Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The development of the social welfare program in Kansas indicated the need for current information about agencies and organizations interested in helping people. In response to this request the State Department of Social Welfare prepared a compilation of these social resources in 1939 under the title of a Handbook of Social Resources. Then 10 years later the material in the Handbook was revised and more agencies included. Information about many of these resources was brought up to date in 1951. The present revision represents the most recent information about social resources available to persons residing in Kansas. Although the Handbook was compiled primarily for persons engaged in organized social welfare activities, it has been of value to professional, religious, commercial, labor, social, and civic organizations interested in the health, welfare, and other social resources of Kansas"--Preface.

These include long-established foundations disciplines such as sociology of education and philosophy of education as well as newer theoretical perspectives such as critical race theory, feminist educational theory, and cultural studies in education. Parts three, four, and five demonstrate how these theoretical lenses are used to examine such phenomena as globalization, media, popular culture, technology, youth culture, and schooling. This groundbreaking volume helps readers understand the history, evolution, and significance of this wide-ranging, often misunderstood, and increasingly important field of study. This book is appropriate as a reference volume not only for scholars in the social foundations of education but also for scholars interested in the cultural contexts of teaching and learning (formal and informal). It is also appropriate as a textbook for graduate-level courses in Social Foundations of Education, School and Society, Educational Policy Studies, Cultural Studies in Education, and Curriculum and Instruction.

Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Water Economics and Institutions by : Kimberly Burnett
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Water Economics and Institutions written by Kimberly Burnett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing scarcity of freshwater worldwide brings to light the need for sound water resource modeling and policy analysis. While a solid foundation has been established for many specific water management problems, combining those methods and principles in a unified framework remains an ongoing challenge. This Handbook aims to expand the scope of efficient water use to include allocation of sources and quantities across uses and time, as well as integrating demand-management with supply-side substitutes. Socially efficient water use does not generally coincide with private decisions in the real world, however. Examples of mechanisms designed to incentivize efficient behavior are drawn from agricultural water use, municipal water regulation, and externalities linked to water resources. Water management is further complicated when information is costly and/or imperfect. Standard optimization frameworks are extended to allow for coordination costs, games and cooperation, and risk allocation. When operating efficiently, water markets are often viewed as a desirable means of allocation because a market price incentivizes users to move resources from low to high value activities. However, early attempts at water trading have run into many obstacles. Case studies from the United States, Australia, Europe, and Canada highlight the successes and remaining challenges of establishing efficient water markets.

Book Synopsis The Handbook of Child and Elder Care Resources by :
Download or read book The Handbook of Child and Elder Care Resources written by and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1997 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 700,000 Federal employees have children under age 13; at least an equal number of Federal employees are estimated to have concerns about their elderly parents and relatives. This handbook was developed primarily to put government employees in touch with the many free resource organizations and agencies around the country that can help them meet their dependent care needs. It also provides practical tips on how to find quality child care, information about federal personnel programs that can help to balance work and family responsibilities, and places to call for further information on related topics, such as obtaining financial assistance. The handbook is divided into three parts: Child Care, Elder Care, and Work and Family Programs. Part I suggests practical steps to take in finding quality child care, including questions to ask during the initial telephone screening and a checklist of things to observe when visiting child care centers or homes. It also provides a directory of resource and referral services around the country, and a list of federal and national organizations that can help parents learn about quality child care. Part II explains a variety of community resources that are offered around the country to help older adults function independently, and discusses housing options, financial and medical considerations, nursing homes, and home health care agencies. It also provides a short summary of the services provided by federal and national organizations which can help employees meet their elder care needs. The last part provides information on the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM's) Work and Family Program Center and government-wide personnel flexibility; and on programs, policies, and leave options to help employees balance their work and family demands.
