This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1074 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revision and extension of my 1995 Sourcebook of Control Systems Engineering. Because of the extensions and other modifications, it has been retitled Handbook of Control Systems Engineering, which it is intended to be for its prime audience: advanced undergraduate students, beginning graduate students, and practising engineers needing an understandable review of the field or recent developments which may prove useful. There are several differences between this edition and the first. • Two new chapters on aspects of nonlinear systems have been incorporated. In the first of these, selected material for nonlinear systems is concentrated on four aspects: showing the value of certain linear controllers, arguing the suitability of algebraic linearization, reviewing the semi-classical methods of harmonic balance, and introducing the nonlinear change of variable technique known as feedback linearization. In the second chapter, the topic of variable structure control, often with sliding mode, is introduced. • Another new chapter introduces discrete event systems, including several approaches to their analysis. • The chapters on robust control and intelligent control have been extensively revised. • Modest revisions and extensions have also been made to other chapters, often to incorporate extensions to nonlinear systems.

This book was released on 2007-11-14 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast majority of control systems built today are embedded; that is, they rely on built-in, special-purpose digital computers to close their feedback loops. Embedded systems are common in aircraft, factories, chemical processing plants, and even in cars–a single high-end automobile may contain over eighty different computers. The design of embedded controllers and of the intricate, automated communication networks that support them raises many new questions—practical, as well as theoretical—about network protocols, compatibility of operating systems, and ways to maximize the effectiveness of the embedded hardware. This handbook, the first of its kind, provides engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, and students a broad, comprehensive source of information and technology to address many questions and aspects of embedded and networked control. Separated into six main sections—Fundamentals, Hardware, Software, Theory, Networking, and Applications—this work unifies into a single reference many scattered articles, websites, and specification sheets. Also included are case studies, experiments, and examples that give a multifaceted view of the subject, encompassing computation and communication considerations.

Book excerpt: The trusted handbook—now in a new edition This newly revised handbook presents a multifaceted view of systems engineering from process and systems management perspectives. It begins with a comprehensive introduction to the subject and provides a brief overview of the thirty-four chapters that follow. This introductory chapter is intended to serve as a "field guide" that indicates why, when, and how to use the material that follows in the handbook. Topical coverage includes: systems engineering life cycles and management; risk management; discovering system requirements; configuration management; cost management; total quality management; reliability, maintainability, and availability; concurrent engineering; standards in systems engineering; system architectures; systems design; systems integration; systematic measurements; human supervisory control; managing organizational and individual decision-making; systems reengineering; project planning; human systems integration; information technology and knowledge management; and more. The handbook is written and edited for systems engineers in industry and government, and to serve as a university reference handbook in systems engineering and management courses. By focusing on systems engineering processes and systems management, the editors have produced a long-lasting handbook that will make a difference in the design of systems of all types that are large in scale and/or scope.

Book excerpt: This handbook brings together diverse domains and technical competences of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) into a single, comprehensive publication. It is intended for researchers, practitioners, and students/educators who require a wide-ranging and authoritative reference on MBSE with a multidisciplinary, global perspective. It is also meant for those who want to develop a sound understanding of the practice of systems engineering and MBSE, and/or who wish to teach both introductory and advanced graduate courses in systems engineering. It is specifically focused on individuals who want to understand what MBSE is, the deficiencies in current practice that MBSE overcomes, where and how it has been successfully applied, its benefits and payoffs, and how it is being deployed in different industries and across multiple applications. MBSE engineering practitioners and educators with expertise in different domains have contributed chapters that address various uses of MBSE and related technologies such as simulation and digital twin in the systems lifecycle. The introductory chapter reviews the current state of practice, discusses the genesis of MBSE and makes the business case. Subsequent chapters present the role of ontologies and meta-models in capturing system interdependencies, reasoning about system behavior with design and operational constraints; the use of formal modeling in system (model) verification and validation; ontology-enabled integration of systems and system-of-systems; digital twin-enabled model-based testing; system model design synthesis; model-based tradespace exploration; design for reuse; human-system integration; and role of simulation and Internet-of-Things (IoT) within MBSE.

We rely on them to perform a wide variety of tasks without giving much thought to the origins of the technology or how it became such an important part of our lives. Control System Applications covers the uses of control systems, both in the common and in the uncommon areas of our lives. From the everyday to the unusual, it's all here. From process control to human-in-the-loop control, this book provides illustrations and examples of how these systems are applied. Each chapter contains an introduction to the application, a section defining terms and references, and a section on further readings that help you understand and use the techniques in your work environment. Highly readable and comprehensive, Control System Applications explores the uses of control systems. It illustrates the diversity of control systems and provides examples of how the theory can be applied to specific practical problems. It contains information about aspec ts of control that are not fully captured by the theory, such as techniques for protecting against controller failure and the role of cost and complexity in specifying controller designs.
