Book excerpt: In handicrafts and artisanal products, industry has witnessed both a technological shift and a renewed interest among customers, especially after the challenges and limitations of mass production became evident under the COVID-19 pandemic. This book portrays the worldwide development of this trend, the nature of entrepreneurship in these industries, and the unique challenges and opportunities that entrepreneurs face. The book shows how these businesses are gaining a resurgence due to customers preferring ethical, regional, and climate-friendly options to fulfill their needs. The chapters focus on artisan entrepreneurs' contribution to society by not only creating businesses, but also in terms of tourism development. The book reiterates that artisan entrepreneurs enable crucial cultural connections with tradition due to their affinity to a region, city, village, or community. Small business and entrepreneurship researchers as well as policymakers in the cultural sector would benefit from this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has always been a land of crafts and artisans. Although the country is now moving on the fast track of modern industrial growth modelled on western capitalist economies, the handcrafted production continues to coexist. In some parts of the country the craft tradition is so deep rooted that thousands of people, who possess traditional skills, continue to produce a variety of handicrafts to meet the changing nature of the demand in domestic as well as export markets. This is true especially of Kerala State, which has a rich craft tradition and economic rationale for adoption of labour-intensive techniques of production in view of its acute unemployment problem. Literature on the subject, however, lacks studies based on primary surveys of economic conditions of major handicrafts in the State. Towards closing this gap, this book presents abridged versions of selected study-reports on handicrafts prepared by scholars sponsored by the Kerala Research Programme on Local Level Development (KRPLLD) of the Centre for Development Studies. These reports are presented in the form of case studies on micro-level problems of specific handicrafts and their artisans. A macro-overview of structure, growth and problems of the handicraft sector and socio-economic conditions of artisans based on the analysis of data from secondary sources provides the backdrop for the case studies. The findings of the micro-level analysis of specific crafts, when looked at in the macro-perspective, help in sharpening our overall understanding of the problems of the handicrafts industry and the poor economic conditions of artisans, who still remain the backbone of the handicraft industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Addresses the cultural conditions under which artisan work provides a feasible income alternative to other employment options * Offers a methodology for assessing the socio-economic impacts of fair trade artisan work After agriculture and tourism, artisan work provides the next most significant source of income in many developing countries. Yet because of its image as a soft or frivolous industry, some politicians and development professionals question whether the handcraft sector is worthy of investment. An opposing view holds that the creation of sustainable employment opportunities for poor people and a positive alternative to mass production outweighs the costs. Until now, the debate has been hampered by a lack of industry data. The apparel group MarketPlace: Handwork of India serves as the perfect case study to provide this missing information. Like many fair trade companies, it has dual goals: to generate income in the global marketplace and foster the empowerment of the low-income workers who run and staff the business. In conducting interviews with MarketPlace’s artisans, managers, and founders, Littrell and Dickson produced an in-depth socio-economic audit of the group over time. The result, Artisans and Fair Trade, provides a quantitatively and qualitatively illuminating study of fair trade impacts and a methodology that is sure to inform current assessment practices in social entrepreneurship and business social responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together two decades of research into the process of commercialization of the folk crafts of Thailand: the conditions of its emergence, the parties involved in its development, the changes in the processes and organization of production which accompany it, the channels through which commercialized craft products are marketed, the nature of the audiences which they reach, and the transformations in appearance and meaning which the products undergo as a result of their commercialization. Each chapter deals with a specific issue in a particular context, but virtually all of them relate to one or another of these principal aspects of the process of commercialization. Part I explores the commercialization of hill tribe textiles, particularly those of the Hmong refugees from Laos. Part II presents a series of case studies of the various ways in which the products of lowland Thai "craft villages" became commercialized.
