Download or read book Springer-Verlag: History of a Scientific Publishing House written by Heinz Sarkowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-10-07 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chronicle written only by someone for whom the present important. Goethe, Maximen und Reflexionen The second volume of our company's history differs from the first in several ways. With a great appreciation of history, Heinz Sarkowski has impressively reconstructed the company cor- spondence, which is fortunately almost completely preserved, and made it speak. * There is an inexhaustible amount of c- respondence pertaining to the period I have taken it upon myself to cover, and working through it properly not only would have required many years, but also would have detracted from the immediacy of the account. Thus, I decided to proceed from personal experience, to describe what has happened and to provide details gleaned from the correspondence. I have - counted here by no means only my own, but rather the personal experiences of the many company members and employees who are mentioned below. With the founding of the New York firm, developments branch out, becoming parallel but separate, and the change from one scene to another repeatedly interrupts the continuing course of events and the chronological flow of the report. In this connection, the occasional repetition of certain facts was - avoidable. In some places, however, it seemed more appropriate not to interrupt particular lines of development, but to describe them in continuity without regard to specific periods of time.

Book Synopsis Stimulus and Response by : Joseph Wilder
Download or read book Stimulus and Response written by Joseph Wilder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulus and Response: The Law of Initial Value provides an introduction to the study and application of the Law of Initial Value (L.I.V.). This book discusses the general considerations in the L.I.V. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the L.I.V. as a biological law since stimulus and response are common to all biology. This text then explains the discovery and study of the L.I.V., which originated in a study of the autonomic nervous system. Other chapters consider the role of L.I.V., which is important in any kind of non-specific therapy than in specific therapy and for the on-specific effects, often called "side-effects", of specific therapies. This book discusses as well a series of examples of the application of L.I.V. to physical stimuli. The final chapter deals with the social significance of L.I.V. This book is a valuable resource for psychologists, sociologists, scientists, pharmacologists, physiologists, neuropsychiatrists, and internists.
Book Synopsis Human Physiology by : Robert F. Schmidt
Download or read book Human Physiology written by Robert F. Schmidt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book first appeared in English in 1983, as a translation of the 20th Edition of the long-established German textbook Physi%gie des Menschen. In this new English edition the text has been fundamentally "rejuvenated", to bring it up to date with the rapid advances in many areas of physiology and to incorporate many helpful suggestions from both readers and colleagues. In its scope and didac tic goals, the book remains as we set forth in the Preface to the First Edition, which follows. First, the content was substantially reorganized. The general aspects of cell physiol ogy and intercellular communication, which underlie the functions of all organs, were extracted from the various chapters and brought together in a separate intro ductory section. We are most grateful to our colleague J. DUDEL for undertaking this task. The second step was to make the text more concise in several places (for instance, the motor and somatovisceral systems previously occupied two chapters and have now been condensed into one). By these processes of condensation and distillation of the passages on general cell physiology, space was made for the necessary addi tions and expansions, with only a slight change in the overall length of the book.
