Book Synopsis Non-Classical Crystallization of Thin Films and Nanostructures in CVD and PVD Processes by : Nong Moon Hwang
Download or read book Non-Classical Crystallization of Thin Films and Nanostructures in CVD and PVD Processes written by Nong Moon Hwang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to a recently-developed approach to the growth mechanism of thin films and nanostructures via chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Starting from the underlying principles of the low pressure synthesis of diamond films, it is shown that diamond growth occurs not by individual atoms but by charged nanoparticles. This newly-discovered growth mechanism turns out to be general to many CVD and some physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes. This non-classical crystallization is a new paradigm of crystal growth, with active research taking place on growth in solution, especially in biomineralization processes. Established understanding of the growth of thin films and nanostructures is based around processes involving individual atoms or molecules. According to the author’s research over the last two decades, however, the generation of charged gas phase nuclei is shown to be the rule rather than the exception in the CVD process, and charged gas phase nuclei are actively involved in the growth of films or nanostructures. This new understanding is called the theory of charged nanoparticles (TCN). This book describes how the non-classical crystallization mechanism can be applied to the growth of thin films and nanostructures in gas phase synthesis. Based on the author’s graduate lecture course, the book is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in the field of thin film and nanostructure growth or crystal growth. It is hoped that a new understanding of the growth processes of thin films and nanostructures will reduce trial-and-error in research and in industrial fabrication processes.

Book Synopsis Thin Film Growth Techniques for Low-Dimensional Structures by : R.F.C. Farrow

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work represents the account of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Thin Film Growth Techniques for Low Dimensional Structures", held at the University of Sussex, Brighton, England from 15-19 Sept. 1986. The objective of the workshop was to review the problems of the growth and characterisation of thin semiconductor and metal layers. Recent advances in deposition techniques have made it possible to design new material which is based on ultra-thin layers and this is now posing challenges for scientists, technologists and engineers in the assessment and utilisation of such new material. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has become well established as a method for growing thin single crystal layers of semiconductors. Until recently, MBE was confined to the growth of III-V compounds and alloys, but now it is being used for group IV semiconductors and II-VI compounds. Examples of such work are given in this volume. MBE has one major advantage over other crystal growth techniques in that the structure of the growing layer can be continuously monitored using reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). This technique has offered a rare bonus in that the time dependent intensity variations of RHEED can be used to determine growth rates and alloy composition rather precisely. Indeed, a great deal of new information about the kinetics of crystal growth from the vapour phase is beginning to emerge.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms of Surface and Microstructure Evolution in Deposited Films and Film Structures: by : John Sanchez, Jr
Download or read book Mechanisms of Surface and Microstructure Evolution in Deposited Films and Film Structures: written by John Sanchez, Jr and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide variety of materials systems and deposition strategies have been developed to produce epitaxial and polycrystalline thin films. In particular, controlling the morphology and microstructure of metal films at the nanometer and/or micron scale has become crucial for applications such as giant magnetoresistive devices, contacts and diffusion barriers in integrated circuits and photovoltaics, and multilayer X-ray mirrors. This book, first published in 2001, focuses on the interactions between different mechanisms of microstructure evolution and film-growth conditions. Two sections of the volume, including a joint effort with Symposium R, Morphology and Dynamics of Crystal Surfaces in Molecular and Colloid Systems, highlight the fundamental mechanisms of epitaxial growth. Additional topics include: multilayers - stress in thin films; early stages of film growth - mechanical properties; texture in polycrystalline films; grain growth - barrier layers; and silicides and organic thin films - pulsed laser deposition.
Book Synopsis Epitaxial Oxide Thin Films II: Volume 401 by : James S. Speck
Download or read book Epitaxial Oxide Thin Films II: Volume 401 written by James S. Speck and published by . This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding and control of epitaxial oxide heterostructures has progressed along multiple frontiers including magnetic, dielectric, ferroelectric, and superconducting oxide materials. This has resulted in both independent rediscovery and the successful borrowing of ideas from ceramic science, solid-state physics, and semiconductor epitaxy. A new field of materials science has emerged which aims at the use of the intrinsic properties of various oxide materials in single-crystal thin-film form. Exploiting the potential of these materials, however, will only be possible if many fundamental and engineering questions can be answered. This book represents continued progress toward fulfilling that promise. Technical information on epitaxial oxide thin films from industry, academia and government laboratories is presented. Topics include: dielectrics; ferroelectrics; optics; superconductors; magnetics; magnetoresistance.
