The potential impact on freshwater and marine fishes is immense, because most fish have no physiological ability to regulate their body temperature. This volume focuses on the effects of temperature at all levels of organization in fish, with particular emphasis on physiological function: cells, epithelia, organ systems, the whole organism, reproduction, behaviour, pollutant interactions, ecology and population dynamics, with each chapter written by experts in the field. Many chapters also speculate on the long-term physiological and ecological implications to fish of a 2-4°C global warming scenario. Researchers and graduate students in the areas of animal physiology and behaviour, environmental toxicology, population ecology and fisheries biology and management will find this volume of particular interest.

Book excerpt: Prediction equations correlating density of fingerling rainbow trout with growth, yield, and food use efficiency indicated that ammonia nitrogen resulting from high fish densities wes responsible for reductions in all three factors. These predictable density-dependent responses present fish-culturists with alternatives of density selection for evaluation and attainment of specific goals. In examples, fish-culturists, by manipulating density, could achieve rapid growth, produce the maximum weight possible, balance yield with cost, optimize fish quality, or combine two or more of these goals.

This book was released on 2004-09-20 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive performance comparison (e.g. 8 000 fish) of different rainbow trout populations was conducted at Doi lnthanon Fisheries Research Unit over two experimental series in order to identify populations which are suitable to establish rainbow trout farming under the specific production conditions of Northern Thailand. This population comparison included survival, growth and reproductive performance. Eyed eggs of seven populations were transferred from the Experimental Trout Station Relliehausen, University of Goettingen, to Doi [nthanon Fisheries Research Unit. Here a special system for population testing in trout was developed. This consisted of separate hatching and rearing of populations till the end of the first feeding stage under two water temperature regimes (11oc, 14°C), further separate rearing of each population up to markable size under ambient water temperatures and common fattening up to pan-size weight.

Described are the requirements and functions of nutrients. The feed formulation for salmonids is described, together with the quality control parameters for the most important ingredients in salmonid diets. All fish feeds must be processed to produce feed particles of appropriate size for fish of different ages and sizes. The digestibility and balance of nutrients assumes greater importance in diets for fish because of the importance of preventing eutrophication and increasing the biological oxygen demand in the fish pond. Guides have been established indicating the amount of feed to give daily to fish of various sizes and water temperatures. Fish are poikilotherms whose body temperature, metabolic rate and feeding activity varies with the ambient water temperature. Feeding rates and growth rates are reduced as the temperature is decreased from 15 to 4 C.

Book excerpt: Effects of dietary nucleotide supplementation on growth and feed efficiency in rainbow trout (initial weight = 25 g/fish) were conducted in a 70-day growth trial. One control diet and two basal diets (25%, 5% and 0% fish meal, respectively) were formulated using high levels of highly digestible plant protein ingredients to meet all the known nutrient requirements of rainbow trout. Two basal diets were supplemented with four increasing levels (0, 8, 16 and 24 ppm, respectively) of nucleotides using a commercial supplement (Laltide®, Lallemand Inc. Qc, Canada). Nucleotide supplementation levels significantly (p

Wacyk and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments were conducted to study specific aspects of fish meal replacement in rainbow trout diets. The first one studied the effects of increasing levels of digestible carbohydrates and showed that rainbow trout is able to maximize protein retention with 15% of CHO inclusion without compromising fish performance. This effect seems to be the result of metabolic adaptations involving changes in transaminase expression as well as in genes associated with REDOX environment in the liver. Higher levels of carbohydrate inclusion (>15%) seems to overcome the ability of the fish to adapt to the diets as reflected by higher levels of expression of REDOX genes, higher whole body fat deposits and lower protein retentions observed for this group of fish. The second experiment, used amino acid balanced diets to study the effects of soy protein isolate (SPI) as the sole protein source in diets supplemented with increasing levels of branched chain amino acids (BCAA). Fish performance was negatively affected by replacing fishmeal (FM) using SPI regardless of the level of BCAA supplementation. The fish receiving the SPI-diets also presented significantly higher levels of indispensable amino acids in plasma and lower levels of hepatic transaminase expression compared to fish fed FM-based diets. The former fish presented significantly higher levels of expression of the REDD-1 gene, which has been associated with a reduced ability to synthesize protein through the TOR cascade in mammals. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was greatly affected by the dietary treatments, showing higher levels of expression in the liver of fish fed the SPI-diets. The BCAA supplementation showed an unexpected effect reducing whole body fat in this study reducing also the levels of lysine and threonine in the plasma of fish regardless of the protein source of the diets.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corn gluten meal (CGM) is a high protein ingredient commonly used in fish feeds. However, studies suggest that diets containing high levels of CGM elicit lower voluntary feed intake, growth and lower efficiency of utilization of limiting amino acid (AA) compared to other protein sources. It has been hypothesized that the AA profile of CGM (low lysine, excess leucine) could be responsible for these effects or protein from CGM could be digested faster than other protein sources, resulting in faster absorption and less efficient utilization of its AAs. A series of studies were conducted to examine the effect of feeding CGM on growth, efficiency of lysine utilization and the dynamics of protein digestion in rainbow trout. Results of growth trial indicated that weight gain, FE and nitrogen retention efficiency were significantly lower in fish fed CGM-based diets compared to those fed WGM based diets. Digestibility trial results revealed lower apparent digestibility of crude protein in CGM-based diets compared to that of WGM-based diets. The efficiency of digestible lysine utilization did not differ between the CGM and WGM-based diets. Serial digesta sampling of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of rainbow trout and blood sampling were carried out to estimate digesta transit time and plasma AA concentrations. Results indicate that CGM-based diets passed through the GI tract four times faster than WGM-based diets. The ratios of plasma leucine to branched-chain amino acids, and leucine to lysine, were generally higher, for fish fed CGM-based diets compared to those fed WGM-based diets. To examine the impact of the excess leucine on growth performance and efficiency of AA utilization, rainbow trout were pair-fed CGM or WGM-based diets formulated to be deficient in lysine and contain adequate and excess leucine levels. Results indicated that excess leucine did not affect growth and efficiency of lysine utilization. The results from this thesis suggest that the lower digestibility of protein and AAs of CGM may in part explain the lower performance of CGM-based diet compared to other protein sources in some studies. Differences in the dynamics of digestion and absorption of AAs and their appearance in the circulation are evident. Therefore, it should be examined further in future studies.
