Book excerpt: "The objective of the Walker River Subbasin Report is to contribute to comprehensive planning for the coordinated and orderly development, management, and use of water and related land resources of the subbasin. It is anticipated that the information presented in this report will: (1) identify the present and potential land and water problems and opportunities for solving them; (2) provide a basis for more effective coordination of U.S. Department of Agriculture resource programs with the related activities of each State and with other Federal agencies; (3) provide a sound basis for the development of water and related land resources by means of Public Law 566 projects for other programs; (4) indicate opportunities for development of water resources and the rehabilitation of depleted watersheds and rangelands of the national forest and public domain, as part of the multiple use programs for these Federal lands. This subbasin report includes: (1) an inventory of the natural resources; (2) an analysis of economic development; (3) a definition of the causes and extent of the resource problems; (4) an indication of present and future needs for resource development; (5) a short discussion of existing resource projects and programs; (6) a description of the resource development potential; (7) an indication of the opportunities for development under U.S. Department of Agriculture programs; and (8) suggested future programs and coordination needs among all groups and agencies. The natural resource inventory was supplemented by a detailed reconnaissance soil survey covering the subbasin. The results of the survey produced a broad but comprehensive summation of the subbasin's most basic resource, along with an interpretative tabulation of the hazards, limitations, and potentials for its use"--Page 1.
Book Synopsis Groundwater Depletion in the United States (1900?2008) by : Leonard F Konikow
Download or read book Groundwater Depletion in the United States (1900?2008) written by Leonard F Konikow and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A natural consequence of groundwater withdrawals is the removal of water from subsurface storage, but the overall rates and magnitude of groundwater depletion in the United States are not well characterized. This study evaluates long- term cumulative depletion volumes in 40 separate aquifers or areas and one land use category in the United States, bringing together information from the literature and from new analy- ses. Depletion is directly calculated using calibrated ground- water models, analytical approaches, or volumetric budget analyses for multiple aquifer systems. Estimated groundwater depletion in the United States during 1900-2008 totals approx- imately 1,000 cubic kilometers (km3). Furthermore, the rate of groundwater depletion has increased markedly since about 1950, with maximum rates occurring during the most recent period (2000-2008) when the depletion rate averaged almost 25 km3 per year (compared to 9.2 km3 per year averaged over the 1900-2008 timeframe).
Book Synopsis Ground-water Mining in the United States by : Gordon Sloggett
Download or read book Ground-water Mining in the United States written by Gordon Sloggett and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Ground-water levels are declining from 6 inches to over 5 feet annually beneath 14 million acres of irrigated land in 11 States irrigated mainly by ground water. Pumping costs are rising, and well yields are declining, causing farmers to adjust their irrigation practices. Farmers are adopting new irrigation technologies to improve irrigation efficiency and are changing to crops with lower water requirements in some areas. However, techniques for conserving ground water may not extend the life of aquifers. State and local governments have passed laws severely restricting further irrigation development in about 45 percent of the irrigated area affected by ground-water mining.
