Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers with a basic graduate level background in algebra, these ten articles provide a readable introduction to three major interrelated subjects of noncommutative algebra. The theme is the interplay between group theory and ring theory, dealing specifically with group rings, crossed products, and the Galois theory of rings. The author has carefully included most definitions, to keep the required background minimal. Furthermore, each article contains a selection of results on the given topic, a limited number of proofs or sketches, and at least a few open problems.

Book excerpt: The algebraic study of group rings was initiated in 1949 by I. Kaplansky. The subject has been pursued by a small but growing number of researchers, and has reached a point in its development where a coherent account of the basic results is needed. That is the goal of this text. The topics covered are selective, with material balanced between ring theory and group theory, and a basic one year course in algebra should provide sufficient background for readers.

The subject involves the intersection of two essentially different disciplines, group theory and ring theory. The Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society hailed this treatment as 'a majestic account,' proclaiming it "encyclopedic and lucid." 1985 edition"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 15 years, the theory of crossed products has enjoyed a period of vigorous development. The foundations have been strengthened and reorganized from new points of view, especially from the viewpoint of graded rings. The purpose of this monograph is to give, in a self-contained manner, an up-to-date account of various aspects of this development, in an effort to convey a comprehensive picture of the current state of the subject. It is assumed that the reader has had the equivalent of a standard first-year graduate course, thus familiarity with basic ring-theoretic and group-theoretic concepts and an understanding of elementary properties of modules, tensor products and fields. A chapter on algebraic preliminaries is included, which briefly surveys topics required later in the book.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on talks given at the Workshop on Categorical Structures for Descent and Galois Theory, Hopf Algebras, and Semiabelian Categories held at The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Toronto, ON, Canada). The meeting brought together researchers working in these interrelated areas. This collection of survey and research papers gives an up-to-date account of the many current connections among Galois theories, Hopf algebras, and semiabeliancategories. The book features articles by leading researchers on a wide range of themes, specifically, abstract Galois theory, Hopf algebras, and categorical structures, in particular quantum categories and higher-dimensional structures. Articles are suitable for graduate students and researchers, specifically those interested in Galois theory and Hopf algebras and their categorical unification.

Book excerpt: This book presents the expanded notes from ten lectures given by the author at the NSF/CBMS conference held at California State University (Bakersfield). The author describes what he calls single orbit dynamics, which is an approach to the analysis of dynamical systems via the study of single orbits, rather than the study of a system as a whole. He presents single orbit interpretations of several areas of topological dynamics and ergodic theory and some new applications of dynamics to graph theory. In the concluding lectures, single orbit approaches to generalizations of the Shannon-Breiman-McMillan theorem and related problems of compression and universal coding are presented. Complete proofs and illuminating discussions are included and references for further study are given. Some of the material appears here for the first time in print.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference lectures presented by Miwa in June 1993, this book surveys recent developments in the interplay between solvable lattice models in statistical mechanics and representation theory of quantum affine algebras. Because results in this subject were scattered in the literature, this book fills the need for a systematic account, focusing attention on fundamentals without assuming prior knowledge about lattice models or representation theory. After a brief account of basic principles in statistical mechanics, the authors discuss the standard subjects concerning solvable lattice models in statistical mechanics, the main examples being the spin 1/2 XXZ chain and the six-vertex model. The book goes on to introduce the main objects of study, the corner transfer matrices and the vertex operators, and discusses some of their aspects from the viewpoint of physics. Once the physical motivations are in place, the authors return to the mathematics, covering the Frenkel-Jing bosonization of a certain module, formulas for the vertex operators using bosons, the role of representation theory, and correlation functions and form factors. The limit of the XXX model is briefly discussed, and the book closes with a discussion of other types of models and related works.

Montgomery at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held at Kansas State University in May 1990. The book focuses on important topics in analytic number theory that involve ideas from harmonic analysis. One particularly valuable aspect of the book is that it collects material that was either unpublished or that had appeared only in the research literature. The book should be a useful resource for harmonic analysts interested in moving into research in analytic number theory. In addition, it is suitable as a textbook in an advanced graduate topics course in number theory.
