Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a necessary supplement to the theoretical exploration into semantic rhetoric, particularly a breakthrough in the study of the relationship between the source domain and target domain involved in the construction of semantic rhetorical discourse. The study focuses on rhetorical expressions constructed by means of semantic variation or deviation of concepts. Based on the holistic cognitive pragmatic model and the framework of impartment and inheritance of connotation and denotation, this book constructs a new framework, the Annotation-Denotation Relevance-Inheritance Model (ADRIM) to explain the construing of semantic rhetoric. Besides, rooted in the Index Hypothesis Theory and the research paradigm of affordance derivation in language comprehension, three ERP experiments on metaphor, irony, and pun, are conducted to demonstrate the psychological reality that people activate possible feature extraction in the process of understanding semantic rhetoric. With those sample analyses and experiments, the feasibility and operability of ADRIM are proved. The book unfolds a combined approach of speculative research and empirical research, and can provide a new methodological alternative for semantic rhetorical studies in different languages. This title will be an essential read to students and scholars of Linguistics, East Asian Studies, and social workers who are interested in Language Studies in general.

Book excerpt: When a woman inherits her estranged mother’s bookstore in London’s Primrose Hill, she finds herself thrust into the pages of a new story—hers—filled with long-held family secrets, the possibility of new love, and, perhaps, the single greatest challenge of her life. When Valentina Baker was only eleven years old, her mother, Eloise, unexpectedly fled to her native London, leaving Val and her father on their own in California. Now a librarian in her thirties, fresh out of a failed marriage and still at odds with her mother’s abandonment, Val feels disenchanted with her life. In a bittersweet twist of fate, she receives word that Eloise has died, leaving Val the deed to her mother’s Primrose Hill apartment and the Book Garden, the storied bookshop she opened almost two decades prior. Though the news is devastating, Val jumps at the chance for a new beginning and jets across the Atlantic, hoping to learn who her mother truly was while mourning the relationship they never had. As Val begins to piece together Eloise’s life in the U.K., she finds herself falling in love with the pastel-colored third-floor flat and the cozy, treasure-filled bookshop, soon realizing that her mother’s life was much more complicated than she ever imagined. When Val stumbles across a series of intriguing notes left in a beloved old novel, she sets out to locate the book’s mysterious former owner, though her efforts are challenged from the start, as is the Book Garden’s future. In order to save the store from financial ruin and preserve her mother’s legacy, she must rally its eccentric staff and journey deep into her mother’s secrets. With Love from London is a story about healing and loss, revealing the emotional, relatable truths about love, family, and forgiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kareem was a young boy living in Nigeria, and all he wanted was an education. Kareem had seen the power of education. In his home country, having an education meant you were a master; having no education meant you were a slave or dimwitworthy of being looked down upon. The hope for education and a job in government or commerce was overwhelming. Kareems journey to attain an education would not be simple. The joy of going to class was cut short when he was prematurely pulled from school due to his familys financial hardship. With no hope in sight, Kareem abandoned his fathers intention of teaching him to be a bike repairman. He became a homeless walker of the streets, barely surviving for years until finally, thirty years later, he arrived in the United States. Growing Up amid Uncertainties is the memoir of an indigent African persevering against social, political, and economic hardship to fulfill the dream of a good education and a better life. Kareem faced many obstaclesincluding the assassination of his brotherbefore reaching American soil. This is his story: an example of the importance of public school education for the betterment of individual lives as well as society at large.

Book excerpt: Thread of Life: An Adoption Story is the true story of an adopted childs journey to find his birth parents. The adoption process can often leave many unanswered questions for the adoptee, the adopted parents, and even the eventual offspring of an adopted child. It has been said that adoption is more like a marriage than a birth, with two or more individuals, each with their own unique mix of needs, patterns, and genetic history, coming together with love, hope, and commitment for a future together. You become a family not because you share the same genes but because you share love for each other. Mike Doirons original intent was to try to fill in some of the gapsgenealogically, medically, and perhaps even mentallyas he began his adult life following university. The endeavor took him down a path of self-discovery and adventure. When he began to chronicle what he had learned, he decided that he wanted to share his findings with others. For him, Thread of Life is not meant to be a guidebook for families of adoption, but rather a documented true story sharing personal insights from his own journey to answer the questions many adopted children ponder as they become adults.
