Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like no other book available, Working with Students with Disabilities: A Guide for School Counselors provides comprehensive coverage of school counselors’ roles in special education and working with students with disabilities and connects that coverage to both the ASCA national model and CACREP standards. In Working with Students with Disabilities, school counselors will find thoughtful analyses of the legal and regulatory basis for many of the practices in special education, including an overview of pertinent laws including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. They’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the leadership role that school counselors should play in supporting students, teachers, and families, and they’ll also come away with an understanding of the common challenges—like bullying, cyberbullying, and successful transitioning from high school to adult life— to which students with disabilities may be more vulnerable, as well as less common challenges such as behavioral difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and many more.

Book excerpt: Common Core State Standards and the Speech-Language Pathologist: Standards-Based Intervention for Special Populations is a tool for the analysis of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the development of interventions to meet student-specific needs. The CCSS is an education initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should understand in English language arts and mathematics by the end of each grade. The initiative seeks to establish consistent education standards across the United States and ensure that graduating students are prepared to enter college or the workforce. As of 2015, forty-three states had adopted the CCSS. With the implementation of the CCSS, it is critical that speech-language pathologists collaborate with educators to enable the success of students with communication disorders as well as English language learners. This text offers a practical approach for application of the CCSS with a parallel analysis of children's strengths and needs to create a template for intervention. It addresses strategies to facilitate the success of students in accessing and achieving the expectations of the general curriculum, with a focus on students with communication disorders, hearing loss, vision loss, deaf-blindness, specific learning disabilities, autism, multiple disabilities, and English language learners. Key features include: Background and implications of the CCSSChapters written by experts in the fieldTools for analysis of the language expectations of the CCSS and a framework for aligning intervention (both direct and classroom-based) with the CCSS for students at elementary and secondary levelsCollaboration strategies to facilitate success in the classroomMultiple case studies Common Core State Standards and the Speech-Language Pathologist is a must-have resource for any speech-language pathologist working with children, as well as their education and administration partners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics and Law for School Psychologists is the single best source of authoritative information on the ethical and legal issues school psychologists face every day. Designed specifically to meet the unique needs of psychologists in school settings, this book includes the most up-to-date standards and requirements while providing an introduction to ethical codes, ethical decision making, and the legal underpinnings that protect the rights of students and their parents. This new seventh edition has been extensively updated with the latest research and changes to the law, with an increased focus on ethical-legal considerations associated with the use of digital technologies. Coverage includes new case law on privacy rights, electronic record keeping, the 2014 Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, digital assessment platforms, the latest interpretations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and more. Ethics texts for counseling and psychology are plentiful, and often excellent—but this book is the only reference that speaks directly to the concerns and issues specific to psychologists in school settings. Case vignettes, end-of-chapter questions, and discussion topics facilitate deeper insight and learning, while updated instructor's resources bring this key reference right into the classroom. Keeping up with the latest research and legal issues is a familiar part of a psychologist's duties, but a practice centered on children in an educational setting makes it both critical and more complex. Ethics and Law for School Psychologists provides a central resource for staying up to date and delivering ethically and legally sound services within a school setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, children and adolescents worldwide return to the educational setting having sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The possible negative consequences of TBI range from mild to severe and include neurological, cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral difficulties. Within the school setting, the negative effects of TBI tend to persist or worsen over time, often resulting in academic and social difficulties that require formal and informal educational assistance and support. School psychologists and other educational professionals are well-positioned to help ensure students with TBI receive this assistance and support. Working with Traumatic Brain Injury in Schools is a comprehensive practitioner-oriented guide to effective school-based services for students who have experienced a TBI. It is primarily written for school-based professionals who have limited or no neurological or neuropsychological training; however, it contains educational information that is useful to professionals with extensive knowledge in neurology and/or neuropsychology. This book is also written for parents and guardians of students with TBI because of their integral role in the transition, school-based assessment, and school-based intervention processes. Chapter topics include: basic brain anatomy and physiology; head injury and severity level classifications; biomechanics of injury; injury recovery and rehabilitation; neurological, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, social, and academic consequences; understanding community-based assessment findings; a framework for school-based assessment (TBI-SNNAP); school-based psychoeducational report writing, and school-based interventions; monitoring pharmacological interventions; and prevention. An accompanying website includes handouts, sample reports, and training templates to assist professionals in recognizing and responding to students with TBI.

(1) Each facility or part of a facility constructed by, on behalf of, or for the use of a public entity shall be designed and constructed in such manner that the facility or part of the facility is readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities, if the construction was commenced after January 26, 1992. (2) Exception for structural impracticability. (i) Full compliance with the requirements of this section is not required where a public entity can demonstrate that it is structurally impracticable to meet the requirements. Full compliance will be considered structurally impracticable only in those rare circumstances when the unique characteristics of terrain prevent the incorporation of accessibility features. (ii) If full compliance with this section would be structurally impracticable, compliance with this section is required to the extent that it is not structurally impracticable. In that case, any portion of the facility that can be made accessible shall be made accessible to the extent that it is not structurally impracticable. (iii) If providing accessibility in conformance with this section to individuals with certain disabilities (e.g., those who use wheelchairs) would be structurally impracticable, accessibility shall nonetheless be ensured to persons with other types of disabilities, (e.g., those who use crutches or who have sight, hearing, or mental impairments) in accordance with this section.

Now featuring new material on pediatric life care planning and case management, including brachial plexus injuries and neurodevelopmental disorders, this new edition provides guidance and planning for cases across the lifespan. It begins with a series of chapters examining ten different professional specializations that often contribute to a life care plan, before providing critical information for developing life care plans for individuals with different physical, mental, and cognitive conditions including spinal cord injury, brain injury, and chronic pain. Uniquely comprehensive, the book also includes chapters on the forensic and legal context of life care planning, as well as equipment/technology, evidence-based literature/resources, and special education/special needs planning relevant to pediatric life care planning. Also including chapters dedicated to life care planning methodology and life care planning research, this is an essential resource for anyone practicing or studying life care planning or managing the needs of those requiring chronic medical care over the lifespan.
