Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centennial decade was an era of ambivalence, the United States still unresolved about the incomprehensible damage it had wrought over four years of Civil War, and why. Philadelphia’s 1876 Centennial Exhibition -- a spectacular international event celebrating one hundred years of American strength, unity, and freedom -- took place in the immediate wake of this trauma of war and the failures of Reconstruction as a means to restore power and patriotism in the nation’s struggle to rebuild itself. The Unfinished Exhibition, the first comprehensive examination of American art at the Centennial, explains the critical role of visual culture in negotiating memories of the nation’s past that conflicted with the optimism that Exhibition officials promoted. Supporting novel iconographical interpretations with myriad primary source material, author Susanna W. Gold demonstrates how the art galleries and the audiences who visited them addressed the lingering traumas of battle, the uneasy re-unification of North and South, and the persisting racial tensions in the post-Emancipation era. This careful consideration of the visual record exposes the complexities of the war’s impact on Americans and clarifies how the Centennial art exhibition affected a nation still finding its direction at a critical moment in its history.

Book excerpt: Published in Philadelphia in 1876, this volume in the American Antiquarian Cookbook Collection provides information about recipes and other cultural information from the 100 years between 1776 and 1876, divided into four sections: Cookery, Medical Department, Farming and Agriculture, and Events, and was published to celebrate the nation’s first centennial. 1776-187: The Centennial Cook Book and General Guide contains over 1,000 recipes gathered by author Mrs. Ella E. Myers, who states in the preface, “To compile and issue a work of this kind that would be perfect, has been my particular aim, and, I believe that I have succeeded.” Myers confirms that “each and every” recipe has been “carefully analyzed and tested by me” to ensure the highest of quality. Furthermore, Myers also states that the recipes were designed to only use quantities and ingredients absolutely necessary, and because of this, will save readers significant money. Besides just recipes and frugality, the hefty tome also contains sections on medicinal cures, planting and farming, and historical events of Philadelphia. Complete with some of the author’s own recipes (marked as such), 1776-1876 includes dishes such as Common Sense Biscuit, Corn Meal Muffins, Orange Biscuits, and Potato Fritters. With tested, economical recipes as well as medicinal and agricultural tips, 1776-1876: The Centennial Cook Book provides an accurate, informative, and intriguing picture of American lifestyles in the first 100 years of the United States. This edition of 1776-1876: The Centennial Cook Book and General Guide was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The Society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection includes approximately 1,100 volumes.

Book Synopsis Designing the Centennial by : Bruno Giberti
Download or read book Designing the Centennial written by Bruno Giberti and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1876 United States Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia was not only the United States' first important world's fair, it signaled significant changes in the very shape of knowledge. Quarrels between participants in the exhibition represented a greater conflict as the world transitioned between two different kinds of modernity—the Enlightenment of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the High Modern period of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. At the center of this movement was a shift in the perceived relationship between seeing and knowing and in the perception of what makes an object valuable—its usefulness as a subject of study and learning versus its ability to be bought and sold on the market. Arguments over design of the Centennial reflected these opposing viewpoints. Initial plans were rigidly structured, dividing the exhibits by country and type. But as some exhibitors became more interested in the preferences of their audience, they adopted a more modern stance. Objects traditionally displayed in isolated glass boxes were placed in fictive context—the necklace draped over a mannequin, the vase set on a table in a model room. As a result, the audience could more easily perceive these items as commodities suitable for their own environments and the fair as a place to find ideas for a material lifestyle. Designing the Centennial is a vital first look at the design process and the nature of the display. Bruno Giberti uses official reports of the U.S. Centennial Commission and photographs of the Centennial Photographic Company, as well as the ephemera of the exhibition and literary accounts in books, magazines, and newspapers to illuminate how the 1876 fair revealed changes to come: in future world's fairs, museums, department stores, and in the nature of display itself.
