rocking curve, or by varying the photon energy, permits a local enhancement or suppression of the regions directly at the interfaces between two materials or in the central regions of the two materials. In this study, we are employing x-ray photoemission spectroscopy specifically, the soft x-ray standing-wave-excited angle-resolved photoemission, together with soft- and hard- x-ray photoemission measurements of core levels, with data collected at three different beamlines (BLs 7.0.1 and 9.3.1 at the Advanced Light Source at LBNL in Berkeley, CA and BL15XU at SPring-8 in Japan). More precisely, we are demonstrating several aspects of using the depth selectivity of soft x-ray standing-wave photoemission (SW-XPS), and standing-wave angle-resolved photoemission (SWARPES), for studying the electronic structure of core levels and the valence band in buried layers and interfaces, including momentum-resolved electronic structure. This study is coupled with complementary characterization using more depth sensitive hard x-ray excitation (several keV), and with optical modeling. We are confirming our experimental findings for the LNO/STO multilayer by comparison with the theoretical calculations of band structures and densities of states. We further show that the behavior of the Ni 3d e[subscript g] and t2[subscript g] states near the Fermi level, as well as those at the bottom of the valence bands, is very similar to recently published results for an La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 superlattice that was studied using the same technique, which further validates this approach and our conclusions. As a specific point, we make direct comparison of the electronic structure of the two superlattices studied with the same technique and highlight the similarities between the e[subscript g] and t2[subscript]g states of the transition metal Mn and Ni components. We also discuss differences between the two systems, which we attribute to the greater difficulty of growing LNO/STO, which can lead to rougher, less well-defined interfaces. The fact that SWARPES can, even for this case, still provide interface-specific momentum-resolved information is encouraging for its future applications to other multilayer systems.

Book excerpt: Nanometer-scale materials and devices are under intense scrutiny at present and often depend on buried interfaces between two media. We have studied theoretically a novel method, x-ray standing-wave (SW) photoelectron spectroscopy, which is used to non-destructively investigate buried nanometer-scale interfaces. The SW is generated via Bragg reflection from a multilayer mirror, on which the multilayer sample is grown. One layer of the sample is grown as a wedge, permitting the scanning of the SW through the layers above it. Prior experiments have focused on soft x-rays at 1 keV or less. However, advances in instrumentation have recently overcome difficulties with intensity and resolution involving hard x-ray SW experiments up to 10 keV or more. In order to support future experimental studies on these samples, we have investigated theoretically the systematics of SW experiments as the photon source is increased from 1 keV to 10 keV. We have studied a prototypical tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sample, whose layers from the top layer down to the substrate are: a 1 Å pseudo-carbon contaminant layer of Be (chosen simply to give a slightly different core binding energy from the C in the multilayer mirror), 20 Å of MgO, 20 Å of a 70:30 alloy of CoFe, and finally a 78:22 IrMn alloy wedge that spans from 100 Å to 400 Å. The mirror substrate consists of 30 repetitions of B4C (20 Å thick)/W (20 Å thick). The photon energies explored are 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 keV. The photoelectron intensities in each layer investigated are Be1s, Mg2s, O1s, Co2p3/2, Fe2p3/2, Ir4f7/2, Mn2p3/2, B1s, C1s, and W4f7/2. Via x-ray optical theory, we examine the reflectivity giving rise to the SW. Constructive and destructive interference associated with internal reflection at the top and bottom of the mirror and the wedge cause Kiessig fringes, which are more important for higher energies. For lower energies, the highest absolute peak intensities stem from the oxide layer; for the high energies (8 and 10 keV), the highest intensities arise from the wedge layer due to its higher thickness. The modulations of the 40 Å-period SW roughly double in going from 1 keV to 10 keV. These results will aid in the design, understanding, and analysis of future standing-wave photoelectron spectroscopy experiments.

Book excerpt: To anyone who is interested in surface chemical analysis of materials on the nanometer scale, this book is prepared to give appropriate information. Based on typical application examples in materials science, a concise approach to all aspects of quantitative analysis of surfaces and thin films with AES and XPS is provided. Starting from basic principles which are step by step developed into practically useful equations, extensive guidance is given to graduate students as well as to experienced researchers. Key chapters are those on quantitative surface analysis and on quantitative depth profiling, including recent developments in topics such as surface excitation parameter and backscattering correction factor. Basic relations are derived for emission and excitation angle dependencies in the analysis of bulk material and of fractional nano-layer structures, and for both smooth and rough surfaces. It is shown how to optimize the analytical strategy, signal-to-noise ratio, certainty and detection limit. Worked examples for quantification of alloys and of layer structures in practical cases (e.g. contamination, evaporation, segregation and oxidation) are used to critically review different approaches to quantification with respect to average matrix correction factors and matrix relative sensitivity factors. State-of-the-art issues in quantitative, destructive and non-destructive depth profiling are discussed with emphasis on sputter depth profiling and on angle resolved XPS and AES. Taking into account preferential sputtering and electron backscattering corrections, an introduction to the mixing-roughness-information depth (MRI) model and its extensions is presented.

Book excerpt: The main motivation behind this thesis has been to determine both the advantages and the disadvantages ofthe soft X-ray application of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The investigation of a weil known system, Ag(001), enables us to discuss several questions such as the role of the photon momentum, the applicability ofthe fiee-electron-like final state approximation and the role ofphonons. The polarisation of the incoming light has also been exploited. The choice of such a system also cornes from our des ire to compare the results with calculations of angle-resolved photoemission spectra in this energy range. The anomalous low temperature properties of Ce-based compounds are generally related to the Kondo effect. Original results have been obtained by investigating the valence band of three iso-structural single crystalline Ce compounds, CeCu2Ge2, CeNi2Ge2 and CeC02Ge2. The location of the Ce M5 absorption edge within the soft X-ray energy range is exploited in order to isolate the 4f contribution to the spectra. Added to this, the use of relatively high incoming photon energies allows minimising the surface contribution. Temperature dependent, resonant, angle-resolved and angle-integrated photoemission measurements have been performed. The former are in qualitative agreement with the single impurity Anderson model, whereas the latter suggest the importance of taking the lattice into account.
