Book excerpt: This fully updated second edition the work previously known as The Handbook of Humanitarian Law in Armed Conflicts sets out an international 'manual' of humanitarian law in armed conflicts accompanied by case analysis and extensive explanatory commentary by a team of distinguished and internationally renowned experts. Topics examined include the historical development, legal basis, and scope of application of international humanitarian law; methods and means of combat; protection of the civilian population, and of the wounded, sick or shipwrecked, and of prisoners of war; the protection of cultural property; the law of neutrality; and the enforcement of international humanitarian law. This edition also incorporates new chapters covering the law of non-international armed conflicts and international peace operations. Highly topical issues including the role of the UN security council, the relevance of International Humanitarian Law in peacetime and post-conflict military operations, and enforcement through trials for war crimes in national and international courts are also discussed.

Book excerpt: This book offers the most authoritative commentary and analysis of international humanitarian law applicable in armed conflict available. It is based upon the Joint Service Regulation for the German Ministry of Defence, augmented with extensive international references, and accompanied bycommentary by a team of distinguished and internationally renowned experts. Whilst the past decades have seen consistent development of international law applicable in armed conflict, culminating in a series of International Covenants and Protocols, world events in recent years have made reassessment of the law both a timely and topical concern. This Handbook available for the first time in paperback will serve as an indispensable reference source for practising lawyers and academics working in the field of international humanitarian law and for military personnel worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume span a 35-year period of active involvement in the ‘reaffirmation and development of international humanitarian law’. A process under that name started in 1971 and ended in 1977 with the adoption of two Protocols Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 1949, one for international and one for internal armed conflicts. Subsequent developments brought a narrowing of this gap between international and internal armed conflicts, as well as growing recognition of the interplay between the law of armed conflict and human rights, the rediscovery of individual criminal liability for violations of international humanitarian law, the introduction of further prohibitions or restrictions on the use of specified weapons, and so on. In contrast with these positive developments, the period was negatively characterised by increasing disrespect, not only for some or other minor rule (such as what to do with cash taken from a prisoner of war at the time of his capture) but for the very principles underlying the entire body of the law of armed conflict: respect for the other as a human being and, hence, humane treatment of prisoners of war and other detainees, protection of civilians... Throughout the period, the author’s activities ranged from participation in lawmaking and law interpreting exercises, through attempts at explaining the law of armed conflict in its historical context and making propaganda for its faithful implementation, to critical or even bewildered observance of actual events. The papers brought together here reflect these diverse angles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founders of the Red Cross/ Red Crescent Movement proceeded from their involvement in specific experience to develop a series of Fundamental Principles. In Health and Humanitarian Concerns: Principles and Ethics, Dr. Henryk Leszek Zielinski proceeds from experience to Fundamental Principles and back again, providing health professionals with clear guidance for confronting specific problems - including natural disasters, forced feeding, torture, biomedical research and HIV and AIDS discrimination - while simultaneously presenting these medical and social dilemmas in the context of the broader humanitarian principles which underlie the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Upon reading Dr. Zielinski's book, health professionals will either change their approach to complex humanitarian solutions by following Dr. Zielinski's systematic approach, or they will maintain the same course of action but with a deeper understanding and a firmer commitment to the spirit and the letter of the Movement. In either case, Dr. Zielinski's book is an invaluable guide for all who seek to make a personal contribution to the relief of suffering in the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves primarily as a field guide and curriculum for organisations training personnel for conflict management missions abroad. Currently, a gap exists between practitioners and academia in the field of conflict management and peacebuilding. Few practitioners have studied conflict management, and few academics have experience as field workers. Conflict literature contains a range of important insights and analyses, but is useful only to a limited degree to practitioners. This book provides practitioners with a much needed guidebook which is easy to understand, academically solid and which identifies with their mission and helps them relate to real-time challenges in the field. The book focuses on a number of case studies, including peacebuilding efforts in East Timor, and offers a range of practical advice for persons about to embark on a mission, from the receipt of an appointment to establishment in the field and encountering the realities and practical challenges that handling conflicts may imply. This book will be of much interest to students of conflict management, peacebuilding and conflict resolution, as well as practitioners in the field.

Book excerpt: Today's international disaster management community faces demanding political and ethical challenges. In International Disaster Management Ethics, Liza Ireni Saban suggests that it is crucial for international aid organizations engaged in disaster management to attempt to lift the moral fog that envelops their practice and to alert them to the ethical implications and meaning of their decisions and actions, commitment to exercising ethical judgment, and leadership. Drawing on examples from large scale natural disasters—the 2003 Bam earthquake in Iran, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the 2005 hurricanes that struck the US Gulf Coast, the 2010 Haitian earthquake, and the 2013 Philippines typhoon—Saban applies current prominent perspectives on global justice to international disaster management, arguing that a process of codification will enhance the capacity to professionalize distributive decision making. Rather than being obligatory, taking into account global distributive considerations will become a defining part of the profession at a global level, at a time when international disaster relief is facing more and more severe natural disasters.

This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laws and norms that focus on women's lives in conflict have proliferated across the regimes of international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international human rights law and the United Nations Security Council. While separate institutions, with differing powers of monitoring and enforcement, implement these laws and norms, the activities of regimes overlap. Women's Rights in Armed Conflict under International Law is the first book to account for this pluralism and institutional diversity. This book identifies key aspects of how different regimes regulate women's rights in conflict, and how they interact. Using country case studies to reveal the practical implications of the fragmented protection of women's rights in conflict, this book offers a dynamic account of how regimes and institutions interact, the extent to which they reinforce each other, and the tensions and gaps in regulation that emerge.
