Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Adam Smith by : Knud Haakonssen
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Adam Smith written by Knud Haakonssen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Smith is best known as the founder of scientific economics and as an early proponent of the modern market economy. Political economy, however, was only one part of Smith's comprehensive intellectual system. Consisting of a theory of mind and its functions in language, arts, science, and social intercourse, Smith's system was a towering contribution to the Scottish Enlightenment. His ideas on social intercourse also served as the basis for a moral theory that provided both historical and theoretical accounts of law, politics, and economics. This Companion volume provides an examination of all aspects of Smith's thought. Collectively, the essays take into account Smith's multiple contexts - Scottish, British, European, Atlantic; biographical, institutional, political, philosophical - and they draw on all of his works, including student notes from his lectures. Pluralistic in approach, the volume provides a contextualist history of Smith, as well as direct philosophical engagement with his ideas.

Book Synopsis Improving Urban Schools: Leadership And Collaboration by : Ainscow, Mel
Download or read book Improving Urban Schools: Leadership And Collaboration written by Ainscow, Mel and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on research evidence, Improving Urban Schools addresses the question of how primary and secondary urban schools can be improved in a more inclusive way. The authors argue that urban schools and their communities have within them expertise that tends to be overlooked, and latent creativity that should be mobilised to move thinking and progress forward. They show that new approaches to leadership, various forms of collaborative school-to-school partnerships, and major changes in national policy development are needed to make use of this untapped energy.
Book Synopsis Progress in Colour Studies: Language and culture by : Carole Patricia Biggam
Download or read book Progress in Colour Studies: Language and culture written by Carole Patricia Biggam and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with its companion volume, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the current avenues of research into colour, a phenomenon which daily affects all our lives in often surprising ways. The majority of the papers originated in a 2004 conference entitled 'Progress in Colour Studies' which was held in the University of Glasgow, U.K. The contributions to this first volume, which is principally linguistic and anthropological in content, and to its companion on the psychological aspects of colour, present either summaries of state-of-the-art colour research in various disciplines, or in-depth accounts of certain aspects of such work. This volume includes approaches such as Natural Semantic Metalanguage, social network analysis, quantitative analysis, type modification, vantage theory, the centrality of social norms of inference, place-names and heraldry. In the process, new insights are offered into the following languages: English, French, Portuguese, Sorbian, Burarra, Cape Breton Gaelic, Tzotzil, and others.

Book Synopsis Gender in Scottish History Since 1700 by : Lynn Abrams
Download or read book Gender in Scottish History Since 1700 written by Lynn Abrams and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish history is undergoing a renaissance. Everyone agrees that an understanding of our nation’s history is integral to our experience of its present and the shaping of the future. But the story of Scotland’s past is being told with little reference to gendered identities. Not only are women largely missing from these grand narratives, but men’s experience has tended to be sublimated in intellectual, political and economic agendas. Neither femininities nor masculinities have been given much of a place in Scotland’s past or in the process of nation-making. Gender in Scottish Historyoffers a new perspective on Scotland’s past since around 1700, viewing some of the main themes with a gendered perspective. It starts from the assumption that gender is integral to our understanding of the ways in which societies in the past were organised and that national histories have a tendency to be gender blind. Each chapter engages with one key theme from Scottish historiography, asking what happens when women are added to the story and how the story changes when the meanings of gendered understandings and assumptions are probed. Addressing politics, culture, religion, science, education, work, the family and identity, Gender in Scottish Historyproposes an alternative reading of the Scottish past which is both inclusive and recognisable.
