Book Synopsis Practical Handbook of the Biology and Molecular Diversity of Trichoderma Species from Tropical Regions by : Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee
Download or read book Practical Handbook of the Biology and Molecular Diversity of Trichoderma Species from Tropical Regions written by Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the right pathway to solve the controversial identifications of some Trichoderma species on the basis of sampling procedures, slide culture techniques, macroscopic and microscopic analysis, and molecular tools. Most species of the genus Trichoderma grow rapidly in artificial culture and produce large numbers of small green or white conidia from conidiogenous cells located at the ends of conidiophores. The morphological characters are reported to be variable to a certain degree in their color, shape of conidia, conidiophore, pustules, and phialade. These characteristics allow a comparatively easy means of identification of Trichoderma as a genus but the species concept is difficult to deduce and there is considerable confusion over the application of specific names. This work provides an essential link between data and taxa as a means to verify the taxonomic characters of the strains sequenced, and macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. Otherwise, a species level identification study cannot be corrected or uncorrected, and the user has to rely on the person perhaps making a mis-identification.
Book Synopsis Genetics and Biotechnology by : J. Philipp Benz
Download or read book Genetics and Biotechnology written by J. Philipp Benz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 452 pages. Many novel techniques based on Next Generation Sequencing have sped up the analysis of fungi and major advances have been made in genome editing, leading to a deeper understanding of the genetics underlying cellular processes as well as their applicability. At the same time, the relevance of fungi is unbroken, both due to the serious threats to human health and welfare posed by fungal pests and pathogens, and to the many benefits that fungal biotechnology can offer for diverse emerging markets and processes that form the basis of the modern bioeconomy. With regard to these advances, the first section of this volume, Genetics, illustrates the basic genetic processes underlying inheritance, cell biology, metabolism and “lifestyles” of fungi. The second section, Biotechnology, addresses the applied side of fungal genetics, ranging from new tools for synthetic biology to the biotechnological potential of fungi from diverse environments. Gathering chapters written by reputed scientists, the book represents an invaluable reference guide for fungal biologists, geneticists and biotechnologists alike.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Fungal Biotechnology by : M. Wainwright
Download or read book An Introduction to Fungal Biotechnology written by M. Wainwright and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Fungal Biotechnology M. Wainwright, Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Sheffield, UK Mycelial fungi and yeasts have long been important to man through their use in baking and brewing. More recently these organisms have been exploited further through their use in the production of antibiotics and biochemicals such as citric acid. Since the introduction of technology which enables these organisms to be genetically engineered, the practical applications of fungi have increased more dramatically. Fungi now play a more important role in the manufacture of a wide range of products by fermentation, in agriculture through their use as pest and pathogen control agents and as growth enhancers, in environmental management and in the food industry. Previous texts on fungal biotechnology have been largely restricted to the role of these organisms in the fermentation industry. By contrast, this book presents a comprehensive and wide-ranging introduction to the use of fungi in various areas of biotechnology emphasising their recent use in, for example, the bioremediation of polluted soils, fossil fuel conversion, and their use as biological control agents and inoculants in agriculture. An Introduction to Fungal Biotechnology is well illustrated and written in a readable and easily accessible style. Although it is particularly suitable for undergraduate students, this book will also be of interest to postgraduate students and research workers who require an overview of the traditional and more recent practical applications of fungi and insight into potential areas of their future use.
Book Synopsis Handbook on Sourdough Biotechnology by : Marco Gobbetti
Download or read book Handbook on Sourdough Biotechnology written by Marco Gobbetti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bread and leavened bakery products have been essential to human nourishment for millennia. Traditionally, bread production has relied on the use of sourdough as a leavening agent and to impart a characteristic quality to baked goods. In recent years, improved understanding of the biodiversity and microbial ecology of sourdough microbiota, the discovery of new species, the improved management and monitoring of its meta-community and the commercialization of innovative products have vastly expanded the potential of sourdough fermentation for making baked goods. For example, raw materials such as cereals, pseudo-cereals, ancient grains, and gluten-free substrates, as well as a large number of baked good varieties (e.g., typical and industrial breads, sweet baked goods, gluten-free products) may benefit from advances in sourdough fermentation. In addition, biotechnological tools and culture properties have been discovered to improve both the shelf life and the sensory and textural qualities of baked goods, as well as their nutritional and health-promoting properties. Now in its second edition, the Handbook on Sourdough Biotechnology remains the only book dedicated completely to sourdough biotechnology with the contribution of the most experienced researchers from the field. It reviews the history of sourdough and the potential of sourdough fermentation in the production of bread and baked goods. A thorough discussion of the various processing steps includes the chemical properties of the raw matter, the taxonomy, diversity, and metabolic properties of starter yeasts and lactic acid bacteria, and the effects of sourdough fermentation on the shelf life and the sensory, textural, nutritional, and health-promoting properties of baked goods.
