Book Synopsis Bookmarks Are People Too! #1 by : Henry Winkler
Download or read book Bookmarks Are People Too! #1 written by Henry Winkler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hank stars the same Hank as in the bestselling Hank Zipzer series, only this time he's in 2nd grade! Hank is a kid who doesn't try to be funny, but he somehow always makes the kids in his class laugh. He's pretty bad at memorizing stuff, and spelling is his worst subject. (But so are math and reading!) In the first book in this new series, Hank's class is putting on a play, and Hank wants the lead part: Aqua Fly. But he freezes in his audition and can only buzz like a fly. His teacher creates a special part for Hank, a silent bookmark. This may seem like an insignificant role, but when his enemy, Nick McKelty, freezes during the performance, it's up to Hank to save the play!
Book Synopsis Bullies and Mean Girls in Popular Culture by : Patrice A. Oppliger
Download or read book Bullies and Mean Girls in Popular Culture written by Patrice A. Oppliger and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerous anti-bullying programs in schools across the United States have done little to reduce the number of reported bullying instances. One reason for this is that little attention has been paid to the role of the media and popular culture in adolescents' bullying and mean-girl behavior. This book addresses media role models in television, film, picture books, and the Internet in the realm of bullying and relational aggression. It highlights portrayals with unproductive strategies that lead to poor resolutions or no resolution at all. Young viewers may learn ineffective, even dangerous, ways of handling aggressive situations. Victims may feel discouraged when they are unable to handle the situation as easily as in media portrayals. They may also feel their experiences are trivialized by comic portrayals. Entertainment programming, aimed particularly at adolescents, often portray adults as incompetent or uncaring and include mean-spirited teasing. In addition, overuse of the term "bully" and defining all bad behavior as "bullying" may dilute the term and trivialize the problem.
Book Synopsis Invisible Inkling by : Emily Jenkins
Download or read book Invisible Inkling written by Emily Jenkins and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning author Emily Jenkins and New York Times bestselling illustrator Harry Bliss comes the first book in a sweet, quirky chapter book series about a boy and his invisible friend, Inkling. Perfect for fans of Clementine and Ivy and Bean. This series is a great choice for emerging readers who are ready for chapter books. The thing about Hank's new friend Inkling is, he's invisible. No, not imaginary. Inkling is an invisible bandapat, a creature native to the Peruvian Woods of Mystery. (Or maybe it is the Ukrainian glaciers. Inkling hardly ever gets his stories straight.) Now Inkling has found his way into Hank's apartment on his quest for squash, a bandapat favorite. But Hank has bigger problems than helping Inkling fend off maniac doggies and searching for pumpkins: Bruno Gillicut is a lunch-stealing, dirtbug caveperson and he's got to be stopped. And who better to help stand up to a bully than an invisible friend?

Book excerpt: When a horrific school shooting turns into a hostage situation, only Gemma Capello, the NYPD’s most skilled negotiator, has a chance to save innocent lives and end the crisis . . . Talking a suspect into sending his hostages out alive is NYPD Detective Gemma Capello’s specialty. Alerted to a school shooting at her nephew’s Brooklyn high school, she is one of the first officers on-scene. Detective Sean Logan and the Apprehension Tactical Team arrive next and immediately enter the school to apprehend the two shooters, while Gemma remains outside to help students evacuate. But as time stretches on, and there is no word of her nephew, her fear builds that he is one of the lost. One of the two shooters has holed up with a group of students and their teacher as hostages. Gemma steps in to negotiate for their survival. Floors away and armed with only her wits and the sound of her voice to convince him, Gemma fights for control of the situation even as tactical leadership pressures her for a more aggressive strategy. But for Gemma, it’s not about a quick solution. It’s about moving heaven and earth to bring everyone in that classroom home. And she’ll do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. Praise for the NYPD Negotiators series “Tense and tightly plotted, Exit Strategy pulls you in and doesn't let go. A compelling page-turner.” —New York Times bestselling author Marc Cameron
Download or read book The Bully Society written by Jessie Klein and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice's Outstanding Academic Title list for 2013 Through interviews and case studies, Klein develops an explanation for bully behavior in America's schools In today’s schools, kids bullying kids is not an occasional occurrence but rather an everyday reality where children learn early that being sensitive, respectful, and kind earns them no respect. Jessie Klein makes the provocative argument that the rise of school shootings across America, and childhood aggression more broadly, are the consequences of a society that actually promotes aggressive and competitive behavior. The Bully Society is a call to reclaim America’s schools from the vicious cycle of aggression that threatens our children and our society at large. Heartbreaking interviews illuminate how both boys and girls obtain status by acting “masculine”—displaying aggression at one another’s expense as both students and adults police one another to uphold gender stereotypes. Klein shows that the aggressive ritual of gender policing in American culture creates emotional damage that perpetuates violence through revenge, and that this cycle is the main cause of not only the many school shootings that have shocked America, but also related problems in schools, manifesting in high rates of suicide, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-cutting, truancy, and substance abuse. After two decades working in schools as a school social worker and professor, Klein proposes ways to transcend these destructive trends—transforming school bully societies into compassionate communities.

Book excerpt: On Honey Beaumont's sixteenth birthday, he heard about a group of adventurers who had stopped a crime ring of highway robbers in New Texas. After sixteen years in an abusive home and then getting adopted just to become a "house-boy," Honey decided to leave his past behind and join The Adventurer's Guild. The Guild is a group of people who stand for justice and serve the commoner, as long as they can pay. Honey wanted nothing more but to travel around the world helping people. Illiterate and ill-prepared for a war-torn world, Honey embarks on the journey of a lifetime with the Guild. With newfound skills and friends in tow, he needs to find the strength and courage to return to his abusive home and save the love of his life. Embarking on a journey of a lifetime, being a hero is harder than Honey ever imagined, but at least he has his friends by his side to help him save the day. ------ Once upon a time, an unlikely hero was born out of servitude. Honey Beaumont, our hero, strived to do right by everyone and see justice prevail no matter the consequence. He dreamt of the intrepid Adventurer's Guild and helping those who can't help themselves. Every day our hero persevered the wrath of Byron, his owner. Helping those around him doesn't fill Byron's pockets, bringing out anger in his boss. One day, Byron brutally attacks Honey after a wealthy client offers to help Honey leave the life of servitude and be free. After the attack, Honey was scarred, disfigured, and with a grudge. He begrudgingly left his home and the love of his life behind to move into a new and luxurious home. Honey mingles amongst those in the new house and learns about the world's inequalities, especially between the nobodies and humans. But with his new owner forbidding him from being independent, Honey has no other choice but to leave this new luxurious life behind. Freedom for Honey meant joining the Adventure's Guild, becoming a hero, and helping his family leave the horrible place he used to call home. Will Honey be strong enough to take on Byron? Only time will tell. —— "The combination of dystopian pre-war chaos with the familiarity of the Old West creates an adventurous and threatening backdrop for the plot. Book excerpt: Tailgated. Pressured from behind. Passed on the right. Cut off by an aggressive driver. Given the finger for no apparent reason. Road rage is a real phenomenon of our ever-increasing pace of life. Richard Gerber ratchets road rage up a notch in this novel of terror on the highways surrounding Oklahoma City. Detective Nick Witkowski is called to a horrific multivehicle accident in which a mother and her daughter are incinerated in the wreckage. Overcome by grief, the family's father, Kevin Packard, struggles to deal with an atrocity that plunges him into his mind's darkest recesses. When the driver responsible for the wreck, an alcoholic, becomes an accident victim himself, no one is particularly sympathetic. The case turns, however, when the medical examiner discovers this was no routine accident. Instead, the drunk was drugged, his neck broken by what appears to be a professional killer. Other rude and aggressive drivers begin to meet the same fate, and Witkowski's instincts kick into high gear. Nick and his team move quickly to match wits with the mentally deranged killer who cruises the streets extracting revenge. The killer's own road rage begins to unravel when Road Butcher moves to its stunning conclusion.
