Notorious throughout Scotland as the most prolific serial killer since the Black Death, he has escaped Glasgow and the long arm of the law by hiding out in a monastery in the frozen far north-west. However, as the snow descends, and the police slowly close in on his hideout, a new, vicious and altogether more psychotic murderer is wreaking havoc amongst the monks... Praise for THE BARBER SURGEON'S HAIRSHIRT: "A mad, macabre romp with surreal characters and cutting black humour." The Sunday Mirror "Gloriously over the top, very bloody and very, very funny." Daily Telegraph "A novel which is both genuinely silly and a fun read." The Scotsman "A flawless follow-up to an impressive debut, this is extremely well-written, highly amusing and completely unpredictable in its outrageous plot twists and turns." The List "Lindsay's burlesque thrills offer no sex, no drugs, no desperation to be cool. Just straightforward adult story; fantastic plot, classic timing and gleeful delight in the grotesque. With more talent than Irvine Welsh could dream of, Lindsay has crafted a macabre masterpiece where content lives up to style." What's On

Book excerpt: Amy Goldin's critical writing inspired many artists of the 1960s and '70s. Her unconventional acceptance of the new art forms emerging during the time and her challenge to the traditional teaching of art history in the classroom paved the way for broader parameters within the definition of art. Thirty of Goldin's extensive writings have been selected and coupled with insightful first-person accounts from fellow art critics and art historians in this presentation. Goldin's thought-provoking articles on Islamic art, conceptual art, folk art, Abstract Expressionism, and African American art are featured along with in-depth analysis of such artists as Henri Matisse, George Sugarman, Manny Farber and Morris Louis. SELLING POINTS: *This collection of essays includes contributions by Irving Sandler, Betsy Baker, Holland Cotter, Joan Simon, Oleg Grabar, Max Kozloff and others *Selected essays by noted art critic Amy Goldin, taken from prominent art publications and her personal journals, have been gathered by artist Robert Kushner ILLUSTRATIONS: 15 colour

Book excerpt: The book considers Thomas More’s early life-choices. An early letter is cited by biographers but most miss More’s reference to the market place. More’s great-grandson, Cresacre, a Londoner, understood it correctly, and that gives reason to trust him on other aspects of More’s youth. This study is based on early testimonies, those of Erasmus, Roper, Harpsfield, Stapleton and Cresacre More, as well as More’s early writings, the Pageant Verses, and his additions / omissions to the Life of Pico; evidence drawn from authors he recommended, like Hilton and Gerson; and finally, his epitaph. Attention is given to his lectures on St Augustine’s City of God, and to St John Chrysostom. It is argued More studied Chrysostom’s Homilies on the Gospel of St Matthew,/i> from a Greek manuscript. Chrysostom, in the introductory homily, spoke of the city and the market place, as the setting in which Christians practice the teaching of Christ. More practiced law and taught it. He was attracted to becoming a Christian humanist alongside Grocyn, Colet, Linacre, and Lily. With them he studied Greek, the classics and Fathers of the Church. Helped by them he became a man of prayer, aware of the need to seek holiness in the midst of the world as a layman. Faced with the dilemma of the humanist in choosing between the contemplative life of the philosopher and an active life of engagement with the world, he deliberately chose the active life in service to society, and the contemplative life of the Christian as a married man. This awareness and choice is what is called vocation, implying determination to persevere throughout life: More saw his life as a pilgrimage towards heaven as described in the last chapter focusing on More’s last work, De tristitia, tedio, pavore, et oratione christi ante captionem eius.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the intrusive fear that we may not be what we appear to be, or worse, that we may be only what we appear to be and nothing more. It is concerned with the worry of being exposed as frauds in our profession, cads in our love lives, as less than virtuously motivated actors when we are being agreeable, charitable, or decent. Why do we so often mistrust the motives of our own deeds, thinking them fake, though the beneficiary of them gives us full credit? Much of this book deals with that self-tormenting self-consciousness. It is about roles and identity, discussing our engagement in the roles we play, our doubts about our identities amidst this flux of roles, and thus about anxieties of authenticity.

Book excerpt: Following Jesus is more complex and challenging than anybody expects when they start out on the journey. It's not just attending church, reading your Bible, and minding your Ps and Qs; it is an adventure filled with wonder and difficulty, with unlearning and relearning. In Deep Like Me, pastor Rick Bundschuh shares what he had discovered about shuffling after Jesus, and invites readers to wrestle, grieve, reevaluate, redirect, focus, contemplate, be still, and get real about living the life of a disciple. Rick's story-driven musings are explorative instead of instructive, contemplative rather than confrontational, yet he warmly invites the reader to stride, stumble, shuffle, or crawl in the footsteps of Jesus.

This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteenth-century England was a special place and time to be a bishop. Like their predecessors, these bishops were key members of the regnal community: anointers of kings, tenants-in-chief, pastors, counsellors, scholars, diplomats, the brothers and friends of kings and barons, and the protectors of the weak. But now circumstance and personality converged to produce an uncommonly dedicated episcopate-dedicated not only to its pastoral mission but also to the defence of the kingdom and the oversight of royal government. This cohort was bound by corporate solidarity and a vigorous culture, and possessed an authority to reform the king, and so influence political events, unknown by the episcopates of other kingdoms. These bishops were, then, to place themselves at the heart of the dramatic events of this era. Under King John and Henry III-throughout rebellion, civil war, and invasion from France, and the turbulent years of Minority government and Henry's early personal rule-the bishops acted as peacemakers: they supported royal power when it was threatened, for the sake of regnal peace, but also used their unique authority to reform the king when his illegal actions threatened to provoke his barons to rebellion. This changed, however, between 1258 and 1265, when around half of England's bishops set aside their loyalty to the king and joined a group of magnates, led by Simon de Montfort, in England's first revolution, appropriating royal powers in order to establish conciliar rule. Bishops in the Political Community of England, 1213-1272 examines the interaction between the bishops' actions on the ground and their culture, identity, and political thought. In so doing it reveals how the Montfortian bishops were forced to construct a new philosophy of power in the crucible of political crisis, and thus presents a new ideal-type in the study of politics and political thought: spontaneous ideology.
