Book Synopsis Grow and Hide by : Colleen M. Grogan
Download or read book Grow and Hide written by Colleen M. Grogan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of the American health care state that reveals the public has been intentionally misled about the true role of government. The US government has always invested federal, state and local dollars in public health protection and prevention. Despite this public funding, however, Americans typically believe the current system is predominantly comprised of private actors with little government interference. In Grow & Hide, Colleen M. Grogan details the history of the American health care state and argues that the public has been intentionally misled about the true role of government. The US created a publicly financed system while framing it as the opposite in what Grogan terms the "grow-and-hide regime." Today, the state's role is larger than ever, yet it remains largely hidden because stakeholders-namely, private actors and their allies in government-have repeatedly, and successfully, presented the illusion of minimal government involvement. The consequences of this narrative are scarce accountability and a highly unequal distribution of benefits. In the wake of a pandemic that has killed over one million Americans--with the highest death rates among minorities and lower-income people--the time has come for an honest discussion about the health care system. As Grogan reveals, America has never had a system that resembles a competitive, free-market model. Given how much the government already invests in the health care system, means how these funds are distributed and administered are fundamental political questions for the American public, not questions that should be decided by the private sector. If we want to fix care in America, we need to reimagine the way it is organized, prioritized, funded, and, perhaps most importantly, discussed. Grow & Hide is an important contribution to this reimagining.

Book Synopsis Growing a Feast: The Chronicle of a Farm-to-Table Meal by : Kurt Timmermeister
Download or read book Growing a Feast: The Chronicle of a Farm-to-Table Meal written by Kurt Timmermeister and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a feast two years in the making, from the farmer who harvested the vegetables, raised the animals, and prepared the meal. In Growing a Farmer, Kurt Timmermeister recounted the toil and joy of wrestling an empty plot of land on Vashon Island, Washington, into a dairy farm. Now he tells the story of a feast made from only what the farm provides. But the story of the meal begins two years earlier with the birth of a calf, Alice. When she is grown, Alice will produce the cream to be churned into butter, made into sauce Béarnaise, and served alongside poached eggs and kale gathered the morning of the feast. Along the way we meet Leda, who trades onion seedlings for Kurt’s cheese; Michiko, who forages the white chanterelles for the antipasti course; and Bill, whose large, thin-skinned tomatoes will form the basis of the tomato upside-down cake. Rich in detail, resonant in story, Growing a Feast depicts the effort behind every meal, the farm that comes before every table.
Download or read book Growing Room written by Tamera Rehnborg and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tamera Rehnborg learned about Gods grace the hard way. For years she lived in hard, barren places. Eventually her world spiraled down to a small chamber. She lost her voice, her identity, and her vision. In 2007, a life change forced her to call out to God to make room for her. Growing Room is the chronicling of her move out of those tight places. Slowly and incrementally, God used commonplace life experiences to introduce her to his tenacious gracea grace she had never known. He taught her to seek and to find him in the most obscure and ordinary of places. God revealed himself through the tight places of biblical personages such as Hagar, Gomer, Jacob, Peter, and Mary, but most often he engaged Tamera through her daily routine of living. Through these experiences, she learned to abide in the parameters of his grace. Growing Room is the story of Gods unfolding revelation in every situationholy to the profane, humorous to the serious, and the mundane to the extraordinaryfor us to know him. Tamera wants others who are in tight places to know that the relentless love of God will make room for them to grow into his wholeness and perfection. His beautiful, fierce grace will provide the growing room we need to stretch out into his spacious place.
