Book excerpt: This report summarizes the groundfish catch from the Prince William Sound bottom trawl survey conducted from 1991 to 2015. Although the purpose of the trawl survey is to assess Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi abundance, many groundfish species are also captured, thus providing opportunities to examine population and biological trends over the time series. The catch composition for all species is first characterized at the taxonomic class level and then for fish species at the family level. Time series are then presented for biomass estimates, biological data trends, and spatial trends in CPUE for select commercial and recreationally harvested groundfish species, including rougheye and blackspotted rockfish Sebastes aleutianus and S. melanostictus, Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus, walleye pollock G. chalcogrammus, sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria, longnose skate Raja rhina, big skate Beringraja binoculata, and Bering skate Bathyraja interrupta. Relatively precise biomass estimates were obtained for most species, although precision was more variable for Pacific cod and sablefish. Following a decline in the early 1990s, rougheye/blackspotted rockfish biomass has remained relatively stable since 1997, fluctuating at or below the long-term average, whereas walleye pollock displayed a more pronounced cyclic trend. Biomass estimates for all skate species have increased since 2007. Biomass estimates were also contrasted with those from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Gulf of Alaska bottom trawl survey. Similarities in relative biomass trends between Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska were evident for all species at varying degrees.

These surveys extend the series of surveys, previously conducted every 3 years between 1984 and 1999, which constitute the time series used in stock assessments of Gulf of Alaska groundfish resources. The survey area covered the continental shelf and upper continental slope to 500 m in the Gulf of Alaska from Islands of Four Mountains (170° W long.) to the east end of Prince William Sound (132° 40' W long.). The survey was conducted aboard three chartered commercial trawlers, and the FV Morning Star and the FV Vesteraalen. Trawl haul samples were collected successfully at 489 survey stations using standard RACE Division Poly Nor'Eastern high-opening bottom trawl nets with rubber bobbin roller gear. The primary survey objectives were to define the distribution and estimate the relative abundance of the principal groundfish within the survey area and to collect data to estimate biological parameters useful to groundfish researchers and managers including age, growth, length-weight relationships, feeding habits, and size, sex, and age composition. The survey also collected ancillary data requested by other research groups. More than 138 fish and 304 invertebrate species were captured in survey tows. The species highest in total catch abundance (by weight) over the entire survey area were arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias), Pacific ocean perch (Sebates alutus), Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) and northern rockfish (Sebastes polyspinis). Survey results are presented including estimates of catch per unit of effort, biomass, population size composition, and length-weight relationships, as well as charts depicting the distribution of catch for commercially important species encountered during the survey.

Book excerpt: The Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering Division of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center conducts annual bottom trawl surveys to monitor the condition of the demersal fish and crab stocks of the eastern Bering Sea continental shelf. The standard study area encompasses a major portion of the eastern Bering Sea shelf (depths between 20 and 200 m) from the Alaska Peninsula north to approximately the latitude of St. Matthew Island (60° 50' N). In 2015, two chartered trawlers, the 38-m FV Vesteraalen and the 43.5-m FV Alaska Knight, surveyed this area. Demersal populations were sampled by trawling for 30 minutes at stations centered within 37.04 × 37.04 km (20 × 20 naultical mile (nmi)) grids covering the survey area. At each station, species composition of the catch was determined, and length distributions and age structure samples were collected from ecologically and commercially important species. Three-hundred seventy-six standard survey stations were sampled successfully. A total of 101 fish species and 235 invertebrate taxa were identified in catches from the EBS survey. The combined biomass of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus), Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), yellowfin sole (Limanda aspera), and northern rock sole (Lepidopsetta polyxystra) was estimated to be 10.8 million metric tons (t), which was 82% of the total fish biomass. The biomass of invertebrates was composed primarily of echinoderms (1.4 million t) and crustaceans (0.7 million t). Survey results presented in this report include abundance estimates for fishes and invertebrates, geographic distributions and size compositions of selected fish species, and contour plots of surface and bottom temperatures during the survey sampling period. Appendices provide station data, catch data summarized by station, taxon listings, and detailed analyses of abundance and biological data of the sampled populations. Book excerpt: The fourth biennial groundfish survey of groundfish and invertebrate resources of the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) was conducted during the summer of 2005 by the National Marine Fisheries Service's (NMFS) Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC). Scientists from the Groundfish Assessment Program of AFSC's Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division in Seattle, Washington, were responsible for the survey’s design and operations. The biennial regimen extends the series begun in 1984, previously conducted every 3 years between 1984 and 1999, which have provided a time series of distribution, abundance, and biological characteristics of GOA groundfish resources for the purpose of stock assessment and management. In this report, we document the operations and results of the 2005 GOA bottom trawl survey. Results of routine analyses of distribution, relative abundance, size composition, and biological characteristics are shown for the principal groundfish species in each of the five International North Pacific Fisheries Commission (INPFC) statistical areas in the GOA: Shumagin, Chirikof, Kodiak, Yakutat, and Southeastern. These results provide stock assessment scientists and resource managers the most current information to be used for subsequent stock assessments and fishery evaluations. Harvests of sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria, walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus, lingcod Ophiodon elongates, and Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus are managed by season for specific guideline harvest levels (GHL). Rockfish species (genera Sebastes and Sebastolobus) are managed collectively as bycatch to other directed fisheries. Miscellaneous groundfish species including flatfish, sharks, and skates, as well as shellfish species including octopus and squid, are also landed incidentally in the directed groundfish fisheries. ADF&G also has management authority of lingcod and black rockfish Sebastes melanops in federal waters of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from 3 nmi to 200 nmi offshore. The 2019 state-managed groundfish harvest totaled 8.0 million lb. The directed pollock trawl harvest was 6.5 million lb, 99% of the GHL. The total Pacific cod harvest from both parallel and state-waters fisheries was 0.5 million lb, the lowest since 2008 due to the decline in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) stock, associated federal quota, and corresponding GHL. The 2019 directed sablefish harvest of 85,796 lb was 64% of the 134,000 lb GHL, with a steadily increasing trend since the lowest harvest of 16,910 lb in 2015. In 2019, the rockfish harvest retained as bycatch to other directed fisheries was 71,976 lb, well below the historical average and less than half of the GHL, primarily due to the decrease in directed Pacific cod harvest. Lingcod harvest was 26,408 lb in 2019, similar to the historical average. In 2019, walleye pollock generated the highest exvessel value of $897,152, followed by Pacific cod at $266,291, and sablefish at $178,456; all groundfish harvested in PWS had a combined value of $1.4 million.
