Book excerpt: "The Eternal City, by Hall Caine, was published in 1901. The story opens in London, where Prince Volonna, who has been exiled for conspiracy against the Italian government, lives a life of charity under an assumed name, being known as Dr. Roselli. He rescues from the snow, a street waif, David Leone, who is one of the many who are brought to England yearly from the south to play and beg in the streets. This lad grows up in the household of the good doctor and his English wife and little daughter Roma, imbibing his foster father?s theories and becoming his disciple. Prince Volonna is finally tricked back to Italy, where he is captured and transported to Elba, and David Leone is likewise condemned as a conspirator; the latter escapes, and as David Rossi enters Rome and preaches his principle of the brotherhood of man. After the death of her father, Roma is discovered by the Baron Bonelli, Secretary of State, and a man of cunning and duplicity, who brings her to Rome where she becomes the reigning belle of the capital, but one whose name has not remained untarnished. The author recounts her meeting with David Rossi, her recognition of her foster brother, their love and the various obstacles which beset their path." -- Bartleby.com.

Book excerpt: This first full biography of the Victorian romantic novelist Hall Caine traces his life from childhood in Liverpool, through his time as 'housemate' to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and association with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood to his triumphant career as a popular novelist. Caine, a swashbuckling character who might have figured in one of his own novels, wrote fifteen novels and many non-fiction works. Vivien Allen has been able to take advantage of Caine's family papers and letters and, living in the Isle of Man, is well placed to write about this half-forgotten author of Manx descent who made his home there from 1896 until his death in 1931. The book contains letters to Hall Caine from the American, Dr Francis Tumblety who has been recently identified as the probable 'Jack the Ripper'. These letters were mentioned in the Channel 4 (UK) documentary 'Jack the Ripper' 1996. Much of the archive material was accessed with the assistance of the New York Public Library and the New York Theatre Museum.

Book excerpt: "The fictional story is set on the Isle of Man and is concerned with Victor Stowell, the Deemster's son, who commits a romantic indiscretion and then gives up on all of his principles in order to keep it a secret. However, in the face of the mounting consequences, Victor confesses publicly to his crime and is punished, but redemption comes through a woman's love. The penultimate of Caine's novels, it is romantic and moralistic, returning to his regular themes of sin, justice and atonement, whilst also addressing 'the woman question.'"--Goodreads.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'My revenge is just begun! I spread it over centuries, and time is on my side,' warns Dracula. This statement is descriptive of the Gothic genre. Like the Count, the Gothic encompasses and has manifested itself in many forms. Bram Stoker and the Gothic demonstrates how Dracula marks a key moment in the transformation of the Gothic. Harking back to early Gothic's preoccupation with the supernatural, decayed aristocracy and incarceration in gloomy castles, the novel speaks to its own time, but has also transformed the genre, a revitalization that continues to sustain the Gothic today. This collection explores the formations of the Gothic, the relationship between Stoker's work and some of his Gothic predecessors, such as Poe and Wollstonecraft, presents new readings of Stoker's fiction and probes the influences of his cultural circle, before concluding by examining aspects of Gothic transformation from Daphne du Maurier to Stoker's own 'reincarnation' in fiction and biography. Bram Stoker and the Gothic testifies to Stoker's centrality to the Gothic genre. Like Dracula, Stoker's 'revenge' shows no sign of abating.
