Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft safety is a function of several parameters including flight stability and control. An air vehicle must be stable if it is to remain in flight. Moreover, it must be controllable as well as trimmable. This book delivers the fundamental concepts of stability and control, as well as their associated areas. It explains airworthiness, dynamic and static stability, longitudinal, lateral, and directional control, flight measurement devices and sensors, and control surfaces which are necessary topics to be considered during the aircraft design process. This book is mainly focused on air vehicles' stability features and control capabilities. The aircraft addressed in this book is a rigid-body point mass object. Describing the complete motion of a rigid-body aircraft, this book covers equations of motion with six degrees of freedom (DOF)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of flight dynamics requires a thorough understanding of the theory of the stability and control of aircraft, an appreciation of flight control systems and a grounding in the theory of automatic control. Flight Dynamics Principles is a student focused text and provides easy access to all three topics in an integrated modern systems context. Written for those coming to the subject for the first time, the book provides a secure foundation from which to move on to more advanced topics such as, non-linear flight dynamics, flight simulation, handling qualities and advanced flight control. - Additional examples to illustrate the application of computational procedures using tools such as MATLAB®, MathCad® and Program CC® - Improved compatibility with, and more expansive coverage of the North American notational style - Expanded coverage of lateral-directional static stability, manoeuvrability, command augmentation and flight in turbulence - An additional coursework study on flight control design for an unmanned air vehicle (UAV)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early machines to today's sophisticated aircraft, stability and control have always been crucial considerations. In this second edition, Abzug and Larrabee again forge through the history of aviation technologies to present an informal history of the personalities and the events, the art and the science of airplane stability and control. The book includes never-before-available impressions of those active in the field, from pre-Wright brothers airplane and glider builders through to contemporary aircraft designers. Arranged thematically, the book deals with early developments, research centers, the effects of power on stability and control, the discovery of inertial coupling, the challenge of stealth aerodynamics, a look toward the future, and much more. It is profusely illustrated with photographs and figures, and includes brief biographies of noted stability and control figures along with a core bibliography. Professionals, students, and aviation enthusiasts alike will appreciate this readable history of airplane stability and control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discussion of the structural methods for obtaining lateral stability discloses the remarkable influence of the constant fuselage and wing proportions to the yawing moments. For the effectiveness of modifications in vertical tail surfaces and tail length, these quotas - little observed heretofore, in this connection - are decisive. This also applies to the amount of dihedral of the wing with regard to the roll stability of the complete wing already existing without angle of the dihedral.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Soaring Dissected Albatrosses fly over the oceans in swooping, curving flight gliding thousands of kilometres in search of food, mostly without flapping their wings. This is known as dynamic soaring, which is the use of the energy of the horizontal wind to sustain speed and height. It is different from the soaring flight of most other birds and gliders which use the vertical motion of the air to maintain or gain height. Since the 1880's, a time before manned gliding flight had been achieved, the mechanism of dynamic soaring has been poorly explained by the Rayleigh cycle or the wind gradient theory. However, there is more to dynamic soaring than the wind gradient and furthermore, the true nature of albatross flight has only recently been revealed by filming and GPS tracking. Dynamic Soaring Dissected takes up the discussion where it was left in the 19th century and explains how aircraft and birds fly. It looks at albatross flight through the lens of electronic tracking and takes us on a foraging trip with an albatross in long-distance soaring flight. In the Windward Turn Theory, it describes the mechanism of dynamic soaring and the hidden effect of the wind on a bird or an aircraft in flight. It explains the way that albatrosses are able to turn this effect to their advantage and how they are able to dynamic soar crosswind, upwind and downwind. It also describes how radio-control gliders can achieve huge speeds in circling flight and settles the perennial debate on the Myth of the Downwind Turn and what really happens when an aircraft turns downwind and ends up in a stall and spin accident.
