This chapter also deals with the three-body forces and the spin dependence of the nuclear potential. The second chapter describes higher order processes involving two or more stages, specifically their intrinsic interest and the effect they can have on the total cross-section. The third chapter examines heavy ion reactions, one of the most prominent growth areas of contemporary nuclear physics. Heavy ion reactions are particularly sensitive to some features of nuclear structure, and thus constitute a powerful tool in nuclear structure research. Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of the second "Rencontres de l'Observatoire" devoted to Physics of Space: Growth Points and Problems, held at the Paris Observatory at Meudon, on January 10-14, 2000. The last quarter of the century has seen the vertiginous growth of space achievements and the exploration of much of the heliosphere with beautifully instrumented space probes. Even though the heliosphere is merely one particular cosmic environment, it is presently the only one accessible to in situ measurements and hence plays a unique role as a natural laboratory for physics and astrophysics. In this spirit, the conference highlighted recent achievements which have changed our view of the physics of space, with emphasis on the bridges between space plasma physics and other disciplines. The contributions include the physics of collisionless plasmas - in particular particle acceleration and dissipation, dusty plasmas, cosmic winds and jets, the environments of planetary bodies and pulsars, novel space detection techniques, and some landmarks of space physics history and possible futures.

Book excerpt: The book aims to quantify and analyze how two water scarce but ideologically different Middle Eastern political economies, Saudi Arabia and Syria, addressed water sector investment between 1980 and 2000. The study examines how narrow-coalitions of decision-makers obsessed by impossible-to-achieve food self-sufficiency goals, lacking environmental consideration and safe political processes contributed to massively waste scarce resources and unsustainable water policies. The book shows that of Saudi Arabia's US$1,034 billion in oil revenues (1974-2001), 48% was spent on security, plus 10% on the ruling family. Nominal Per capita income dropped by 42% (1981-2000). Syria's per capita income dropped (1985-2000) by 17%, to US$1,200. Armaments' consumed (1970-1990) 13% of GDP. Agricultural investment was wasteful. Saudis produced wheat at five times the international price, depleted 300 billion m3 of mainly non-renewable groundwater and degraded aquifers' quality. 53% of Saudis have no municipal water connections. Syria's Government return on agricultural investment in 2000 was estimated at US$150 million loss. Aquifers' quality was degraded, leaving most urban households enduring acute water shortages.
