Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete guide to the entire Sierra NevadaThe Sierra Nevada is one of the most scenic, biologically diverse, and historically rich mountain ranges in North America. Touring the Sierra Nevada covers the entire range and its adjacent regions, exploring the Sierra Nevada from such world-famous sites as Lake Tahoe and Yosemite to picturesque mining towns, scenic alpine lakes, lush vineyards, and colorful hidden byways. Koehler offers suggestions for long tours and exciting daytrips, as well as detailed information about the history, geology, flora and fauna, economy, and unique features of places along the way. The book is illustrated with photographs and maps of the regions she describes. Koehler includes excursions for automobile travelers as well as backcountry adventures for hikers. She provides information about attractions in the Sierra’s two “jumping-off” cities, Sacramento and Reno, as well as in some of the major towns within the range. There is practical advice about contacting parks, museums, historical sites, visitors’ bureaus, U.S. Forest Service offices, and other agencies; finding lodging, campgrounds, and restaurants along the way; preparing for weather and altitude changes; and identifying further sources of information about the region in published guides and other books, as well as on websites. Koehler offers her readers the literary companionship of an experienced, charming, and vivacious guide through one of America’s most fascinating regions.

Book excerpt: When other publishers are subdividing the Sierra Nevada into overly detailed miniature guides to increase the number of books for sale, California Roadtrip 395 brings everything into one source. California Roadtrip 395 explores the east side of the Sierra Nevada, covering activities along Highway 395 starting at the Mojave Desert and ending at the Oregon Border. Activities described include mountain biking, rock climbing, peak bagging, day hiking, fishing, geology, historic mining camps, hot springs, and camping. This guide serves as a first pass introduction to the region with special focus in Owens Valley, Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake area, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Mount Lassen. Most activities can be done in a single day, are accessible from Highway 395, and are accompanied by maps and photographs. These trips represent some of the most classic or high quality rides, hikes, climbs, and camping available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The guide to California stands out among the rest of the WPA guides for the quality of its writing, photographs, and pen-and-ink drawings. The Golden State contains much diversity of people, places, and things, and the WPA Guide expertly reflects and records the eclectic quality of this quintessentially American state. Published in 1939, the guide’s essays on history cover everything from the gold rush to the movie industry at the nascence of Hollywood’s golden age, and its back-road tours through California's coastal fishing villages and mountain mining towns still provide a splendid alternative to freeways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is meant to give travelers of Highway 395, whether it be by car, RV or motorcycle, those planning vacations in areas along 395, and others interested in what this iconic highway has to offer, an assortment of short hikes and walks and other nearby diversions to serve as a starting point for their adventures. By giving enough information to introduce some of the more easily accessible countryside, my goal is to get people out of their cars and hurried mindsets, and give them a reason to 'stop and smell the pavement'! Hopefully this will also serve the purpose of, as Elmer Fudd would say, "getting a wittle west and wewaxation", and maybe a story or two to tell once the adventure is over. These are not the only stops a traveler can make but I believe they are a good representation of what 395 has to offer in the way of history, geography and wildlife viewing opportunities. I encourage all who adventure along the highway to stop and explore other areas that they find interesting. To quote Buddha, "It is better to travel well than to arrive".This guide tries to explore stops and features along the highway that are of likely interest to the passing motorist. Historic stops, if there is a trail or area large enough to wander around in, a couple of National Parks within a reasonable distance of the highway, obvious geographic phenomena that just demand your attention, and stops for possible wildlife sightings are the main focus of these guides.
