Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Surveyors The need of the volume arose merely from the fact that no text-book on elementary surveying in pocket-book form can now be found in the market. While in the field a student should have a book of tables ever at hand, and if these are combined with the text a double advantage is often found, particularly in adjusting instruments and in ruling forms for notes. Wide and has the numbers for the different foot-marks stamped on solder which adheres to the tape. This form of tape has the advantage of not having a shoulder or projection to catch against the reel when the tape is being wound up or run out, or to catch on stones or other rough objects while in use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surveying Manual: A Manual of Field and Office Methods for the Use of Students in Surveying The several series of practice problems at the conclusion of the respective chapters are arranged so as to give the student familiarity with the use of the instrument before taking up its theory and adjustments, this order being more effective than the reverse. The interest of the stu dent may be stimulated and his gain in skill promoted by giving him practice with level and transit very early in the course, after which the scope of the work may be much more flexible both for student and instructor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook on Tacheometrical Surveying The present book is the result of the author's twelve years' personal experience of Tacheometrical Surveying. He hopes it will be of use to those about to take up this branch of the subject. Tacheometrical Surveying is generally employed for the preliminary plans required in the erection of projected public works. These plans can be considered correct, as long as all measurements are taken by scale. A trial to employ the tacheometrical method for the survey of estates and of wide portions of country has been made by the author, and the result being very satisfactory, he ventures to publish the method he employed in Chapter V. The Tacheometrical Surveying Tables given at the end of this pamphlet will be found of practical use for the reduction of the tacheometrical book. The student will find all he may require in Hurst's Architectural Surveyor's Handbook.' The feeling which has been entertained by some architects, that the supplying of quantities for works adds to their cost, is, it is believed, giving place to the impression that, what ever may be the result in that respect, their supply is just and correct in principle. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...after the preceding adjustments have been made, level the instrument and revolve it 180 degrees on the vertical axis. If the bubble runs toward one end, the Y on that end is too high, and the screws at the end of the horizontal bar are moved so as to correct one half of the apparent error. Then repeat the operation until the bubble remains in the middle of the scale for all positions of the telescope. In adjusting an instrument great care must be taken not to turn the screws too tight, as by so doing the threads soon bscome injured. No student or beginner should be allowed to adjust a level or transit until he has become well acquainted with all its parts by actual use. The parallax adjustment, however, is an exception, since this varies for different eyes, and each student should see that this is made every time he uses the instrument. The dumpy level cannot be adjusted by the above methods since the horizontal bar and telescope are rigidly connected. Both the bubble and the horizontal cross-hair are, however, movable. It is necessary, () that the bubble should be perpendicular to the vertical axis and (6) that the line of sight should be parallel to the bubble. The adjustment (a) is made exactly like that above described for the horizontal bar of the Y level. The adjustment (6) is made by the peg method of Art. 26, except that the horizontal cross-hair is moved instead of the bubble. Prob. 22. Give the reasons for each of the adjustments oj the Y level. Art. 23. Comparison Of Levels. In buying an instrument it is desirable that the surveyoi should be able to make such an examination as will indicate whether it is a good one of its class or whether it is the kind that he needs. The following tests, which are useful in addi. tion to...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual for Practical Surveyors: Containing Methods Indispensably Necessary for Actual Field Operations The want of a work on Practical Survey ing has been long felt, and is generally ad knowledged. The numerous publications on surveying would seem to preclude the neces sity of anything new. But upon examina tion we find the wants of the student have been consulted, rather than those of the prac tical man. Indeed, many of the publications in general use appear to have been written by those who were engaged in the instruction of youth, and who were unacquainted with the practical part of surveying, excepting perhaps so far as may have been requisite for the information of the classes under their direction.
