Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ground Water in the Meriden Area, Connecticut Exposures of the bedrock underlying the glacial material were also noted (see. Pl. II, in pocket), but the' map of bedrock geology and its structure (pl. III, in pocket) is Copied with only slight changes from geologic maps of the region. Prepared by Davis 1 and by Gregory and Robinson. 2 This map of the bedrock structure is reprodzueed with the present Ie-por-t because it Is believed that it will be of assistance to property owners and to drillers In forecasting the kind of material that will be encountered in drilling wells. Throughout the area the successive rock formations are presentin the order in which they are shown in the legend Ot Plate III. The first rock encountered at any place in the area' will: be that indicated by the color at that point on the map, and this rock is in most places successively underlain by the other formations in the order indicated in the legend. Fer example, in sinking wells in the City of Meriden the first rock reached is the lower sandstone, and this material continues for many hundred feet down to the ancient crystalline rocks, except, possibly, where it Inay be interrupted by dike rocks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Underground Water Resources of Connecticut: With a Study of the Occurrence of Water in Crystalline Rocks With the exception of those compiled from the Land Office plats no maps of this area have been published. Since a topographic base is essential to a careful study of underground water conditions as affected by drainage basins and rock structures, the accompanying map (pl. II, in pocket) has been prepared from all available data, and from field observations made during the course of the examination. This work was secondary to the main purpose of the investigation, and it is realized that there are many inaccuracies in it, but for the purpose of showing the main elements of the relief and drainage and their relations, and as a basis for a study of ground-water conditions, the map is considered to be sufficiently trustworthy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Town and City of Waterbury, Connecticut, Vol. 3: From the Aboriginal Period to the Year Eighteen Hundred and Ninety-Five The Baptist and Methodist movements, whatever their origin may have been, were American; they found their chief field and did their chief work amidst the native American population. The same is true of Adventism, half a century later. But the establish ment of Roman Catholicism and Lutheranism in the town must be explained in a different way, - as a natural result of the Irish immi gration in the one case and the later German and Swedish immigrations in the other. The Irish immigration has been so extensive, the irish-american stock so productive, the Roman Catholic church so strong in its grasp upon its own people, and the administration of its affairs so thorough and successful, that it is now not only larger than any other denomination in the town, it probably exceeds all the others taken together. Of late years its place in the community has been still further strengthened by the incoming of immigrants from southern Europe and from Canada, and by the establishment of Roman Catholic schools and societies.
