Whether they lived in the big city" of Burlington or in Mebane and other small textile towns, children of the era have warm memories of the area. Younger kids rode the Dentzel Carousel at Burlington City Park and traded comic books, while teenagers downed hot dogs at Betty's Snack Shack and snuggled with dates at the East 70 Drive-In Theatre. In the hot summer evenings before widespread air conditioning, families gathered on front porches to enjoy cool breezes and discuss the day's events. Join author and Alamance County native J. Ronald Oakley for a stroll down Main Street."

Book excerpt: This book is my attempt to compile as much as I can into a family history story for his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and anyone else who chances to read this. To describe Ernest in one word, it could only be earnest. He was a serious, determined, intense, committed, sincere, devout, sober, diligent, heartfelt manall synonyms to the word earnest. He was all of those and a little more. One time, Floyd said to me that he didnt know what happened to Ernest to make him like he was. So, Floyd, these many years later, I think the answer may be that Ernest just earnestly lived up to his name. He was a good man.

Book excerpt: "This is my story. It's the unvarnished truth about my cultural heritage and it starts in the countryside of southeastern North Carolina. My parents and my entire family have always found things to laugh about in life. When I married my husband, we spent our first 15 months together in Casablanca, which proved a wonderful opportunity to explore another culture." Faye Lanier Gardner grew up on a small farm in Pender County, North Carolina, about 30 miles from the well-known beaches. This book is about her many unusual experiences growing up. As a very young child, she had typhoid fever, and before school age, she also had osteomyelitis, a bone infection of the left arm, which was very painful and debilitating. But this pain became her gain. As a high school senior, she was eligible for a full college scholarship because of her "handicap." Faye met her husband-to-be during her first month of college. They married almost four years later. She received her BS in business education and English education from East Carolina University, and her M.Ed. in occupational education from North Carolina State University, Raleigh. She taught at Campbell University, Forsyth County Schools, Hardbarger Business College, and Wake County Public Schools. She also performed secretarial duties on Nouasseur Air Depot near Casablanca, North Africa, and at a law office in Winston Salem.

Book excerpt: Born on January 5, 1907, Zetta Hamby spent much of her life in the northwestern mountains of North Carolina, keenly watching the changes in her community of Grassy Creek and in the world. Families, homes, weddings and funerals, politics, health, world war, race relations, the telephone--those are among the topics touched on in this firsthand look at rural Appalachia in the early decades of the present century. Sometimes poignant, often humorous, and surely authentic, these stories are yet another reminder of recent history that is all too quickly being lost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Baby Boomer" author and newspaper publisher Philip Burrow takes a heartfelt, and sometimes painful, nostalgic look at being raised in the 50's by his grandparents at a small, backwoods farm in rural North Carolina. In this first-person account, he also delves into the life and family pottery business of his great-grandfather, William Henry Chriscoe, one of the early potters of the modern day Pottery Mecca of Seagrove, NC. Many nostalgic photos of the Chriscoe family are included, some dating back to the early 1900's. You will enjoy this book if: - You fondly remember your aging grandparents, great-uncles, and great-aunts - You were raised by grandparents or someone other than your parents - You like reading of a time when life was slower - You grew up on a small farm - You grew up in the country - You like reading about the "Good old days" - You suffered abuse as a child - You are a parent considering divorce - You are interested in living off the land - You are an "Old-time" Southerner - You appreciate the "Self-sufficiency" lifestyle - You are interested in early North Carolina pottery - You've never shucked a bushel of corn - You've never raised chickens - You've never castrated a pig - You've never sat on an outdoor privy seat and gotten a cold butt in freezing weather - You've never had the run of a home and farm with goats, mules, cows, dogs, cats, kids, and other grand-kids -- a trusting home where relatives and farm neighbors popped in unannounced almost daily by just opening a generally unlocked door. Being raised by grandparents of another generation was an experience to never be forgotten, according to the author. But sometimes being shuffled back and forth between a mother and grandparents was painful and fraught with mixed emotions and feelings. Nevertheless, to have had "a foot in two generations," was a privilege today savored by the author.

Book excerpt: In 1837, Edwin M. Holt -- a thirty-year-old, fourth-generation North Carolinian -- established a small spinning mill on his family's land along the Haw River in rural Orange County. By his death in 1884, Holt's small spinning mill had come to dominate the textile industry in Alamance County -- which divided from Orange County in 1849 -- and gave the area an industrial legacy that would last for generations. Covering the Holt dynasty from the founding of the Alamance Factory in 1837 to the strike of 1900 that eventually shut down most of the family's mills, Alamance provides an excellent social history of southern industrial development. Bess Beatty intersperses chapters on the rise of the Holts with profiles on their workers to provide a thorough explanation of how industrialization affected sectional, familial, racial, and gender relations across class lines. Focusing on class formation and conflict, she rejects the long-held view that southern owners were paternalistic and that workers were docile and deferential, instead arguing that owners and workers had a contentious class-driven relationship, with both sides striving to maximize their economic success. Moreover, while Beatty shows that slavery, secession, war, defeat, and postbellum race relations influenced the development of southern industry, she maintains that industrialization in the South was not fundamentally different from that in other regions of the country. Alamance's story of southern industrial power makes an outstanding contribution to the history of southern communities and will fascinate those interested in the region, as well as students of social, business, and labor history.

Book excerpt: Growing up in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina in the 50''s was quite a challenge at times, Growing enough food to feed the family and farm animals was hard work, yet rewarding. We not only grew enough food to feed us during the summer, but had to “put up” enough to get us through the long cold winter. We made some of our clothes as well as the mops and brooms used for house cleaning. Public jobs were scarce so other means of making a few dollars ranged from cutting pulp wood to catching spring lizards. Times were tough but love for each other and faith in God “saw us through”.
