Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface. In 1901 our Morphology of Spermatophytes, Part I, was published, which comprised a presentation of the gymnosperms. It had grown out of a special course given to graduate students for several successive years, and although most of the ground had been traversed in this way several times, the larger part of the material in the book was taken from the contributions of other investigators. There was some new material included, but the chief contributions of the book were certain illustrations and the organized presentation of the group as a whole for research students. During the last decade the special course referred to has been continued for successive generations of graduate students, with a constantly widening range of material and from new points of view. In addition to this extensive and repeated critical examination of material, a number of special investigations have been carried on in the laboratory. These investigations have been planned so that there might be not only a research contact with all regions of the gymnosperm series, but also a clearing up of unknown or doubtful forms. These special contributions from the laboratory have aggregated twenty-six since 1901, and have dealt with fourteen genera, distributed as follows: in Cycadales, Dioon, Microcycas, Encephalartos, Ceratozamia, and Zamia; in Ginkgoales, Ginkgo; in Coniferales, Pinus, Thuja, Torreya, Phyllocladus, Podocarpus, and Dacrydium; in Gnetales, Ephedra and Gnetum. This has enabled us to present the living groups from an entirely different standpoint, and to use many illustrations prepared in this laboratory. The present account, therefore, is based upon our own work, supplemented by the work of other investigators, rather than a compilation from literature, supplemented by occasional personal observations. Furthermore, the last decade has been one of unprecedented activity in the investigation of gymnosperms, as a comparison of the bibliography of the volume of 1901 with that of the present one will indicate. In this period the number of titles has increased from 112 to 420, some of the additions being accounted for by the larger inclusion of paleobotanical material. Aside from a far more complete knowledge of the living groups, including as it does now at least the salient facts in reference to almost every genus, there have been two notable advances. In the first place, during this period vascular anatomy has developed as a subject of first importance, and some of its most conspicuous contributions have been in connection with the origin and relationships of gymnosperms. In the second place, paleobotany has brought to light during the last decade more facts of importance in reference to the history of gymnosperms than in reference to any other group of plants. This has enabled us to treat of the extinct groups in a way that was impossible ten years ago...

Book excerpt: The Junipers of the World contains a synthesis of data on evolution by examining: Geographic Variation: Pan-Arctic variation in Juniperus communis, etc. Speciation in sections of the genus: Species concepts, Speciation in Juniperus section Juniperus, etc. In addition, Keys to Juniperus are provided by region: Eastern Hemisphere, Europe (including Azores, Canary Islands, Asia Minor and Africa), Central Asia (Turkmenistan to western Himalayas), China, Far East (Japan, Korea, Sakhalin Island, Taiwan), Western Hemisphere, Continental North America, United States and Canada, Mexico and Guatemala, and the Caribbean. Also included are Species' Descriptions, Distribution Maps and Plant Photos, and chapters on Hybridization, Ecology, Cultivated Junipers, Commercial uses of leaf and wood oils of Juniperus, a Cross Indexed Synonymy of Juniperus, and Tables on the Leaf essential oils by species in sections. This book supplements the web site www.juniperus.org and the reader will find literature citations and a detailed discussion of data that is not present on the web site. The Junipers of the World is now the authoritative reference for Juniperus Prof.Adams has presented arguments for the recognition of species and varieties by showing the data analyses that led to taxonomic decisions. This is one of the few treatments that really integrates data and the reasoning behind taxonomic decisions. In addition, Prof. Adams is candid in admitting that the recognition of some taxa are not well supported and deserve additional study. An essential reference book that will be useful for herbaria, museums, wildlife biologists, Range scientist, foresters, ecologists and all who are involved in identification and study of Juniperus species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the North American Gymnosperms: Exclusive of the Cycadales but Together With Certain Exotic Species In presenting this volume to working botanists the hope is indulged that it may also prove of service to engineers and especially to foresters. During its progress through the press various opportunities have been offered for testing not only the accuracy and value of the diagnoses for the recognition of woods about the identity of which there was some doubt, but also its general application to the elucidation of important questions relating to practical forestry; and the fact that such a work is greatly needed at this time, and may materially assist in the development of modern forestry, has been strongly emphasized. An important field for useful research may be found in an extension of the studies here indicated, not only with respect to exotic gymnosperms, but in their application to dicotyledonous woods, many of which present problems of great scientific interest and practical value. An effort has been made to keep the work up to date, especially with respect to the treatment of fossil woods, but the author is only too conscious of many imperfections which it is hoped the application of the book to practical service may assist in making clear and ultimately removing.
