Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a geometric theory of complex analytic integrals representing hypergeometric functions of several variables. Starting from an integrand which is a product of powers of polynomials, integrals are explained, in an open affine space, as a pair of twisted de Rham cohomology and its dual over the coefficients of local system. It is shown that hypergeometric integrals generally satisfy a holonomic system of linear differential equations with respect to the coefficients of polynomials and also satisfy a holonomic system of linear difference equations with respect to the exponents. These are deduced from Grothendieck-Deligne’s rational de Rham cohomology on the one hand, and by multidimensional extension of Birkhoff’s classical theory on analytic difference equations on the other.

Book excerpt: The subject of this book is the higher transcendental function known as the confluent hypergeometric function. In the last two decades this function has taken on an ever increasing significance because of its use in the application of mathematics to physical and technical problems. There is no doubt that this trend will continue until the general theory of confluent hypergeometric functions becomes familiar to the majority of physicists in much the same way as the cylinder functions, which were previously less well known, are now used in many engineering and physical problems. This book is intended to further this development. The important practical significance of the functions which are treated hardly demands an involved discussion since they include, as special cases, a number of simpler special functions which have long been the everyday tool of the physicist. It is sufficient to mention that these include, among others, the logarithmic integral, the integral sine and cosine, the error integral, the Fresnel integral, the cylinder functions and the cylinder function in parabolic cylindrical coordinates. For anyone who puts forth the effort to study the confluent hypergeometric function in more detail there is the inestimable advantage of being able to understand the properties of other functions derivable from it. This gen eral point of view is particularly useful in connection with series ex pansions valid for values of the argument near zero or infinity and in connection with the various integral representations.

Book excerpt: Because of the numerous applications involved in this field, the theory of special functions is under permanent development, especially regarding the requirements for modern computer algebra methods. The Handbook of Special Functions provides in-depth coverage of special functions, which are used to help solve many of the most difficult problems in physics, engineering, and mathematics. The book presents new results along with well-known formulas used in many of the most important mathematical methods in order to solve a wide variety of problems. It also discusses formulas of connection and conversion for elementary and special functions, such as hypergeometric and Meijer G functions.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to develop a new approach which we called the hyper geometric one to the theory of various integral transforms, convolutions, and their applications to solutions of integro-differential equations, operational calculus, and evaluation of integrals. We hope that this simple approach, which will be explained below, allows students, post graduates in mathematics, physicists and technicians, and serious mathematicians and researchers to find in this book new interesting results in the theory of integral transforms, special functions, and convolutions. The idea of this approach can be found in various papers of many authors, but systematic discussion and development is realized in this book for the first time. Let us explain briefly the basic points of this approach. As it is known, in the theory of special functions and its applications, the hypergeometric functions play the main role. Besides known elementary functions, this class includes the Gauss's, Bessel's, Kummer's, functions et c. In general case, the hypergeometric functions are defined as a linear combinations of the Mellin-Barnes integrals. These ques tions are extensively discussed in Chapter 1. Moreover, the Mellin-Barnes type integrals can be understood as an inversion Mellin transform from the quotient of products of Euler's gamma-functions. Thus we are led to the general construc tions like the Meijer's G-function and the Fox's H-function.

Book excerpt: This revised and expanded new edition will continue to meet the needs for an authoritative, up-to-date, self contained, and comprehensive account of the rapidly growing field of basic hypergeometric series, or q-series. Simplicity, clarity, deductive proofs, thoughtfully designed exercises, and useful appendices are among its strengths. The first five chapters cover basic hypergeometric series and integrals, whilst the next five are devoted to applications in various areas including Askey-Wilson integrals and orthogonal polynomials, partitions in number theory, multiple series, orthogonal polynomials in several variables, and generating functions. Chapters 9-11 are new for the second edition, the final chapter containing a simplified version of the main elements of the theta and elliptic hypergeometric series as a natural extension of the single-base q-series. Some sections and exercises have been added to reflect recent developments, and the Bibliography has been revised to maintain its comprehensiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Series for Scientists and Engineers is a handbook of mathematical series for scientists and engineers and includes tables analogous to tables of integrals. The method of expanding a function in a series is described, and the most common expansions and sums are given. Most of the series are valid for complex values of the variable, and the symbols z, ?, ? always denote a complex variable. A glossary of symbols is included. Comprised of three parts, this book begins with an introduction to some basic rules for operations with series, focusing on convergence tests and operations with convergent series. Expansion methods and some summation methods are also considered. The second part focuses on the expansions of frequently used functions in various series, and includes chapters that discuss rational and irrational algebraic expressions; trigonometric functions and logarithmic functions; exponential functions and hyperbolic functions; and Legendre polynomials and functions. The third part lists sums of series, arranged according to the features of the general term in the series, such as series involving only natural numbers; series of algebraic functions; series of Bessel functions and related functions; and series of Legendre functions. This monograph is intended for scientists and engineers as well as mathematicians.
