Also, active parts of semiconductor and other devices and circuits are created, as a rule, in single-crystal bodies. To date, single-crystallinefilms have been mainly epitaxial (or heteroepitaxial); i.e., they have been grown on a single-crystalline substrate, and principal trends, e.g., in the evolution of integrated circuits (lCs), have been based on continuing reduction in feature size and increase in the number of components per chip. However, as the size decreases into the submicrometer range, technological and physical limitations in integrated electronics become more and more severe. It is generally believed that a feature size of about 0.1um will have a crucial character. In other words, the present two-dimensional ICs are anticipated to reach their limit of minimization in the near future, and it is realized that further increase of packing density and/or functions might depend on three-dimensional integration. To solve the problem, techniques for preparation of single-crystalline films on arbitrary (including amorphous) substrates are essential.

This was the first meeting specially focused on the quaternary rare-earth transition-metal borocarbides and nitrides - a new class of magnetic superconductors discovered in 1994. The motivation for organizing this workshop was to bring together scientists (both experimentalists and theoreticians), actively working in this field in different countries, using different methods, to exchange their points of view on the properties ofthese materials and to recognize the directions for future research. Totally 48 participants from 17 countries ofEurope, the United States, BraZil, India, Israel and Japan took part in this meeting. In addition about 15 observers (mainly from Germany) attended. The scientific Programme of the Workshop was composed of 7 sections. The section Introduction and Overview was followed by the Electronic Structure and Properties and Phonon Spectra; Magnetic Properties and CEF Effects; Interplay between Superconductivity and Magnetism; Vortex Lattice; Thin Films; Nature of the Superconducting State in Borocarbides sections. Totally 50 presentations were given (45 ofthem in oral form). Considerable attention was devoted to the characterization of the particular place of borocarbides amongst the other magnetic and superconducting systems and, especially, magnetic superconductors.

Book excerpt: The work in the past year has primarily involved three areas of magnetic thin films: amorphous rare earth-transition metal alloys, epitaxial COPt3 thin films, and exchange coupled antiferromagnetic insulators. In the amorphous alloys, the authors have focused on understanding the cause and the effect of the growth-surface-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using the results of previous work, they are able to control this anisotropy quite precisely. This anisotropy is predicted to have dramatic and as-yet unobserved effects on the underlying nature of the magnetism. The work on the epitaxial Co-Pt alloys was originally undertaken as a comparison study to the amorphous alloys. The authors have discovered that these alloys exhibit a remarkable new phenomena; a surface-induced miscibility gap in a material which is believed to be completely miscible in the bulk. This miscibility gap is 100% correlated with the perpendicular anisotropy, although the connection is not yet clear, and is presumably linked to a magnetic energy of mixing which tends to drive a material towards clustering. The problem of exchange coupling in multilayers impacts many of the current research areas in magnetism. NiO/CoO multilayers can be prepared with coherent interfaces. The specific heat shows unambiguously the ordering of the spins in the layers. The results show clearly the transition from a single transition temperature to two distinct transitions with increasing thickness of the individual layers. From this data, the authors are able to determine the interface magnetic exchange coupling constant and the effect on the transition temperature of finite layer thickness.

Book excerpt: Thin films are defined by an extremely high ratio of the in-plane dimensions to the thickness, resulting in very high surface-to-volume ratios. For this reason, the surface characteristics of a film play an important role in the properties of the film as a whole. This research focused on the connections between the properties and the surface state of metallic thin films. High resolution in-situ stress measurements were made during the ultra-high vacuum evaporative deposition of polycrystalline Cu films and homoepitaxial (111)-oriented Cu and Ag films. The measurements were enabled through the development of two high resolution in-situ stress monitoring devices that minimized sample placement and vibrational error through compact and monolithic ultra-high vacuum compatible designs. These devices allowed in-situ stress measurements with unprecedented sensitivities while the device electronics enabled the study of systems in real-time with high data acquisition rates. Measurements were made during growth and interruptions of growth as the films formed and thickened. In the earliest stages of a growth cycle, when only a small fraction of a monolayer is deposited, the elastic component of the adatom-surface interaction dominates the stress evolution. The early stage observations are analyzed through a first- order expansion of the thermodynamic surface stress which allows for direct extraction and measurement of the force-dipole associated with the adatom-surface interaction.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents an experimental study of ordering phenomena in rare-earth nickelate-based heterostructures by means of inelastic Raman light scattering and elastic resonant x-ray scattering (RXS). Further, it demonstrates that the amplitude ratio of magnetic moments at neighboring nickel sites can be accurately determined by RXS in combination with a correlated double cluster model, and controlled experimentally through structural pinning of the oxygen positions in the crystal lattice. The two key outcomes of the thesis are: (a) demonstrating full control over the charge/bond and spin order parameters in specifically designed praseodymium nickelate heterostructures and observation of a novel spin density wave phase in absence of the charge/bond order parameter, which confirms theoretical predictions of a spin density wave phase driven by spatial confinement of the conduction electrons; and (b) assessing the thickness-induced crossover between collinear and non-collinear spin structures in neodymium nickelate slabs, which is correctly predicted by drawing on density functional theory.
