Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major conclusions reached in my study are : 1. Through increased daily mean temperature, delayed planting affects the rate of accumulation of growing degree days. This results in changes in both rate of development and duration of growth of oat plants, and influences plant morphological and yield component characteristics. 2. Although changes in rate of development and duration of growth influence plant morphological characteristics and yeild component traits, no direct association occurs between yield and changes in either plant morphological characteristics or yield component traits caused by rate and duration changes. Neither does a direct association occur between yield and the accumulation of growing degree days. 3. The growing degree day method of accumulated thermal units more adequately predicts the rate of development and duration of growth in oats then does number of days. 4. Environmental factors other than temperature place serious limitations on the accuracy of the growing degree day method for predicting growth and development, and incorporation of these factors into growing degree day calculation might improve its predictive value. 5. The use of growing degree days for classifying oat cultivars into maturity groups has potential value; however, additional testing is recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we unlock resilience to climate stress by better understanding linkages between the environment and biological systems? Agroclimatology allows us to explore how different processes determine plant response to climate and how climate drives the distribution of crops and their productivity. Editors Jerry L. Hatfield, Mannava V.K. Sivakumar, and John H. Prueger have taken a comprehensive view of agroclimatology to assist and challenge researchers in this important area of study. Major themes include: principles of energy exchange and climatology, understanding climate change and agriculture, linkages of specific biological systems to climatology, the context of pests and diseases, methods of agroclimatology, and the application of agroclimatic principles to problem-solving in agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop Physiology: Case Histories of Major Crops updates the physiology of broad-acre crops with a focus on the genetic, environmental and management drivers of development, capture and efficiency in the use of radiation, water and nutrients, the formation of yield and aspects of quality. These physiological process are presented in a double context of challenges and solutions. The challenges to increase plant-based food, fodder, fiber and energy against the backdrop of population increase, climate change, dietary choices and declining public funding for research and development in agriculture are unprecedented and urgent. The proximal technological solutions to these challenges are genetic improvement and agronomy. Hence, the premise of the book is that crop physiology is most valuable when it engages meaningfully with breeding and agronomy. With contributions from 92 leading scientists from around the world, each chapter deals with a crop: maize, rice, wheat, barley, sorghum and oat; quinoa; soybean, field pea, chickpea, peanut, common bean, lentil, lupin and faba bean; sunflower and canola; potato, cassava, sugar beet and sugarcane; and cotton. A crop-based approach to crop physiology in a G x E x M context Captures the perspectives of global experts on 22 crops

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyamines are small aliphatic polycations which have been involved in key stress and developmental processes in plants. In the recent years, compelling genetic and molecular evidences point to polyamines as essential metabolites required for resistance to drought, freezing, salinity, oxidative stress among other type of abiotic and biotic stresses. In addition to their role as stress-protective compounds, polyamines participate in key developmental processes mediated by specific signaling pathways or in cross-regulation with other plant hormones. Our Research Topic aims to integrate the multiple stress and developmental regulatory functions of polyamines in plants under a genetic, molecular and evolutionary perspective with special focus on signaling networks, mechanisms of action and metabolism regulation.

Book excerpt: Medicinal Plant Responses to Stressful Conditions discusses the effects of multiple biotic and abiotic stressors on medicinal plants. It features information on biochemical, molecular and physiological strategies used to mitigate or alleviate detrimental effects of biotic and abiotic stressors. The book contains chapters featuring medicinal plants of importance covering subjects including genomics, functional genomics, metabolomics, phenomics, proteomics and transcriptomics under biotic and abiotic stress of medicinal plants and their molecular responses. It suggests exogenous application of different types of stimulants to enhance medicinal plant production in such conditions. Features: Details all aspects of biotic and abiotic stressors in various important medicinal plant species. Chapters cover evidence-based approaches in the diagnosis and management of medicinal plants under stressful conditions. Includes information on ways to mitigate effects from biotic stress (diseases and pests) or abiotic stress (high salinity, drought, temperature extremes, waterlogging, wind, high light intensity, UV radiation, heavy metals and mineral deficiencies). A volume in the Exploring Medicinal Plants series, this book is an essential resource for plant scientists, botanists, environmental scientists and anyone with an interest in herbal medicine.
