Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Government: A d104-Book for Secondary Schools It is the author's hope that this little book may be found useful in many classes as a manual from which a fairly definite idea of the character and work of our governments may be obtained, with suggestions and material for the further study of particular topics and the practical side of American government as it is to - day. In writing the book he has made use of much the same material as in simi lar chapters of his American Federal State, supplementing those authorities with many that have appeared within the last two years, especially in periodical literature. From that work he has borrowed freely, without the use of quotation marks, for several sections of the text and for references and questions given at the end of the chapters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No legislature in the world has a greater influence over its nation's public affairs than the US Congress. The Congress's centrality in the US system of government has placed research on Congress at the heart of scholarship on American politics. Generations of American government scholars working in a wide range of methodological traditions have focused their analysis on understanding Congress, both as a lawmaking and a representative institution. The purpose of this volume is to take stock of this impressive and diverse literature, identifying areas of accomplishment and promising directions for future work. The editors have commissioned 37 chapters by leading scholars in the field, each chapter critically engages the scholarship focusing on a particular aspect of congressional politics, including the institution's responsiveness to the American public, its procedures and capacities for policymaking, its internal procedures and development, relationships between the branches of government, and the scholarly methodologies for approaching these topics. The Handbook also includes chapters addressing timely questions, including partisan polarization, congressional war powers, and the supermajoritarian procedures of the contemporary Senate. Beyond simply bringing readers up to speed on the current state of research, the volume offers critical assessments of how each literature has progressed - or failed to progress - in recent decades. The chapters identify the major questions posed by each line of research and assess the degree to which the answers developed in the literature are persuasive. The goal is not simply to tell us where we have been as a field, but to set an agenda for research on Congress for the next decade. The Oxford Handbooks of American Politics are a set of reference books offering authoritative and engaging critical overviews of the state of scholarship on American politics. Each volume focuses on a particular aspect of the field. The project is under the General Editorship of George C. Edwards III, and distinguished specialists in their respective fields edit each volume. The Handbooks aim not just to report on the discipline, but also to shape it as scholars critically assess the scholarship on a topic and propose directions in which it needs to move. The series is an indispensable reference for anyone working in American politics. General Editor for The Oxford Handbooks of American Politics: George C. Edwards III

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in American Government and Politics While the materials come from a large variety of sources, I have chosen wherever possible from the writings of men who have had a practical experience in the conduct of government. I have also sought to illustrate the larger and more permanent features of our political system, rather than to furnish a handy guide to the law and practice. To facilitate the work of the student and teacher, I have endeavored to make each extract clear, compact, and self-explanatory, and in several instances I have condensed considerably by omitting obscure allusions and passages not bearing directly on the principles which I have wished to bring out. To avoid marring the pages with unsightly points, I have merely placed an asterisk at the head of each selection which has been subjected to this process of condensa tion. The side notes are intended primarily to help the teacher in conducting class discussions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Civics Handbook: Containing a Brief Outline of American Civil Government and United States History This book is the outgrowth of class-room experience. It is published because of a demand from friends for copies of the notes which are the basis of the text. For several years the author vainly tried to correlate Civil Government and United States History in a single course of one semester by the use of several texts; the vanity of the effort caused the preparation of the notes of which this book is the elaboration. After five years of use, in manuscript, he has found the plan outlined within these pages eminently successful and he presents it to the public with the hope that it may be of use to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of American History, Diplomacy, and Government, for Class Use This book is the result of twenty-five years' experience as a teacher of American History at Harvard University; and embodies methods and materials for several forms of individual student work, as required in courses in American history, diplomacy, and government in that institution. The book is founded on several previous publications of a similar kind, issued by the author under the titles "Outlines," "Suggestions for Students," "Revised Suggestions," and "Hand-Book"; but the material has been carefully worked over for the present volume, especially in view of a change in the narrative course in United States history, by which it includes the forty years since the Civil War. The references for the group readings, lectures, and class-room papers have been revised and enlarged by including the numerous books that have appeared during the last six years; and they have been verified by Mr. J. M. Plaisted, 2d, for several years assistant in the Harvard course in United States history, and by Air. Thomas N. Hoover of the Harvard Graduate School. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Citizen's Manual, Vol. 1: Governments (National, State, and Local), The Electorate, the Civil Service What is the relation of the citizen of the United States to the governments under which he lives? This question, which is quite distinct from questions concerning his relations to his fellow-citi zens, is continually recurring as the population of the country increases, the interests of the people become more complex, and the interference of government with the rights and privileges of the citizen becomes more general. And it is a problem which, from its nature, is hardly capable of a satisfactory solution; for the conditions are in a state of perpetual change. No sooner are present wants and needs provided for, than new questions arise, demanding attention. This matter of the relation of the governed to the government, is, then, pre-eminently and continually a question of the day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major dilemmas facing the administrative state in the United States today is discerning how best to harness for public purposes the dynamism of markets, the passion and commitment of nonprofit and volunteer organizations, and the public-interest-oriented expertise of the career civil service. Researchers across a variety of disciplines, fields, and subfields have independently investigated aspects of the formidable challenges, choices, and opportunities this dilemma poses for governance, democratic constitutionalism, and theory building. This literature is vast, affords multiple and conflicting perspectives, is methodologically diverse, and is fragmented. The Oxford Handbook of American Bureaucracy affords readers an uncommon overview and integration of this eclectic body of knowledge as adduced by many of its most respected researchers. Each of the chapters identifies major issues and trends, critically takes stock of the state of knowledge, and ponders where future research is most promising. Unprecedented in scope, methodological diversity, scholarly viewpoint, and substantive integration, this volume is invaluable for assessing where the study of American bureaucracy stands at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, and where leading scholars think it should go in the future. The Oxford Handbooks of American Politics are a set of reference books offering authoritative and engaging critical overviews of the state of scholarship on American politics. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of American Political Parties and Interest Groups is a major new volume that will help scholars assess the current state of scholarship on parties and interest groups and the directions in which it needs to move. Never before has the academic literature on political parties received such an extended treatment. Twenty nine chapters critically assess both the major contributions to the literature and the ways in which it has developed. With contributions from most of the leading scholars in the field, the volume provides a definitive point of reference for all those working in and around the area. Equally important, the authors also identify areas of new and interesting research. These chapters offer a distinctive point of view, an argument about the successes and failures of past scholarship, and a set of recommendations about how future work ought to develop. This volume will help set the agenda for research on political parties and interest groups for the next decade.
