Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handy Methods of Geodetic Astronomy for Land Surveyors, 1921 To find the Mean Time of any Star's Culmination at any Meridian. Rule 1. To the Mean Time at 0 hours Sidereal Time in the Ephemeris on the previous day, or the given day, add the Star's Right Ascension reduced to Mean Time by Table p. 79 Whitaker. (If the two quantities make more than 24 hours take the previous day, if less, take the given day.) Rule 2. From the Star's Right Ascension, increased if necessary by 24 hours, deduct the Sidereal Time at Mean Noon in the Ephemeris, the result will be a Sidereal interval, which, reduced to Mean Time, will be the answer. When the Meridian is not the same as Greenwich, the Mean Time, Apparent Time, or Sidereal Time, have all to be corrected for the difference of Longitude, expressed in time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handy Methods of Geodetic Astronomy for Land Surveyors, 1921 Whitaker's Almanack, a book of mathematical tables, and a 20-inch slide-rule, the Surveyor can utilise his ordinary 6-inch transit-theodolite, or even one of less size, to determine his geographical position with considerable accuracy. Philip's cardboard Planispheres, published for either Hemisphere, are an inexpensive and most useful addition. The particular feature of this pamphlet is, however, to show how, by means of some rapidly made diagrams, the stars available at time and place can be at once identified, and the observation facilitated. Book excerpt: "Cadastral surveys are performed to create, mark, and define, or to retrace the boundaries between abutting land owners, and, more particularly, between land of the Federal Government and private owners or local governments. As referred to here, cadastral surveys were performed only by the General Land Office during its existence and by the Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management is the only agency that is currently authorized to determine the boundaries of the public lands of the United States. Proper understanding of the basis for performance of cadastral surveys includes an understanding of the history of the public land surveys. An understanding of that history requires some consideration of the people who performed these surveys and of the people whose land was affected by them. These chapters were written to be used as an aid in training cadastral surveyors in the application of surveying principles. The learner is expected to gain from the factual material on survey laws and their formation, as well as from a study of the people who performed the surveys. Many of the men who had an important role in the history of cadastral surveying are still living, but only those who have retired are included in the present document."--Foreword.

Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Geophysics, Astrophysics, and Astronomy provides a lexicon of terminology covering fields such as astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, relativity, geophysics, meteorology, Newtonian physics, and oceanography. Authors and editors often assume - incorrectly - that readers are familiar with all the terms in professional literature. With over 4,000 definitions and 50 contributing authors, this unique comprehensive dictionary helps scientists to use terminology correctly and to understand papers, articles, and books in which physics-related terms appear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Palm Pilots and iPods, PCs and laptops, the term "computer" referred to the people who did scientific calculations by hand. These workers were neither calculating geniuses nor idiot savants but knowledgeable people who, in other circumstances, might have become scientists in their own right. When Computers Were Human represents the first in-depth account of this little-known, 200-year epoch in the history of science and technology. Beginning with the story of his own grandmother, who was trained as a human computer, David Alan Grier provides a poignant introduction to the wider world of women and men who did the hard computational labor of science. His grandmother's casual remark, "I wish I'd used my calculus," hinted at a career deferred and an education forgotten, a secret life unappreciated; like many highly educated women of her generation, she studied to become a human computer because nothing else would offer her a place in the scientific world. The book begins with the return of Halley's comet in 1758 and the effort of three French astronomers to compute its orbit. It ends four cycles later, with a UNIVAC electronic computer projecting the 1986 orbit. In between, Grier tells us about the surveyors of the French Revolution, describes the calculating machines of Charles Babbage, and guides the reader through the Great Depression to marvel at the giant computing room of the Works Progress Administration. When Computers Were Human is the sad but lyrical story of workers who gladly did the hard labor of research calculation in the hope that they might be part of the scientific community. In the end, they were rewarded by a new electronic machine that took the place and the name of those who were, once, the computers.
