Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture dominates the rural economy of Papua New Guinea (PNG). More than five million rural dwellers (80% of the population) earn a living from subsistence agriculture and selling crops in domestic and international markets. Many aspects of agriculture in PNG are described in this data-rich book. Topics include agricultural environments in which crops are grown; production of food crops, cash crops and animals; land use; soils; demography; migration; the macro-economic environment; gender issues; governance of agricultural institutions; and transport. The history of agriculture over the 50 000 years that PNG has been occupied by humans is summarised. Much of the information presented is not readily available within PNG. The book contains results of many new analyses, including a food budget for the entire nation. The text is supported by 165 tables and 215 maps and figures.

After a survey of ethnographic studies on childhood, the book zooms in on indigenous ideas of conception and birth-giving, the children’s early development, their integration into playgroups, their games and their education within their `own little community’ until they reach the age of seven years. During this time children enjoy much autonomy and independence. Attempts of parental education are confined to a minimum. However, parents use subtle means to raise their children. Educational ideologies are manifest in narratives and in speeches addressed to children. They provide guidelines for their integration into the Trobrianders’ “balanced society” which is characterized by cooperation and competition. It does not allow individual accumulation of wealth – surplus property gained has to be redistributed – but it values the fame acquired by individuals in competitive rituals. Fame is not regarded as threatening the balance of their society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting handbook is devoted solely to the effects of environmental variables on the physiology of the world's major fruit and nut crops. Its cosmopolitan scope includes chapters on tropical and sub-tropical species written by scientists from several continents. The influence of environmental factors, such as irradiance, temperature, water and salinity on plant physiology and on vegetative and reproductive growth, is comprehensively discussed for each crop. In addition to being a thorough textbook, the organization of this volume makes it an excellent reference tool. Each chapter focuses on a single crop, or a group of genetically or horticulturally related crop, and is appropriately divided into subsections that address individual environmental factors. Some chapters emphasize whole-plant physiology and plant growth and development, while other chapters feature theoretical aspects of plant physiology. Several chapters provide botanical background discussions to enhance understanding of the crop's response to its environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A herbaceous, perennial and heliophile plant, and a member of the Bromeliaceae family, the pineapple has significant nutritional, commercial and industrial potential. Mainly grown for its fruit, the pineapple can be consumed fresh, dried or processed into preserves, drinks or vinegar. This manual on the production and processing of pineapples is intended for small and medium sized pineapple producers and processors, as well as extension agents in this subsector. While taking account of the extensive agricultural, pedological and climatic diversity of the world’s pineapple-growing regions, it is important to give a broad outline of the traditional pineapple production process, at the same time recommending some pesticides and fertilisers that can be used in the production process.
