The book uniquely combines both operative day case urology and diagnostic urology into a practical and comprehensive summary of the most common ‘day case’ urological procedures, in a form that is concise and relevant to urological residents, consultants or nurses. This is a handy reference guide for all urologists - whether in the UK, Europe or the US - who find themselves doing 'office' based urology work, i.e. diagnostic work and minor surgical procedures irrespective of what training program they followed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although urology is a surgical specialty, it has become apparent that changes in health care delivery and financing have led to an increasing volume of care being provided by urologists in their offices. A major part of the revenue of a urology practice depends on office production and efficient management. To have a successful practice, the produc tive, committed urologist must have a thorough understanding of the procedures and problems that need to be dealt with in the office. Moreover. the urologist must play an active role in the administration and business aspects of running the office. Surprisingly, very little has been written about the office practice of urology. Office Urology: The Clinician's Guide presents a fresh, practical, and concise text book covering the vital issues that the urologist must face on a daily basis in the office. The initial chapters of the textbook cover the critical aspects of managing the urologic office, such as principles of management, marketing the practice, proper billing and coding, advanced information systems, and important legal issues. The book is not intended to review in detail the academic aspects of the various pathologies pertaining to urology, which have been well covered in several other textbooks. Instead, the clinical chapters deal with practical issues, such as selecting appropriate treatment and counsel ing patients on the optimal therapy for the problems that the urologist frequently man ages. The individual authors have demonstrated expertise in their fields.

In the past ten years, the field of endourology has expanded beyond the urinary tract to include all urologic minimally invasive surgical procedures. Recent advancements in robotic and laparoscopic bladder surgery make this one of the fastest moving fields in medicine. Book excerpt: The branch of medicine that is concerned with the surgical management of the diseases of the male and female urinary system and abnormalities of the male reproductive organs is called urology. The organs comprising the urinary system are closely linked with those of the reproductive tract. Therefore, any pathological condition affecting one is often seen to affect the other as well. This places several urological conditions under the spectrum of genitourinary disorders. Urological surgery is concerned with the management of bladder and prostate cancer, congenital abnormalities, stress incontinence, kidney stones and conditions arising due to traumatic injury. Transplant urology is an important area of urological surgery. This book discusses the fundamentals as well as modern approaches of urological surgery. The topics included herein on urological surgery are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. A number of latest researches have been included to keep the readers up-to-date with the global concepts in this area of study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The color photographs and illustrations appearing in select monographs over the past decade represent a significant advance in surgical commu nication. Previously, black and white renderings were standard because color printing had not been perfected and its cost was prohibitive. We be lieve the gradual change from black and white etchings and reproductions to detailed color illustrations represents a tremendous twentieth century achievement. In our own urologic practices it became evident that the use of black and white sketches for teaching operative urology, while helpful, left too much to the surgeon's imagination. Even the dimension of depth, produced by varying the intensity of shading, often was inadequate in demonstrat ing subtle surgical details in a fossa or bed. Since color photography recently has been used to demonstrate oper ative techniques, we climbed on the bandwagon and photographed in color many of the major operative procedures. However, the reflection of light caused by normal tissue fluid significantly reduces the clarity of photo graphs. Not infrequently, the crucial operative step is obscured by light reflected on a trickle of blood. Even when meticulous care is taken to ir rigate and clean the surgical field, the tissue sheen obscures portions of the field. Color paintings by a gifted artist are not only unique, but can be extraordinary; the vividness with which subtleties can thus be portrayed cannot be matched by photography, black and white or color.
