Book excerpt: We all want: guaranteed income stream for life never outlive nest egg never give up control of assets My clients want a guaranteed income stream for life AND they don't want to run out of money AND they don't want to give up control of their assets. They want the perfect financial retirement. They want an inflation-proof income for the rest of their lives without giving up control of their assets. They want to reduce income taxes. They don't want to get stuck paying for the deficit from two wars, two tax cuts and two bank bailouts. Today you can buy that guaranteed inflation-proof income stream to match your needs. We don't know if the market will continue to climb, whether inflation will return in force, whether we might need cash to pay for extraordinary medical needs. Since no advisor can know the future, we need to stay flexible. Financial advisors favor high-cost products. You need less-biased information to find the best alternatives for you. I help you decide which alternative is best for you, now and later. You don't give up control of your assets. Only you know what fits your lifestyle at each stage. You use low-cost products so you keep more of your assets growing. You avoid high fee advisors and products. Most of us were faced with difficult retirement options. In the past, employers offered defined-benefit pensions. However, most of us had to create a self-directed retirement plans (401k, etc). We had to figure out which investments to make. If we were lucky, our employer matched our contributions. Most of us were not trained to make good investment choices and we didn't. It was hard to duplicate the guaranteed income that former generations received from their employer-paid pensions.

To create your own personal pension, a monthly income that lasts for the rest of your natural life. With the subpar performance of the markets, record-high personal debt levels, and shockingly low savings rates, it's clear that many Canadians expecting to retire in the next decade simply don't have a sufficient nest egg to ensure a worry-free retirement. If you no longer have the time to wait and hope for your traditional investments to pay off, the answer is to "pensionize your nest egg" using the new technique of product allocation set out in this book. Pensionize Your Nest Egg explains how to Recognize if you really have a pension or just a tax-sheltered savings plan. Become informed about the new risks you and your nest egg face in retirement and why asset allocation, despite its value in the accumulation stage of life, is not sufficient to protect you and your money. Measure your retirement sustainability quotient (RSQ) and your Financial Legacy Value (FLV)-then choose a retirement income plan on the Retirement Income Frontier. Understand how product allocation differs from asset allocation, how to allocate your nest egg across three product silos, and learn about the new financial products that are available to protect against the new risks you face. In a job market upended by COVID-19—with Canadians caught in the grip of precarious labour, stagnant wages, a climate crisis, and the steady creep of automation—an ever-louder chorus of voices calls for a liveable and obligation-free basic income. Could a basic income guarantee be the way forward to democratize security and intervene where the market economy and social programs fail? Jamie Swift and Elaine Power scrutinize the politics and the potential behind a radical proposal in a post-pandemic world: that wealth should be built by a society, not individuals. And that we all have an unconditional right to a fair share. In these pages, Swift and Power bring to the forefront the deeply personal stories of Canadians who participated in the 2017–2019 Ontario Basic Income Pilot; examine the essential literature and history behind the movement; and answer basic income’s critics from both the right and left.

Book excerpt: * Insurers take $ Billions from our annuity plans * Inflation cuts payment value in HALF * Guaranteed annuity income ends at death * Insurers never return our annuity assets Yes, everyone is talking about annuities for retirement income. They are popular; but they are expensive. They take billions of dollars from our retirement funds in exchange for a guaranteed stream of payments. But those payments can end at our death. Our family may lose the legacy we worked hard to accumulate. Insurers keep the remainder of our annuity account. And, if we have a medical emergency, there are no refunds. If we live a long time, those guaranteed payments lose purchasing power-our $1000 a month income will buy only $500 worth of goods. We can avoid all of these possible losses and keep our retirement funds growing and producing income for life. We can maintain control of our assets for emergencies and a family legacy. We can create an inflation-proof income for the rest of our lives without giving up control of our assets. Today we can create an inflation-proof income stream to match our needs while we keep building our assets for the future. We can create this stream of income AND grow our assets AND have access to our funds for emergencies with a FREE account. Only you know what fits your lifestyle needs at each stage of retirement. You use low-cost products so you keep more of your assets growing. You avoid high-fee advisors and products. Now we can take advantage of a better opportunity. We can decide how much to spend, how much to invest and which assets to buy so we will be assured of enough assets for whatever the future brings. Now you can create a guaranteed income and grow you assets.

Book excerpt: Shouldn’t everyone receive a stake in society's wealth? Could we create a fairer world by guaranteeing income to all? What would this mean for our health, wealth, and happiness? Basic income is a revolutionary idea that guarantees regular, unconditional cash transfers from the government to all citizens. It is an acknowledgement that everyone plays a part in generating the wealth currently enjoyed by only a few and would rectify the recent breakdown in income distribution. Political parties across the world are now adopting this innovative policy and the idea generates headlines every day. Guy Standing has been at the forefront of thought surrounding basic income for the past thirty years, and in this book he covers in authoritative detail its effects on the economy, poverty, work, and labor; dissects and disproves the standard arguments against basic income; explains what we can learn from pilots across the world; and illustrates exactly why basic income has now become such an urgent necessity.

Vettese will show you how to mitigate risk and secure your financial future in these unpredictable times. As COVID-19 rocks the economy in an unprecedented black swan event, retirees and those who are preparing to retire need answers to pressing questions about their financial futures. Originally published in 2018, the second edition of Retirement Income for Life, has been completely revised and updated, and now includes: New chapters on early retirement, retiring single, what to do when one spouse dies young, and more. Three strategies for mitigating your personal financial risk in the current downturn in equities and other investment products. Advice on how to plan for (and even benefit from) the coming bear market, resulting from COVID-19, which will create unprecedented equity buying opportunities, possibly as early as 2021. Information on the impact of unbearably low interest rates on annuities and fixed income investments and what to do if you hold them. The reasons retirees should be deferring CPP until age 70 and why the case for this is stronger than ever. Author Frederick Vettese demystifies a complex and often frightening subject and provides practical, actionable advice based on five enhancements the reader can make to mitigate risk and secure their financial future. With over one thousand Canadians turning 65 every day, the cultivation of good decumulation practices — the way in which you draw down assets in retirement, ideally to have a secure income for the rest of your life — has become an urgent matter that no one can afford to ignore.

Book excerpt: A brilliantly reported, global look at universal basic income—a stipend given to every citizen—and why it might be the answer for our age of rising inequality, persistent poverty, and dazzling technology. Imagine if every month the government deposited $1,000 into your checking account, with no strings attached and nothing expected in return. It sounds crazy. But it has become one of the most influential and discussed policy ideas of our time. The founder of Facebook, President Obama’s chief economist, Canada and Finland’s governments, the conservative and labor movements’ leading intellectual lights—all are seriously debating versions of a UBI. In this sparkling and provocative book, economics writer Annie Lowrey looks at the global UBI movement. She travels to Kenya to see how a UBI is lifting the poorest people on earth out of destitution, India to see how inefficient government programs are failing the poor, South Korea to interrogate UBI’s intellectual pedigree, and Silicon Valley to meet the tech titans financing UBI pilots in expectation of a world with advanced artificial intelligence and little need for human labor. Lowrey also examines the challenges the movement faces: contradictory aims, uncomfortable costs, and most powerfully, the entrenched belief that no one should get something for nothing. The UBI movement calls into question our deepest intuitions about what we owe each other. Yet as Lowrey persuasively shows, a UBI—giving people money—is not just a solution to our problems, but a better foundation for our society in this age of marvels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two fundamentally different philosophies for retirement income planning, which I call probability-based and safety-first, diverge on the critical issue of where a retirement plan is best served: in the risk/reward trade-offs of a diversified and aggressive investment portfolio that relies primarily on the stock market, or in the contractual protections of insurance products that integrate the power of risk pooling and actuarial science alongside investments. The probability-based approach is generally better understood by the public. It advocates using an aggressive investment portfolio with a large allocation to stocks to meet retirement goals. My earlier book How Much Can I Spend in Retirement? A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Strategies provides an extensive investigation of probability-based approaches. But this investments-only attitude is not the optimal way to build a retirement income plan. There are pitfalls in retirement that we are less familiar with during the accumulation years. The nature of risk changes. Longevity risk is the possibility of living longer than planned, which could mean not having resources to maintain the retiree's standard of living. And once retirement distributions begin, market downturns in the early years can disproportionately harm retirement sustainability. This is sequence-of-returns risk, and it acts to amplify the impacts of market volatility in retirement. Traditional wealth management is not equipped to handle these new risks in a fulfilling way. More assets are required to cover spending goals over a possibly costly retirement triggered by a long life and poor market returns. And yet, there is no assurance that assets will be sufficient. For retirees who are worried about outliving their wealth, probability-based strategies can become excessively conservative and stressful. This book focuses on the other option: safety-first retirement planning. Safety-first advocates support a more bifurcated approach to building retirement income plans that integrates insurance with investments, providing lifetime income protections to cover spending. With risk pooling through insurance, retirees effectively pay an insurance premium that will provide a benefit to support spending in otherwise costly retirements that could deplete an unprotected investment portfolio. Insurance companies can pool sequence and longevity risks across a large base of retirees, much like a traditional defined-benefit company pension plan or Social Security, allowing for retirement spending that is more closely aligned with averages. When bonds are replaced with insurance-based risk pooling assets, retirees can improve the odds of meeting their spending goals while also supporting more legacy at the end of life, especially in the event of a longer-than-average retirement. We walk through this thought process and logic in steps, investigating three basic ways to fund a retirement spending goal: with bonds, with a diversified investment portfolio, and with risk pooling through annuities and life insurance. We consider the potential role for different types of annuities including simple income annuities, variable annuities, and fixed index annuities. I explain how different annuities work and how readers can evaluate them. We also examine the potential for whole life insurance to contribute to a retirement income plan. When we properly consider the range of risks introduced after retirement, I conclude that the integrated strategies preferred by safety-first advocates support more efficient retirement outcomes. Safety-first retirement planning helps to meet financial goals with less worry. This book explains how to evaluate different insurance options and implement these solutions into an integrated retirement plan.
