Book excerpt: This in-depth scale and arpeggio text is core curriculum at the University of Southern California's Studio Guitar Department, which is part of the prestigiousFlora L. Thornton School of Music, located in Los Angeles, California. Using a comprehensive approach that includes three different organizational systems, it covers the technical foundation that is necessary for playing any style of music. The CAGED system (five positions), the Finger Stretch system (all twelve keys inone position) and the Three-Note Per String system (seven patterns) are examined. Although each of these three systems is examined, the CAGED system serves as the basis for much of the material covered in this book. Instead of traditional musical notation, the book uses fingerboard diagrams to focus on the visual aspect of the patterns. The goal is to present an approach to understanding and mastering the fingerboard by outlining the best and most practical elements of these different systems. Book One presents patterns for the major scale and its relative modes, the major pentatonic scale, the minor pentatonic scale, and the blues scale. Along with these scale forms, patterns for arpeggios that are for the most part diatonic to (in the key of) the major scale are presented. These include major, minor, diminished and augmented triads, andalso major 7, dominant 7, minor 7, minor 7(-?+5), and diminished 7 chords.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arpeggios are chord notes played one at a time rather than strummed or plucked all together. They are an essential part of great improvising and melody writingbecause playing chord notes in the right places creates solid melody lines. Chord notes sound more resolved than notes that are chromatic (out of the key). Practicing arpeggios will improve your ability to learn melodies, make reading music easier, and develop your tone and picking accuracy. The first part of thisbook focuses on the basic fingerings of the folliowing six arpeggios: major 7th,major 7th (#5), dominant 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th (b5), and diminished 7th. This book along with its accompanying audio represents a comprehensive guide to all things arpeggio. It delves into traditional applications of arpeggios, as well as howthey relate to slash chords, modal music and more. The student will learn about how arpeggios fall over standard chord progressions, as well as how to embellisharpeggios to make them more musical in performance situations. Book excerpt: This in-depth blues rhythm guitar text is core curriculum of the University of Southern California's Studio Guitar Department, which is part of the prestigious Flora L. Thornton School of Music, located in Los Angeles, California. It features eighteen twelve-bar blues rhythm guitar accompaniments in the style of guitarists such as Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Nine of the songs use a shuffle feel and nine use a straight eighth note feel. the play along CD contains two versions of each of the eighteen songs in the book. the first version has the guitar part and the second version is without the guitar. This gives you the ability to play along with the guitar part as a guide and also to play along with the track as the only guitarist. The examples are written using traditional musical notation and tablature. Included for each song is a short description of the important points to consider when learning each example. the book presents songs that will expand the guitarist's vocabulary by presenting a variety of different ways a guitarist can play through the twelve bar blues. A number of different chord variations, keys and tempos are used in demonstrating these eighteen idiomatic rhythm guitar parts that have been used by the masters.

Book excerpt: The contemporary world faces unprecedented upheaval and change forcing institutions of all types to rethink how they are designed and how they must now function if they are to survive into an uncertain future. The performing arts are no exception; in an era of constant change and technological transformation, arts organizations and their leaders face significant organizational challenges if they are to maintain their relevance. Arts Leadership: Creating Sustainable Arts Organizations provides a contemporary overview of the field of arts leadership, focused on the performing arts. It examines what these challenges are, how they are affecting the performing arts and arts organizations in general and proposes creative ways to reimagine, build and lead sustainable arts organizations in this uncharted environment. With a global perspective drawn from his extensive experience advising arts organizations around the world and based on his own work successfully leading important performing arts organizations in the United States, Foster proposes an innovative approach to organizational design, systems, and structures for arts leaders in the 21st century that is based in ecological thinking and the creative process that is intrinsic to the arts. In disrupting conventional arts leadership practice, the book provides an exceptional tool to understand a unique sector, and is essential reading for students and practitioners across the creative and cultural industries.

Book excerpt: In our noisy world, music is the key to inner silence Richard Wolf first tried Zen meditation in his teens, but no matter in what posture or for how long he sat, transcendence proved stubbornly out of reach. It was only years later that he found the bridge that could take him there: music. In Tune charts twelve “bridges”—skills and sensibilities refined in musical practice that carry over to mindfulness and meditation, among them: Concentration Posture Harmony Silence The Art of Deep Listening Transcending the Self This inspirational guide offers a wealth of music-based exercises to enhance daily meditation and creativity. Plus, Wolf shares personal anecdotes of eminent musicians—from Miles Davis to Dr. Dre—to illuminate points along the intersection of music and mindful living. As you begin to move fluidly between these two transformative disciplines, you’ll notice the focus, composure, and peacefulness that comes from practice—as well as the joys of tuning in to the music all around you, and to the symphony that plays silently from within.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Awangarda, Lisa Cooper Vest explores how the Polish postwar musical avant-garde framed itself in contrast to its Western European counterparts. Rather than a rejection of the past, the Polish avant-garde movement emerged as a manifestation of national cultural traditions stretching back into the interwar years and even earlier into the nineteenth century. Polish composers, scholars, and political leaders wielded the promise of national progress to broker consensus across generational and ideological divides. Together, they established an avant-garde musical tradition that pushed against the limitations of strict chronological time and instrumentalized discourses of backwardness and forwardness to articulate a Polish road to modernity. This is a history that resists Cold War periodization, opening up new ways of thinking about nations and nationalism in the second half of the twentieth century.

Moving away from shapes and patterns, this knowledge of intervals on the fretboard and its geometric properties leads to an intelligent choice of notes based on their harmonic function. Praised by guitar greats Brent Mason, Biréli Lagrène, Brett Garsed, as well as Jimmy Brown (Guitar World) and Prof. Richard Smith (USC), Intervallic Fretboard demonstrates the versatility of intervallic thinking in various music genres and playing styles.Accompanying CD/audio is available separately (see website).– www.intervallicfretboard.com –
