Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhism and Sikhism, founded by the Lord Buddha and Guru Nanak respectively are both religions of India with a two thousand-year gap between the two faiths. Tarungpa Tulku in his 1966 article Guru Nanak in Tibet—A Buddhist view point wrote that Tibetan Buddhists have a special connection with Sikhism due to the belief that Guru Nanak was a manifestation of Guru Padmasambhava. It is with this curiousity that the idea for this book was conceived, leading to the discovery of an astonishing number of similarities between the two spiritual traditions. This comparative study, the first major attempt of its kind, scoured the entire Sikh Scripture Shri Guru Granth Sahib and found numerous parallels with the Buddhist Canon, especially Pali; ranging from the life stories of the founding fathers of the two faiths, their social agenda and core tenets to articles of faith, including religious symbolism. It is hoped that this research can in some way, help to blur the divisions between religious labels and bring out pure spirituality—devoid of fixation on religious externalities which leads to much dissent, especially in this degenerate ere. While acknowledging the rich diversity and uniqueness of each spiritual tradition, this book eventually comes to the conclusion that spirituality transcends religious labels. We have come to appreciate that although the externalities of religion may differ vastly—spiritual insights remain universal!

Book excerpt: Within the Tantra tradition, reliance upon and devotion to one’s Guru are of paramount importance — without them progress on the path to Enlightenment cannot be made. Thus, Guru Yoga is the foundation of Mahayana tantric practice, and gives vitality to the serious practitioner’s meditation. This edition of The Guru Puja and The Hundred Deities of the Land of Joy provides the students with two essential prayers for such practice, and the juxtaposition of the Tibetan transliteration and English translation of these prayers is intended to facilitate their use by non-Tibetan Buddhist practitioners.
Book Synopsis Puṣpikā: Tracing Ancient India Through Texts and Traditions by : Nina Mirnig
Download or read book Puṣpikā: Tracing Ancient India Through Texts and Traditions written by Nina Mirnig and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2013-12-23 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is perhaps commonplace to say that India is one of the world's richest and most enticing cultures. One thousand years have passed since Albiruni, arguably the first "Indologist", wrote his outsider's account of the subcontinent and two hundred years have passed since the inception of Western Indology. And yet, what this monumental scholarship has achieved is still outweighed by the huge tracts of terra incognita: thousands of works lacking scholarly attention and even more manuscripts which still await careful study whilst decaying in the unforgiving Indian climate. In September 2009 young researchers and graduate students in this field came together to present their cutting-edge work at the first International Indology Graduate Research Symposium, which was held at Oxford University. This volume, the first in a new series which will publish the proceedings of the Symposium, will make important contributions to the study of the classical civilisation of the Indian sub-continent. The series, edited by Nina Mirnig, Péter-Dániel Szántó and Michael Williams, will strive to cover a wide range of subjects reaching from literature, religion, philosophy, ritual and grammar to social history, with the aim that the research published will not only enrich the field of classical Indology but eventually also contribute to the studies of history and anthropology of India and Indianised Central and South-East Asia.

Book Synopsis The Guru Principle by : Lama Shenpen Hookham
Download or read book The Guru Principle written by Lama Shenpen Hookham and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear-headed and relatable guidebook for navigating the student-teacher relationship by one of the first female Buddhist teachers in the West. All major forms of Buddhism stress the need for a teacher. However, the importance of having a guide or guru is sometimes a source of cultural and spiritual confusion as Buddhism expands in the West. A clear understanding of the Buddhist view of the guru is essential for the student-teacher relationship to be beneficial for one's spiritual growth. Collecting over fifty years of personal experiences as both a student and a teacher, Shenpen Hookham writes candidly of the opportunities and challenges facing modern Dharma students in the West who wish to study with a teacher. Traditional texts often do not reflect how the student-teacher relationship manifests in practice, which leaves many pressing questions and a great deal of confusion in communities taking root in the West. With honesty and clarity, Hookham discusses the roles of the teacher, practices related to the guru, and commonly asked questions she receives as a teacher. This handbook is the first of its kind, breaking down in a pragmatic and relatable way everything you need to know to enter a student-teacher relationship with open eyes and an open heart.
