The many characters in the adventure story are colorful and exciting. As the story unfolds, you will find yourself becoming involved with the personalities in the story and perhaps begin to compare them with real-life characters you have known. The wide variety of locations visited in the book are well described and picturesque. Your imagination can race ahead as you read, however, you must keep reading to see how the story ends. I keep thinking that this story could be a movie. I can't wait to read the last volume! Betty (Whealton) Garren, Ph.D.University of South CarolinaProfessor of Education

Book excerpt: You know women like these. They are strong women, who have what it takes to deal with life altering circumstances. Sometimes they have choices about what to do but other times, they have no other option. In Twilight for the Gods, Christina de La Rocha has risen from the impoverished slums of her small South American country to a position as personal confidant to the president. She has been working to change the political process in ways that benefit the poor and downtrodden in her country. Her crisis comes just when success seems to be within her grasp. She proves that ultimate courage is not the exclusive domain of men. In Colonial Justice fifteen-year-old Abigail Wagstaff must defy her violent Calvinist father to save the life of the man she loves. In Nowhere to Run, Lynn Pierce faces the kidnapping of one of her sons. How she turns the tables on the kidnappers is the stuff of legend. In A High Plains Christmas, Sarah Fitzgerald Montgomery is a refugee from a defeated Confederacy. The daughter of a wealthy planter, she grew up in aristocratic circumstances. But her way of life turns to dust after the defeat of the South. In 1866 she and her war-wounded husband moved west to Kansas to start over in a new place away from the ravages of war. When her husband dies from his wounds four months after their first child is born, Sarah is alone in snow-covered Kansas with a tiny baby to care for. But she is not a woman who will give up her dream.

Book Synopsis A Comparative Grammar of British English Dialects by : Bernd Kortmann
Download or read book A Comparative Grammar of British English Dialects written by Bernd Kortmann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2005 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers qualitative as well as corpus-based quantitative studies on three domains of grammatical variation in the British Isles. All studies draw heavily on the Freiburg English Dialect Corpus (FRED), a computerized corpus for predominantly British English dialects comprising some 2.5 million words. Besides an account of FRED and the advantages which a functional-typological framework offers for the study of dialect grammar, the volume includes the following three substantial studies. Tanja Herrmann's study is the first systematic cross-regional study of relativization strategies for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and four major dialect areas in England. In her research design Hermann has included a number of issues crucial in typological research on relative clauses, above all the Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy. Lukas Pietsch investigates the so-called Northern Subject Rule, a special agreement phenomenon known from Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. His study is primarily based on the Northern Ireland Transcribed Corpus of Speech, but also on the FRED and SED data (Survey of English Dialects) for the North of England. Susanne Wagner is concerned with the phenomenon of pronominal gender, focussing especially on the typologically rather unique semantic gender system in the dialects of Southwest England. This volume will be of interest to dialectologists, sociolinguists, typologists, historical linguists, grammarians, and anyone interested in the structure of spontaneous spoken English.
