Book excerpt: If you are serious about being a disciple of Jesus Christ—really, truly serious—a discipleship group can help you achieve that goal. Jesus established this model for us by forming and leading the first discipleship group—and it worked. The men who emerged from that group took the gospel to the world and ultimately laid down their lives for Christ. Discipleship groups can create an atmosphere for fellowship, encouragement, and accountability—building an environment where God can work. In Growing Up: How to Be a Disciple Who Makes Disciples, Robby Gallaty presents a practical, easy-to-implement system for growing in one's faith. This guide offers a manual for making disciples, addressing the what, why, where, and how of discipleship. D-Groups, as Gallaty calls them, can teach you and others how to grow your relationship with God, how to defend your faith, and how to guide others in their relationships with God. Growing Up provides you with an interactive manual and resource for creating and working with discipleship groups, allowing you to gain positive information both for yourself and for others as you learn how to help others become better disciples for Christ.

Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning memoir about coming of age in America between the world wars: “So warm, so likable and so disarmingly funny” (The New York Times). One of the New York Times’ “50 Best Memoirs of the Past 50 Years” Ranging from the backwoods of Virginia to a New Jersey commuter town to the city of Baltimore, this remarkable memoir recounts Russell Baker’s experience of growing up in pre–World War II America, before he went on to a celebrated career in journalism. With poignant, humorous tales of powerful love, awkward sex, and courage in the face of adversity, Baker reveals how he helped his mother and family through the Great Depression by delivering papers and hustling subscriptions to the Saturday Evening Post—a job which introduced him to bullies, mentors, and heroes who endured this national disaster with hard work and good cheer. Called “a treasure” by Anne Tyler and “a blessing” by Time magazine, this autobiography is a modern-day classic—“a wondrous book [with scenes] as funny and touching as Mark Twain’s” (Los Angeles Times Book Review). “In lovely, haunting prose, he has told a story that is deeply in the American grain.” —The Washington Post Book World “A terrific book.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is part of a national campaign for music education that aims to focus the nation's attention on the pressing need to include music and the other arts at the center of the school curriculum. The credo of this campaign is, "Just as there can be no music without learning, no education is complete without music." The meaning of this credo is spelled out in this report through a four-part argument. In chapter 1, "Our Culture Is Dying," the contention is made that through inattention to music and the other arts in schools, the nation is dehumanizing its own people--and particularly the children--not by design but by default. It is argued that music has intrinsic value for the learner, and that a knowledge of music is essential to an educated human being. In chapter 2,"Education Without Music," evidence is explored that music education is being pushed to the periphery in schools. Chapter 3, "Education With Music," underscores two areas of interest: first, the new, pathbreaking areas of research on the nature of intelligence and brain function that are linked to music; and second, the significant contributions that music education can make to all of education beyond its intrinsic value. Finally, in chapter 4, "Making It Happen: Mounting a National Effort," there is discussion of ways of putting the credo to work, including linking the benefits of music education to a national advocacy effort to bring music and the other arts to their basic role in U.S. education. Two appendices are included: list of witnesses before the National Commission on Music Education, and a list of endorsing and supporting organizations. (DB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author Kristie Sullivan teamed up with her teenage kids, Grace and Jonathan, to deliver the ultimate keto family cookbook, Growing Up Keto. This inspiring book stems from Kristie’s personal struggles with growing up obese and then finally finding the right nutritional path for herself and, eventually, her family. The keto lifestyle proved to be the right fit for Kristie, who experienced dramatic weight loss and optimized health. Above and beyond being a success story, Kristie is a busy working mom who is devoted to the health of her two children. When she saw her own daughter begin to struggle with weight just as she had as a child, Kristie committed to supporting her by providing delicious low-carb options, focusing on health instead of weight, and setting an example. With her mother’s guidance, Grace made the choice to adopt a keto lifestyle herself, and later on, Jonathan did as well. After years of success, the Sullivan family brings you a first-of-its-kind cookbook dedicated to young adults, teens, kids, and—you guessed it—their parents! Growing Up Keto combines the Sullivans’ heartwarming family narrative with a practical, safe, and kid-friendly approach to adopting a low-carb, ketogenic lifestyle. The recipes featured in the book were created with the health needs and tastes of kids and teens in mind. Some are so simple that youngsters can take over in the kitchen with little or no help from Mom or Dad. There are also recipes for celebrations with extended family and friends and meals that parents and kids can cook together, making even simple weeknight dinners more fun. Kristie also includes useful tools and information for parents of kids who eat keto, such as tips and tricks for surviving sleepovers, camp, and other social activities that involve food as well as a guide to helping kids make independent and informed choices for a lifetime of healthy eating. Growing Up Keto is complete with breakfasts, including quick morning meals; lunches, including handy tips on packing for school and overnight trips; main dishes, including celebratory meals; and, of course, classic desserts that kids love. With plenty of options for a wide range of palates, Kristie, Grace, and Jonathan leave nothing out. Kids and adults alike will feel satisfied, happy, and healthy! Sample recipes include: Sheet Pan Blueberry Pancakes Three Amigos Dip Roasted Marinated Cheese Pizza Soup Sheet Pan Fajitas Marinated Beef Kabobs Cashew Chicken Double-Stuffed Chocolate Waffle Dessert Pumpkin Spice Roll and many more!

Book excerpt: Eleanor Wachtel’s award-winning CBC Radio programme Writers & Company has set the gold standard for intelligent, insightful, riveting interviews. To mark the dawn of the new millennium, Wachtel talked to some of the most inspiring and influential thinkers of our time -- people who have forever changed their area of specialty and influenced the world around them. As she writes in her introduction, "I wanted to interview people who had shaped the last century and whose influence would continue into the next...I hoped to have wide-ranging conversations with some of the most inspiring men and women of our time, people who’ve made a difference." And what an outstanding list of people she met: Jonathan Miller — internationally acclaimed theatre and opera director, writer, member of Beyond the Fringe comedy troupe Jane Goodall — primatologist and scientist best known for her work with chimpanzees Bernardo Bertolucci — director whose films including the Oscar-winning The Last Emperor and Last Tango in Paris George Steiner — teacher, literary critic and theorist Desmond Tutu — former Archbishop of South Africa and co-chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Susan Sontag — writer of novels, essays, works of non-fiction, and plays. In America won the National Book Award in 2000. Amartya Sen — Nobel Prize winner in Economics (1998) Gloria Steinem — feminist and activist, author whose 1983 collection of essays is titled Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions Jared Diamond — teacher, Pulitzer Prize winner for Guns, Germs and Steel Oliver Sacks — neurologist, best known for his books Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat Jane Jacobs — internationally respected commentator on city design and planning Umberto Eco — "the Pavarotti of Semiotics" and writer of the international bestseller The Name of the Rose Mary Douglas — anthropologist, author of the classic Purity and Danger (1966) Noam Chomsky — world-famous linguist and dissident intellectual Arthur C. Clarke — writer, best known for his science fiction masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey Harold Bloom — "one of the world’s most influential critic-scholar-theorists" according to The New York Times Each interview enlightens not only the subject’s master area but how we see the world and our role in it. Not content to sit back on their intellectual laurels, Wachtel’s subjects seem driven to influence their world and encourage us to do likewise. As Jane Goodall says, "The nicest thing I’m told after lectures is that I make people realize that their lives have more value. And thousands of children from all over the world have said, ‘You taught me that because you did it, I can do it too.’ That’s amazing. That makes it all—all this effort—really worthwhile." A book for Eleanor Wachtel’s many devotees and for anyone who has a curiosity about the fascinating intersection of people and ideas, Original Minds is a captivating read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing Up Human reveals how our evolutionary history has shaped a phenomenon experienced by all readers – childhood. Tracking our evolutionary history, anthropological science has begun to unravel one feature that sets us apart from the many animals that came before us – our uniquely long childhoods. Growing Up Human looks at how we have diverged from our roots to stay 'forever young' and how the evolution of childhood is a critical part of the human story. Beginning with the ways animals invest in their offspring, anthropologist Brenna Hassett moves through the steps of making a baby, from pair-bonding to hidden ovulation, points where our species has repeatedly stepped off the standard primate path. From the mystery of monogamy to the minefield of modern parenting advice, Hassett explains how differences between humans and our closest cousins have led to our messy mating systems, dangerous pregnancies, and difficult births, and what these tell us about our babies we are trying to build. Using observations of our closest primate relatives, archaeological relics, and the bones and teeth of our ancestors, Growing Up Human explores the evolution of our childhood right down the fossil record. In our species, investment doesn't stop at birth, and examining every aspect of our care and feeding, from the chemical composition of our milk to formal education, reveals what we have evolved our weird and wonderful childhoods for.
