Book excerpt: Guide to Food Safety and Quality during Transportation, Controls, Standards and Practice, Second Edition provides a solid foundation outlining logistics and delivery control solutions to protect the food transportation industry. Since its first publication, the U.S. FDA has finalized a number of Food Safety Modernization Act rules designed to improve the protection of the public from adulterants known to cause illness and death. Food shippers, carriers and receivers throughout the world are impacted as import controls have tightened. This book provides the information needed to comply with the Act’s requirements and tactics on how to achieve safety in the food supply chain. Filled with legal, liability and practical solutions, food transporters and buyers will be able to structure company-wide business practices as part of their overall food safety and quality agendas. For food safety and quality students, the book provides much needed insight into a critical, but overlooked, aspect of the food safety and food quality spectrums. This food transporter piece of the overall food safety and quality puzzle provides the linking mechanism needed to improve the supply chain communication and interdependence sought after by governmental and industry executives. Includes important information on how to comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act Includes technological advances in sanitation, testing, and traceability, and highlights cost effective solutions to enhance food safety Provides practical solutions to transportation problems, including container sanitation, temperature controls, traceability, adulteration, and other food safety and quality issues Presents potential sources of adulteration, both chemical and biological at producer level, both domestic and foreign, to reduce transporter liability Provides new and updated information, including environmental monitoring, statistical control systems, supply-chain management, and more

Book excerpt: The book brings out an encyclopaedic picture of the potential areas of transformative Indian agriculture through innovations in science, technology, institutional and policy affairs directed in building a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat). The book has addressed the challenges to make India free from hunger, poverty and undernutrition, and suggested interventions with focus on all-inclusiveness and sustainability, peace and prosperity, and resilience to climate and other volatilities. Most of these propositions are analogous to the Sustainable Development Goals – Agenda 2030, which India has committed to achieve. The book especially covers critical needs for development on different fragile ecosystems such as coastal, desert, hill, ravine and other marginal ecosystems. The book will act as very useful guidance for the policy makers, and development communities, and a reference document to academicians as well. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This title is co-published with NIPA.

This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and medium agrifood enterprises (SMAEs) such as processors, transporters and other service providers, play an important role in achieving sustainable development objectives. For instance, they connect farmers to urban markets; make significant investments in rural areas; provide employment to vulnerable populations such as women and youth; and propel the modernization of agrifood value chains. In sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture comprises 53 percent of total employment and 15.5 percent of gross domestic product, supporting SMAEs can have great implications for pro-poor growth and rural transformation. To support SMAEs in fulfilling their potential, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been dedicating research to better understand their policy and technical needs. This publication is such output and aims to provide an assessment of the policy and institutional framework in Senegal shaping the business models of small and medium agrifood processors. This systemic appraisal of Senegal’s business enabling environment for SMAEs was cross-fertilized with an analysis of the business models of three rice millers, resulting in a related FAO technical study 'The role of small and medium agrifood enterprises in food systems transformation: the case of rice processors in Senegal'. The analyses were carried out using a multidisciplinary agrifood systems approach, which looks at policies and institutions related to procurement, operations, logistics, finance, marketing and sales, human resources, and strategic partnerships. Due to its well-articulated policy documents and the extensive research on various aspects of the business enabling environment conducted in the country, Senegal represents a compelling case to illustrate the links between policies and the activities of agrifood processors.

Book excerpt: Food safety regulators face a daunting task: crafting food safety performance standards and systems that continue in the tradition of using the best available science to protect the health of the American public, while working within an increasingly antiquated and fragmented regulatory framework. Current food safety standards have been set over a period of years and under diverse circumstances, based on a host of scientific, legal, and practical constraints. Scientific Criteria to Ensure Safe Food lays the groundwork for creating new regulations that are consistent, reliable, and ensure the best protection for the health of American consumers. This book addresses the biggest concerns in food safetyâ€"including microbial disease surveillance plans, tools for establishing food safety criteria, and issues specific to meat, dairy, poultry, seafood, and produce. It provides a candid analysis of the problems with the current system, and outlines the major components of the task at hand: creating workable, streamlined food safety standards and practices.
