Book excerpt: This book offers a highly informative guide to interventional radiology such as arterial embolization and arterial balloon occlusion for the prevention of massive hemorrhage and management of cervical myomectomy and cesarean hysterectomy. Recently, catheter intervention for hemostasis in obstetric patients has been increasingly used. Before myomectomy of large cervical leiomyoma or cesarean hysterectomy for placenta percreta with expected massive hemorrhage, a balloon occlusion catheter is inserted into arteries. In cesarean hysterectomy operations, ligation of internal iliac artery is not always effective in hemostasis of uterine bleeding: the success rate is about 40 -60%. Uterine blood flow during pregnancy is much different from that in non-pregnant women because large numbers of complicated collateral arteries develop during pregnancy, especially in patients with placenta previa. If the internal iliac artery and hypogastric artery are ligated, peripheral blood flow is still maintained, which causes intraoperative problems. The authors argue that effective transcatheter balloon occlusion requires a detailed knowledge of blood flow in both pregnant and non-pregnant women. As such the book provides extensive, detailed anatomical figures and videos offer readers vivid insights into methods of intercepting the uterine blood supply and the surgical methods. The book offers a new and indispensable reference guide for all obstetricians, not only for residents, but also for experienced professionals. It is also a valuable resource for radiologists and radiological technicians and radiology specialists.

Written by highly qualified and clinically active physicians from around the world, it shares information gathered over the past decade, providing a comprehensive database of clinical knowledge for a wide range of practicing clinicians and researchers. Moreover, it describes basic methods for vascular access, methods for REBOA (Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta), endo-grafts and embolization methods, as well as other, more advanced methods for endovascular and hybrid resuscitation (CPR REBOA, ECHMO etc.) from the pre-hospital to the post-surgical phase. As the body of literature in this field has grown considerably over the past five years, the book also focuses on summarizing what is known, what the clinical and research evidence is, and “how to actually use” the various methods. It will help readers understand basic and advanced modern techniques for bleeding control and modern resuscitation, and how to apply them in clinical practice.

Book excerpt: This book offers a highly informative guide to surgical remedies for massive hemorrhage and the management of consumptive coagulopathy during cesarean section. Featuring extensive illustrations and videos coupled with detailed anatomical figures to offer readers vivid insights, it discusses the history of uterine hemostatic methods and explains their evolution and the benefits of using compression sutures. Further, it addresses the treatment of consumptive coagulopathy with massive hemorrhage, which can be complicated during cesarean section. It is broadly known that ligation of the internal iliac artery is not always effective in hemostasis of uterine bleeding: the success rate of hemostasis is only 40-60%, because uterine blood flow during pregnancy differs considerably from the normal flow. Moreover, the number of complex collateral arteries formed during pregnancy make the situation more complicated, especially in the case of placenta previa. This book introduces new clinical practice guidelines for critical obstetrical hemorrhage, helping obstetricians successfully manage consumptive coagulopathy. It offers a new and indispensable reference guide for all obstetricians, not only for residents, but also for experienced practitioners.

Covering all aspects of gynecology commonly encountered in day-to-day practice, this exhaustive and fully updated new edition provides a practical, one-stop reference work for clinicians working in the field. This carefully-designed volume includes ten sections, beginning with comprehensive coverage of office-based gynecology, and continuing on to present disease processes and management information by patient age group. Each chapter includes background information, current recommendations for screening, diagnostic criteria, common and uncommon associated problems, approach to diagnosis, summary of treatment options, and an overview of ICD-10 codes for specific diagnoses. Importantly, many areas that are covered in the handbook as subspecialty problems are pertinent and important information to many of the general practitioners who handle and develop some expertise in these areas. These include ovulation induction, medical management of incontinence, management of abnormal Pap smears, and work-up of abnormal bleeding. The handbook concludes with an easy-to-navigate presentation of minimally-invasive operations, surgical procedures, neoplasms, and pathology. Advantages and risks associated with management of particular diseases are covered, along with multiple tips for avoiding complications. This second edition is fully updated. With extensive updates on cervical cancer screening, pelvic organ prolapse, and more, many chapters will be completely rewritten to reflect the latest guidelines, procedures, and methods of care in women’s health. The text additionally includes two new chapters, covering the impact of COVID on gynecology care, and the work-up and surgical management of chronic pelvic pain. This is an ideal guide for practicing gynecologists, family and internal medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, fellows, residents, medical students, and all women’s health care providers.

Book excerpt: Young scientists will get both inspiration and giggles from this humorous but true tale of early experiments with flying. The book tells how the first successful venture into human flight came about because of two French brothers, several paper bags, heated air, leaky cloth, hydrogen gas, frightened farmers, a duck, a rooster, a sheep, and a brave friend of the French king. In addition to introducing scientific processes and principles of flight, Up, Up in a Balloon may prompt budding inventors to try, try again—just as the Montgolfier brothers did when they launched the first hot air balloons more than 200 years ago. Up, Up in a Balloon is part of the I Wonder Why book series, written to ignite the curiosity of children in grades K–6 while encouraging them to become avid readers. These books explore the marvels of geology, land forms, weather, environments, and other phenomena related to science and nature. Included in each volume is a Parent/Teacher Handbook with coordinating activities. The I Wonder Why series is written by an award-winning science educator and published by NSTA Kids, a division of NSTA Press.
