Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall The fairest castle-chateau in all England's great do main, the walls and halls of which were builded in the depths of time, takes on again its olden form quick with quivering life, and from the gates of Eagle Tower issues my quaint and radiant company. Some are clad in gold lace, Silks, and taffetas; some wear leather, buckram and clanking steel. While the caldron boils, their cloud-forms grow ever more distinct and definite, till at length I can trace their every feature. I see the color of their eyes. I discern the shades Of their hair. Some heads are streaked with gray; others are glossy with the Sheen of youth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evenings at Haddon Hall: A Series of Romantic Tales of the Olden Time It is within the precincts of this princely abode of the Vernons and the Mannciws that those simple revels are to take place in which we would fain interest the imagina tions of our readers, with a view to their due appreciation of those exquisite specimens of high art which it is our pl'asnnt office to be the medium of introducing to the world, and which owe their inspiration to the stately times to which those stately relics belong - times when, depre catc them as we may, by our meaningless epithets of rude, barbarous, uncivilized, and the like, gave rise to nohlcr achievements of human intellect, brighter phases of human character, more beautiful examples of human virtue, and more signal evidences of the heights to which our common nature is capable of attaining, than are even dreamt of in the philosophy, much less realised in the practice, of our own ultra-civilized day - times, too, to which the highest art and the purest literature of our own day are frequently compelled to resort, in search of those types of excellence, those traits of heroism, and those svmhols of intellectual and moral beauty, for which the cnamoured seekers look in vain in that more cultivated cm to which they appeal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Haddon Hall: Being Notes on Its Architecture and History, for the Use of Visitors Haddon Hall has been so often and so ably described, that I feel some explanation is necessary for the existence of this little book. It has not been my intention in any way to write a guide book to Haddon Hall. That work has been done many times over, and there is no idea in my mind of doing over again what others have done so well before. But there has always appeared to me to be a distinct want for a book which shall not only describe the building as it stands today, or give long accounts of the noble families who have lived there, but shall try and render intelligible to the ordinary tourist the significance of the building as a building, tracing its history in its stones. The existing guide-books give the approximate dates of difierent parts of this mansion, but these are scattered about at random, and in such a way as to bewilder and puzzle the tourist who has no very great knowledge of architecture. The remarks, too, of the cicerone, as one is conducted through the building, are apt to bewilder rather than enlighten the understanding of an enquiring tourist visiting the Hall for the first time. Why, for instance, should there exist a Dining Room, when we have just been shown where the lords of Haddon used to sit and eat at the dais in the Great Hall? That is a question that used to puzzle me, and must puzzle many to-day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heiress of Haddon The story of Dorothy Vernon's romantic wooing and marriage is known in some legendary form or other all the kingdom over, but more especially in the Midlands, and in Derbyshire, where this interesting drama was enacted some 300 years ago. Few people, however, know more than the merest outline of the event, which is here detailed in a highly interesting form, and offered as a complete and historical romance. Probably nothing more fascinating exists in the annals of English History than the story, telling how the estates of Haddon became the property of the ducal house of Rutland. This is here fully related, together with an account of the trials which Dorothy and her lover had to undergo, in a courtship which was forbidden on the one hand by the lady's father, Sir George Vernon - the King of the Peak - and opposed by the machinations of a jealous lover on the other. Much of the interest of the tale is centred in the neighbour hood of Haddon and the surrounding district, and scenes of importance are also enacted at Derby, Matlock, Rowsley, Dale Abbey, ashby-de-la-zouch, London, and Nottingham. In the course of the story many Old English Customs of that period are described. The story is already favourably known, having appeared in serial form in the High Peak News. Gardens and gardening, too, are to be treated of, and will again receive the attention of one who has never yet failed to enrich English literature when he has taken up his pen to write on the well-loved theme.
