Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although mammography is the primary method used for breast cancer screening, screening mammography is limited especially in women with dense breasts, which includes nearly 50% of all women in the United States. Despite improvements such as digital mammography, computed aided detection, and digital breast tomosynthesis, breast cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer-related death in women. The recent proliferation of screening breast ultrasound has led to increased health care costs and false positives, with only a slight improvement in breast cancer detection. It is time for a better test. This is the first textbook dedicated to the subject of abbreviated breast MRI (AB-MR). The editors are principal investigators in the first multicenter trial evaluating AB-MR. Each chapter is authored by a leading expert in the field of breast MRI. AB-MR only takes 10 minutes or less to perform, has a comparable cost to screening breast ultrasound, and detects twice as many cancers compared to combined screening with mammography and ultrasound. The improved performance of AB-MR is irrespective of breast density, family history, overall breast cancer risk, and cancer characteristics (e.g. type, staging, invasive or intraductal, primary or recurrent). As such, it will likely become a routine screening tool in women with dense breasts. Key Features A background on breast MR imaging including a review of current research data Fundamental guidelines for implementing, performing, and interpreting AB-MR Technical approaches with proven efficacy, including biopsy methods Accurate interpretation presented in an easy-to-read flow chart format More than 250 high quality color illustrations AB-MR has the potential to help radiologists overcome breast cancer screening limitations and change current standards of practice. This book provides radiologists with the necessary tools to quickly incorporate AB-MR into clinical practice, with an ultimate goal of improved breast cancer detection rates and patient outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MRI is increasingly being used by radiologists to confirm diagnoses and perform operative procedures of the breast. MRI's contrast between soft tissues in the breast is many times greater than that obtained by plain-film mammography. As opposed to x-rays, which are known to cause damage to cellular DNA, the magnetic fields and radiowaves used with MRI are not known to have any long-term biologic effect. MRI of the breast requires intravenous injection of a contrast agent, which helps highlight breast abnormalities. The American Cancer Society has advised women at high risk for breast cancer to have an MRI. This book, a collaboration between an experienced breast imager and a breast surgeon, contains 100 cases and covers high risk screening, extent of disease evaluation, as well as the full range of benign and malignant tumors found in the breast: DCIS, invasive ductal cancers, and invasive lobule cancers. Rare lesions such as phyllodes, mucinous, liposarcomas, and myotiboblastomas are also covered. Pathologic correlations are included where appropriate. This book has a special emphasis on preoperative planning involving MRI and thus may also appeal to surgical oncologists specializing in breast cancer.

Book excerpt: A practical, systematic guide to performing and evaluating high-quality breast MRI from one of the world's leading authorities High-resolution MR mammography is superior to all other breast imaging modalities for the detection of invasive and intraductal breast cancer forms. It plays an important role in the early detection of breast cancer and in the more eff ective evaluation of breast disease, and has proven to be a reliable method for staging and follow-up after a breast cancer diagnosis. Since there are now dedicated materials available for the performance of percutaneous MRI-guided needle biopsies, it is also possible to obtain a histologic diagnosis of findings that are only detected on MRI. The completely revised and expanded second edition of Practical MR Mammography sets out to cover these thematic and technical developments. Key Features: Goal-oriented didactic structure throughout: When should breast MRI be performed? How does one proceed during the examination? How does one arrive at a diagnosis precisely and reliably? How can mistakes be avoided? Now over 1300 completely new, high-quality images produced with the latest equipment Summarized characteristics of distinct diseases: incidence, etiology, malignant potential, clinical and imaging findings Inclusion and application of MRI-BIRADS In-depth and updated coverage of DCIS This book shows readers how to acquire excellent images and helps improve their image analysis and evaluation skills. It provides clear answers to all questions pertaining to MR mammography and support for special problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in women and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American women. Although cardiovascular-related deaths significantly outnumber breast cancer deaths, breast cancer is arguably the most feared diagnosis among American women. Great strides have been made to heighten public awareness of breast cancer, with particular emphasis on early detection with mammography. Breast radiologists regularly witness the extreme anxiety that just the thought of being diagnosed with breast cancer can cause a patient. This anxious anticipation is often heightened by a lack of knowledge about what to expect from the process of breast imaging evaluation, which is frustrating for both patient and practitioner and can negatively affect the experience. Physicians often encounter patients who have little or no understanding of the reasoning behind the examination or procedure about to be performed-sometimes even up to the day of their breast cancer surgery. Furthermore, most women who undergo breast evaluations will not be diagnosed with cancer. The incidence of breast cancer is only 125.3 per 100,000 women (or 3-6 in every 1,000 screenings), however, symptoms of benign breast abnormalities are quite common and impact many more lives. Accurately diagnosing these non-cancerous conditions can alleviate much anxiety, in addition to helping patients towards a correct treatment plan. The Breast Test Book is a straightforward guide to the process of radiologic breast evaluations. Based on the most current scientific research and best standards of clinical practice, it will help debunk myths, shed light on misinformation, and provide clear facts about what women should expect from these screenings. This improved understanding will ultimately allow patients to play more active roles in their own care and, in the event that a diagnosis is made, give them confidence in their treatment.
