Book excerpt: I was the Fool-king of Soho and the number-one slag in the Groucho Club, the second drunkest member of the world's drunkest band. This was no disaster, though. It was a dream coming true.' For Alex James, music had always been a door to a more eventful life. But as bass player of Blur - one of the most successful British bands of all time - his journey was more exciting and extreme than he could ever have predicted. In Bit of a Blur he chronicles his journey from a slug-infested flat in Camberwell to a world of screaming fans and private jets - and his eventual search to find meaning and happiness (and, perhaps most importantly, the perfect cheese), in an increasingly surreal world.

Book excerpt: After receiving a grant from the National Science Foundation in 2012, art photographer Diane Tuft travelled to Antarctica to study and document the effects of ultraviolet and infrared radiation on the landscape. 'Gondwana: Images of an Ancient Land' chronicles the extraordinary results of that expedition, with over 50 stunning images that capture Antarctica's raw, untouched splendour with colours, textures, and compositions that verge on the surreal. Gondwana presents a living reflection of hundreds of millions of years of Earth's history, a mythical land as it has never been imagined before. She earned a degree in mathematics at the University of Connecticut before continuing her studies in art at Pratt Institute in New York. Book excerpt: Being mobile in today's world is influenced by many aspects including transnational ties, increased ease of access to transport, growing accessibility to technology, knowledge and information and changing socio-cultural outlooks and values. These factors can all engender a (re)formation of our everyday life and moving - as and for lifestyle - has, in many ways, become both easier and much more complex. This book highlights the crossroads between concepts of lifestyle and the growing body of work on 'mobilities'. The study of lifestyle offers a lens through which to study the kinds of moorings, dwellings, repetitions and routines around which mobilities become socially, culturally and politically meaningful. Bringing together scholars from geography, sociology, tourism, history and beyond, the authors illustrate the breadth and richness of mobilities research through the concept of lifestyle. Organised into four sections, the book begins by dealing with aspects of bodily performance through lifestyle mobility. Section two then looks at how we can use mobile methods within social research, whilst section three explores issues surrounding ideas of mobility, immobility and belonging. Finally, section four draws together a number of chapters that focus on the complexities of identity within mobility. Often drawing on ethnographic research, contributors all share one common feature: they are at the forefront of research into lifestyle mobilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amazon UK Bestseller Number 1 in Cycling and Top 3 in Travel and in Sport After a near fatal brain haemorrhage Steven Primrose-Smith decides that life is too short to hang around. Inspired, he jumps on his bicycle to travel a road that stretches 22,000 miles across the whole of Europe. During his ride through 53 countries, climbing the equivalent of 20 Everests, he dodges forest fires, packs of wild dogs and stray bulls, is twice mistaken for a tramp, meets a man in Bulgaria who lives under a table, discovers if ambassadors really do dish out pyramids of Ferrero Rocher at parties, transforms into a superhero after being savaged by radioactive mosquitoes near Chernobyl and comes close to death in France, Norway, Ukraine and Russia. Such a massive challenge requires calories and Steven gets his from the more unsavoury elements of European savouries: brains, testicles, lung and spleen stew, intestine sandwiches, sausages famous for smelling of poo, a handful of maggots and even a marmot. Nobody eats marmots. But the distance and his culinary adventures are only a part of the mission. His real objective is much more difficult. Will he be able to confirm something he has long suspected or will he, after all his searching, eventually find somewhere in Europe worse than his home town of Blackburn? Recent Amazon review comments: "If you love travel, you will love this book! This is by far the best cycle-based travel book I have read...I could not put it down! It's very well-written, naturally funny without trying too hard and... about the places and people he discovers, not the bike itself...Inspirational and very funny." "Highly entertaining - you'll laugh out loud. This is the funniest book I've read for a very long time. It's so much more than a story about a bike ride - it's a travelogue, a witty and astute observation about people and life, a candid description of many places you'd never even dream of visiting! Once you start to read it, I guarantee you WON'T put it down. I laughed out loud a dozen times before I'd even covered the first 3 chapters. Highly recommended." "Very entertaining - never a dull page! What a Journey - once I started it I literally had to keep reading until the end! His descriptions of people and places along the way made me feel like I was right beside him on his epic journey and he kept me laughing all the way along! A definite must read...I can't wait for his next book!" "A travelogue with a difference! BIG laughs, pithy observations on life, the universe and everything else and simply great stories. A great read from start to finish." "Thought-provoking and funny. This book made me laugh out loud as well as ponder the meaning of life; for anyone who has ever ridden a bike, done a bit of travelling or eaten food. Worth a read." "A must read. I really enjoyed this book! The author has a witty vision of life and a special sense of humour. Loved it!" "Fab book with wonderful descriptions of his traveling experiences...make this well written book a joy to read and am happy to recommend it." "Good fun and a great read. Laugh out loud funny...Looking forward to the sequel." "Loved it from the first sentence!" "a great read witty funny"

Book excerpt: "The Arctic Melt: Images of a Disappearing Landscape is a brilliant new monograph by universally acclaimed art and environmental photographer Diane Tuft. Following on the heels of Tuft's previous publication, Gondwana: Images of an Ancient Land, this new book showcases her breathtaking and visually astounding journey to capture the ice in the Arctic Circle before the constant melt renders the once-frozen landscape unrecognizable. The Arctic Melt features photographs of the North Pole, the mountain glaciers of Svalbard, Norway, and the icebergs and ice sheet of Greenland. In a remarkably new take on illustrating the effects of global warming, and with more than fifty stunning photographs, The Arctic Melt chronicles Tuft's passage through the waning tundra as millennia of ice thaw at a faster rate than ever before."--Jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a detailed ethnography, this book explores the promises and expectations of tourism in Cuba, drawing attention to the challenges that tourists and local people face in establishing meaningful connections with each other. Notions of informal encounter and relational idiom illuminate ambiguous experiences of tourism harassment, economic transactions, hospitality, friendship, and festive and sexual relationships. Comparing these various connections, the author shows the potential of touristic encounters to redefine their moral foundations, power dynamics, and implications, offering new insights into how contemporary relationships across difference and inequality are imagined and understood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pleasure Island explores the tourism industry in Cuba between 1920 and 1960, as international travel ceased to be primarily a privilege of the wealthy, and incorporated the world's growing middle class. Rosalie Schwartz examines tourists' changing ideas of leisure and recreation, as well as the response of a colonial-era Spanish city turned fleshpot and endless cabaret. The tourism industry mushroomed in and around Havana after 1920, as hundreds of thousands of North Americans transformed the city in collaboration with a local business and political elite. The Depression, exacerbated by a bloody revolution in 1933, plunged the tourism industry into a downward spiral; its steady comeback after World War II, and Mafia-influenced 1950s heyday, ended abruptly when Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. The tourist stream was diverted to Cuba's Caribbean neighbors, where it remains. This work is a history of a very idiosyncratic industry, as well as a study of mass tourism's influence on the behavior, attitudes, and cultures of two politically linked but diverse nations. Rosalie Schwartz is a former lecturer in the Department of History at San Diego State University. She is the author of Across the Rio to Freedom and Lawless Liberators: Political Banditry and Cuban Independence, which won the 1990 Hubert B. Herring Book Award of the Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies.
