Rich draws upon his vast expertise and enjoy as a marine biologist to offer readers with a comprehensive assessment of the Gulf's numerous ecosystems and the species that inhabit them. The book gives precise descriptions of various fishing grounds, inclusive of their geographical functions, seasonal versions, and the great strategies for catching specific sorts of fish and shellfish. Rich's insights into the behavior and habitat alternatives of key species inclusive of cod, haddock, lobster, and scallops make this book an invaluable useful resource for both leisure and business fishermen. Beyond serving as a realistic manual for anglers, "Fishing Grounds of the Gulf of Maine" underscores the significance of conservation and sustainable control practices. Rich emphasizes the want for responsible stewardship to ensure the lengthy-term fitness and productivity of the area's fisheries. Book excerpt: A chronicle of changes through the seasons both above and within the sea, A COASTAL COMPANION follows the arrival and departure of migrating shorebirds in spring and fall, schools of fish as they move in and out of our region, and the natural cycles of our bays, rivers, marshes, and coastal forests. Part field guide, part almanac, the book also highlights writers, artists, and scientists who have chosen the Gulf of Maine as their subject matter. Poems by twelve contemporary poets open each chapter, and illustrations by two Maine artists, Kimberleigh Martul-March and Margaret Campbell, are featured throughout the text. This is a book to keep close at hand, to be read not all at once, but through the seasons, one day at a time, and enjoyed year after year.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geographic Information Systems and Ocean Mapping in Support of Fisheries Conference evolved from a commitment by Chris Chryssostomidis, Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sea Grant College Program and John Boreman, Director of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center NOAA/NMFS to identify ways to collaborate on geospatial mapping in support of fisheries management. A Steering Committee representing a broad spectrum of organizations and agencies was invaluable in identifying themes, recommending speakers, and providing advice for framing the discussions. The structure included presentations and posters by participants. The success of the workshop was not only due to the excellent input from the speakers and poster presenters, but also from the networking and animated conversations among the attendees. Each of the presenters was asked to focus on what is needed to enhance our ability to manage fisheries and to use geographic information systems (GIS) and mapping data more effectively. The focus was on regional mapping initiatives and highlighted sophisticated data management capabilities needed to realize important ocean mapping products and analysis. Several of the speakers provided case studies, in which geographic information systems and ocean mapping were critical tools in the management process. Dick Pickrill, Director Canadian Marine Environmental Geoscience, in his opening remarks noted that the 21st century will be known for "knowledge-based integrated management of ocean resources" that portend a new role for marine science. This theme was repeated throughout the presentations and posters. Seafloor mapping efforts to collect the necessary data and GIS tools to support ecosystem-based management require integration, collaboration, and cooperation to produce products that are designed to address stakeholders' needs. Statistical analyses are used to integrate information and support development of meaningful models. Sophisticated data management capabilities are needed to realize important GIS activities and products. The importance of mapping product accessibility for stakeholders was also emphasized throughout the day. Among the highlighted approaches were EcoGIS tools for ecosystem approach to fisheries management, the Gulf of Maine Ocean Data Partnership (GoMODP), the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS), greater online data operability, and stakeholder participation through internet mapping and online geographic information system (GIS) tools. Several approaches using online GIS tools are being developed for ensuring products are applicable to users needs and were presented at the conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat: GeoHab Atlas of Seafloor Geomorphic Features and Benthic Habitats, Second Edition, provides an updated synthesis of seabed geomorphology and benthic habitats. This new edition includes new case studies from all geographic areas and habitats that were not included in the previous edition, including the Arctic, Asia, Africa and South America. Using multibeam sonar, the benthic ecology of submarine features, such as fjords, sand banks, coral reefs, seamounts, canyons, mud volcanoes and spreading ridges is revealed in unprecedented detail. This timely release offers new understanding for researchers in Marine Biodiversity, environmental managers, ecologists, and more. Explores the relationships between seabed geomorphology, oceanography and biology Provides global case studies which directly focus on habitats, including both biological and physical data Describes ways to detect change in the marine environment (change in the condition of benthic habitats), a critical aspect for judging the performance of policies and legislation
