Download or read book Normed Children written by Erik Schneider and published by Transcript Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gender- and sex-related norms have an impact on us from the first to the last day of our lives. What are the effects of such norms on the education of children and adolescents? Conveyed via parents/family, school, and peers, they seem to be an inseparable part of human relations. After its favorable reception in German-speaking countries from 2014 onwards, this title is now available in English. The texts show that the traditional assumption of a dualistic, bipolar normativity of sex and gender leads to children being taught gender-typical behavior. The contributions in this volume explore the reasons for these practices and open the debate on the divergence between the prevailing norms and the plurality of different life plans. In addition, the book helps to disengage the topic of sex and gender from a hitherto narrowly circumscribed context of sexual orientation. The contributions point the way towards a culture of respect and mutual acceptance and show new methodological as well as theoretical approaches, e.g. by introducing the figure of the continuum, so that, in future research projects, more than just the two sexes and genders of female and male might be considered as a new normality." -- Back cover.
Book Synopsis Gut Feeling and Digestive Health in Nineteenth-Century Literature, History and Culture by : Manon Mathias
Download or read book Gut Feeling and Digestive Health in Nineteenth-Century Literature, History and Culture written by Manon Mathias and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-17 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the historical and cultural origins of the gut-brain relationship now evidenced in numerous scientific research fields. Bringing together eleven scholars with wide interdisciplinary expertise, the volume examines literal and metaphorical digestion in different spheres of nineteenth-century life. Digestive health is examined in three sections in relation to science, politics and literature during the period, focusing on Northern America, Europe and Australia. Using diverse methodologies, the essays demonstrate that the long nineteenth century was an important moment in the Western understanding and perception of the gastroenterological system and its relation to the mind in the sense of cognition, mental wellbeing, and the emotions. This collection explores how medical breakthroughs are often historically preceded by intuitive models imagined throughout a range of cultural productions.

Book Synopsis Modeling Approaches and Algorithms for Advanced Computer Applications by : Abdelmalek Amine
Download or read book Modeling Approaches and Algorithms for Advanced Computer Applications written by Abdelmalek Amine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the last decades Computational Intelligence has emerged and showed its contributions in various broad research communities (computer science, engineering, finance, economic, decision making, etc.). This was done by proposing approaches and algorithms based either on turnkey techniques belonging to the large panoply of solutions offered by computational intelligence such as data mining, genetic algorithms, bio-inspired methods, Bayesian networks, machine learning, fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks, etc. or inspired by computational intelligence techniques to develop new ad-hoc algorithms for the problem under consideration. This volume is a comprehensive collection of extended contributions from the 4th International Conference on Computer Science and Its Applications (CIIA’2013) organized into four main tracks: Track 1: Computational Intelligence, Track 2: Security & Network Technologies, Track 3: Information Technology and Track 4: Computer Systems and Applications. This book presents recent advances in the use and exploitation of computational intelligence in several real world hard problems covering these tracks such as image processing, Arab text processing, sensor and mobile networks, physical design of advanced databases, model matching, etc. that require advanced approaches and algorithms borrowed from computational intelligence for solving them.
Book Synopsis A Vital Rationalist by : Georges Canguilhem
Download or read book A Vital Rationalist written by Georges Canguilhem and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-04 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Canguilhem is one of France's foremost historians of science. Trained as a medical doctor as well as a philosopher, he combined these practices to demonstrate to philosophers that there could be no epistemology without concrete study of the actual development of the sciences and to historians that there could be no worthwhile history of science without a philosophical understanding of the conceptual basis of all knowledge. A Vital Rationalist brings together for the first time a selection of Canguilhem's most important writings, including excerpts from previously unpublished manuscripts and a critical bibliography by Camille Limoges. Organized around the major themes and problems that have preoccupied Canguilhem throughout his intellectual career, the collection allows readers, whether familiar or unfamiliar with Canguilhem's work, access to a vast array of conceptual and concrete meditations on epistemology, methodology, science, and history. Canguilhem is a demanding writer, but Delaporte succeeds in marking out the main lines of his thought with unrivaled clarity; readers will come away with a heightened understanding of the complex and crucial place he holds in French intellectual history.
Download or read book Chaosophy written by Félix Guattari and published by Semiotext(e). This book was released on 1996 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Felix Guattari's essays, lectures, and interviews traces the militant anti-psychiatrist and theorist's thought and activity throughout the 1980s ("the winter years"). Concepts such as "micropolitics," "schizoanalysis," and "becoming-woman" open up new horizons for political and creative resistance in the "postmedia era." Guattari's energetic analyses of art, cinema, youth culture, economics, and power formations introduce a radically inventive thought process engaged in liberating subjectivity from the standardizing and homogenizing processes of global capitalism.
Book Synopsis Studying Film with André Bazin by : Blandine Joret
Download or read book Studying Film with André Bazin written by Blandine Joret and published by Film Theory in Media History. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of French film critic André Bazin (1918-1958) on the development of film studies, though generally acknowledged, remains contested. A passionate initiator of film culture during his lifetime, his ideas have been challenged, defended and revived throughout his afterlife. Studying Film with André Bazin offers an entirely original interpretation of major concepts from Bazin's legacy, such as auteur theory, realism, film language and the influence of film on other arts (poetry and painting in particular). By examining mostly unknown and uncollected texts, Blandine Joret explains Bazin's methodology and adopts it in a contemporary reading, linking his ideas to major philosophical and scientific frameworks as well as more recent media practices such as advertising, CGI, 3D cinema and Virtual Reality. In tune with 21st-century concerns in media culture and film studies, this book addresses a wide readership of film scholars, students and cinephiles.
