Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H.G. Wells is justly famous as a writer of short stories, but for too long the originality of his contribution in this field has been unacknowledged. The present study argues that in his short stories Wells was not simply emulating the styles and themes of his predecessors but making a distinctive contribution to the genre grounded firmly in his approach to fiction. The study demonstrates that Wells's short stories merit far closer critical attention than they have yet received and possess considerable psychological and symbolic insight.

Book Synopsis Learning from Other Worlds by : Patrick Parrinder
Download or read book Learning from Other Worlds written by Patrick Parrinder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of new essays on science fiction and utopian literature honouring the work of Darko Suvin, the scholar and literary theorist who co-founded the journal Science-Fiction Studies in 1973. The title of this volume attempts to convey the essence of ‘cognitive estrangement’ in relation to SF and utopia: that by imagining strange worlds we learn to see our own world in a new perspective. The contributors have all been influenced by Darko Suvin’s belief that the double movement of estrangement and cognition reflects deep structures of human storytelling. Learning from otherness is as natural and inevitable a process as the instinct for imitation and representation that Aristotle described in his Poetics. Though written from varying perspectives, the essays in Learning from Other Worlds pay tribute to the intellectual and personal inspiration of Darko Suvin to whom the essays are dedicated.

This book was released on 2021-02-13 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The H. G. Wells Collection includes five novels; The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, and The First Men in the Moon. H. G. Wells is credited with the popularisation of time travel in 1895 with The Time Machine, introducing the idea of time being the "fourth dimension" a decade before the publication of Einstein's first Relativity papers. In 1896, he imagined a mad scientist creating human-like beings from animals in The Island of Doctor Moreau, which created a growing interest in animal welfare throughout Europe. In 1897 with The Invisible Man, Wells shows how a formula could render one invisible, recognizing that an invisible eye would not be able to focus, thus rendering the invisible man blind. With The War of the Worlds in 1898, Wells established the idea that an advanced civilization could live on Mars, popularising the term 'martian' and the idea that aliens could invade Earth. With The First Men in the Moon, Wells developed antigravity, a development that we are still dreaming about to this day.

Book Synopsis The Plattner Story and Others by : H. G. Wells
Download or read book The Plattner Story and Others written by H. G. Wells and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second Spoken Ink collection of superb short stories by H. G. Wells, who was a master of the form. Humour and wit abound in his writing, as does sharp social observation. Among the 17 stories in this collection, The Plattner Story tells of a chemistry teacher who analyses a most unusual powder one of the boys brings to class, in The Cone a woman married to a bullying industrialist is having an affair with his young friend. Her jealous husband gives the lover a tour of the steel furnaces he is so proud of. The Sad Story of the Dramatic Critic is in fact fall-off-your chair hilarious, especially as read by Mike Grady, as well-known and cherished as Thora Hird's son-in-law Barry Wilkinson in Last of the Summer Wine. Truly poignant stories of love are The Jilting of Jane and A Slip under the Microscope.
