Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Landscape and Food by : Joshua Zeunert
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Landscape and Food written by Joshua Zeunert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the turn of the millennium, there has been a burgeoning interest in, and literature of, both landscape studies and food studies. Landscape describes places as relationships and processes. Landscapes create people’s identities and guide their actions and their preferences, while at the same time are shaped by the actions and forces of people. Food, as currency, medium, and sustenance, is a fundamental part of those landscape relationships. This volume brings together over fifty contributors from around the world in forty profoundly interdisciplinary chapters. Chapter authors represent an astonishing range of disciplines, from agronomy, anthropology, archaeology, conservation, countryside management, cultural studies, ecology, ethics, geography, heritage studies, landscape architecture, landscape management and planning, literature, urban design and architecture. Both food studies and landscape studies defy comprehension from the perspective of a single discipline, and thus such a range is both necessary and enriching. The Routledge Handbook of Landscape and Food is intended as a first port of call for scholars and researchers seeking to undertake new work at the many intersections of landscape and food. Each chapter provides an authoritative overview, a broad range of pertinent readings and references, and seeks to identify areas where new research is needed—though these may also be identified in the many fertile areas in which subjects and chapters overlap within the book.
Book Synopsis Cities in South Asia by : Crispin Bates
Download or read book Cities in South Asia written by Crispin Bates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation has long historical roots in South Asia, but economic liberalisation has led to uniquely rapid urban growth in South Asia during the past decade. This book brings together a multidisciplinary collection of chapters on contemporary and historical themes explaining this recent explosive growth and transformations on-going in the cities of this region. The essays in this volume attempt to shed light on the historical roots of these cities and the traditions that are increasingly placed under strain by modernity, as well as exploring the lived experience of a new generation of city dwellers and their indelible impact on those who live at the city’s margins. The book discusses that previously, cities such as Mumbai grew by accumulating a vast hinterland of slum-dwellers who depressed wages and supplied cheap labour to the city’s industrial economy. However, it goes on to show that the new growth of cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Madras in south India, or Delhi and Calcutta in the north of India, is more capital-intensive, export-driven, and oriented towards the information technology and service sectors. The book explains that these cities have attracted a new elite of young, educated workers, with money to spend and an outlook on life that is often a complex mix of modern ideas and conservative tradition. It goes on to cover topics such as the politics of town planning, consumer culture, and the struggles among multiple identities in the city. By tracing the genealogies of cities, it gives a useful insight into the historical conditioning that determines how cities negotiate new changes and influences. There will soon be more mega cities in South Asia than anywhere else in the world, and this book provides an in-depth analysis of this growth. It will be of interest to students and scholars of South Asian History, Politics and Anthropology, as well as those working in the fields of urbanisation and globalisation.
Book Synopsis The Urban Masterplanning Handbook by : Eric Firley
Download or read book The Urban Masterplanning Handbook written by Eric Firley and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly illustrated reference tool, this handbook provides comparative visual analysis of major urban extensions and masterplans around the world. It places an important new emphasis on the processes and structures that influence urban form, highlighting the significant impact that public or private landownership, management and funding might have on shaping a particular project. Each of the book’s 20 subjects is rigorously analysed through original diagrams, scale drawings and descriptive texts, which are complemented by key statistics and colour photography. The case studies are presented in order of size rather than date or geographical location. This offers design professionals, developers and city planners, as well as students of architecture and urban design informed organisational and formal comparisons, leading to intriguing insights. A wide geographical range of contemporary and historic masterplans are featured. These encompass European projects from the 19th century to the present day: Belgravia in London, Sarphatipark in Amsterdam, Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, La Défense Seine Arche in Paris and Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm. In North America, the postwar development of Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan is also the subject of a case study. More recent and ongoing international urban schemes are included, such as Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, Downtown Dubai and the New Central Business District in Beijing.

Book Synopsis Redefining Indian Smart & Sustainable Cities by : Charanjit S Shah
Download or read book Redefining Indian Smart & Sustainable Cities written by Charanjit S Shah and published by I K International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2015-06-06 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redefining Smart & Sustainable Cities, although has been conceived much earlier and has been continually refined over and over, the recent announcement of 100 Smart Cities by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi, and the spate of events thereafter, has made the release of the book rather accelerated. It unfolds for its readers the thus-far little-known story about smart cities that have existed since centuries and what the existing cities can learn from them. The author has taken interesting habitat traits and important data points right from prehistoric times to the modern day. Parallels have been drawn from various parts of the globe cutting across time - right from the Stone Age to the modern Digital Age. The authors have critically analyzed and shown that since the problems had the same set of root causes the solutions can also lie among some of the thriving and sustainable modern-day smart cities of the world. In fact, through careful extrapolation of habitat aspects the author has shown that many of the sustainable smart cities today have undergone similar deterioration for at least some time before these cities were restored and made truly smart. Each chapter weaves into it text and explanations written in a direct and simple manner and is interspersed with interesting pictures, drawings, infographics, and facts and figures directly relevant to the topic under discussion. This makes the book a very engaging and interesting read.
