Book Synopsis Analysis of a Coupled Roll-spiral-mode, Pilot-induced Oscillation Experienced with the M2-F2 Lifting Body by : Robert W. Kempel
Download or read book Analysis of a Coupled Roll-spiral-mode, Pilot-induced Oscillation Experienced with the M2-F2 Lifting Body written by Robert W. Kempel and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 16 glide flights of the M2 -F2 lifting body vehicle, severe lateral pilot-induced oscillations occurred on three occasions in the low - angle of -attack, final-approach, preflare situation. These oscillations were analyzed qualitatively to determine the type and similarity and by a systems analysis to determine the root cause. The analysis was complemented by a piloted simulator study, which verified the results. The systems analysis revealed the presence of a coupled roll-spiral mode which caused the pilots to generate a closed-loop lateral instability in the low-angle -of -attack, preflare flight region. A systems analysis, a piloted simulator study, and flight data showed that the addition of a fixed center fin lessened the pilot-induced-oscillation tendencies in the critical flight region.

Book Synopsis Handling Qualities in Single-loop Roll Tracking Tasks by : T. S. Durand
Download or read book Handling Qualities in Single-loop Roll Tracking Tasks written by T. S. Durand and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systems analysis theory of aircraft handling qualities is applied to the task of closed-loop compensatory roll tracking by ailerons alone, and exploratory experiments in a fixed-based simulator are used to verify and refine the theory. The analysis refines and extends the earlier theory of McRuer and Ashkenas, shows the dominant role of the basic spiral roll mode closure in determining the Dutch roll mode interactions, and describes the implications of these interactions on closed-loop tracking performance, pilot-adopted equalization, and probable handling qualities ratings. The key theoretical parameters evolved are: dominant closed-loop spiral roll mode frequency and damping ratio; average Dutch roll frequency; Dutch roll frequency ratio; uncompensated closed-loop Dutch roll damping ratio; and Dutch roll phase dip. The simulator results corroborated the theory and give specific values for the variation in ratings and performance with these parameters. Certain observations of nonsteady pilot behavior, interaction between input cut-off frequencies and Dutch roll dynamics, effects of other tasks such as step-aileron rolls using ailerons plus rudder, and extrapolation of single-loop results to the multiloop flight situation are discussed.

Book Synopsis A Flight Investigation of Lateral-directional Handling Qualities for V/STOL Aircraft in Low Speed Maneuvering Flight by : Karl-Heinz Doetsch
Download or read book A Flight Investigation of Lateral-directional Handling Qualities for V/STOL Aircraft in Low Speed Maneuvering Flight written by Karl-Heinz Doetsch and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation to determine the ranges of various lateral directional characteristics required to provide adequate flying qualities for turning maneuvers at low speed was undertaken using an airborne V/STOL aircraft simulator. Five parameters were varied in a systematic manner: the damping ratio, the frequency, and the ratio and the frequency of the numerator of the roll-angle to aileron-control-input transfer function. The pilots performed a low speed, visual maneuvering task and documented their assessment of the characteristics through extensive comments and a numerical rating. The report presents all the data categorized with respect to the test parameters. (Author).

Book Synopsis Airplane Stability and Control by : Malcolm J. Abzug
Download or read book Airplane Stability and Control written by Malcolm J. Abzug and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early machines to today's sophisticated aircraft, stability and control have always been crucial considerations. In this second edition, Abzug and Larrabee again forge through the history of aviation technologies to present an informal history of the personalities and the events, the art and the science of airplane stability and control. The book includes never-before-available impressions of those active in the field, from pre-Wright brothers airplane and glider builders through to contemporary aircraft designers. Arranged thematically, the book deals with early developments, research centers, the effects of power on stability and control, the discovery of inertial coupling, the challenge of stealth aerodynamics, a look toward the future, and much more. It is profusely illustrated with photographs and figures, and includes brief biographies of noted stability and control figures along with a core bibliography. Professionals, students, and aviation enthusiasts alike will appreciate this readable history of airplane stability and control.

Book Synopsis In-flight Simulation, Theory and Application by : Edwin A. Kidd
Download or read book In-flight Simulation, Theory and Application written by Edwin A. Kidd and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation techniques are applied to the problems of determining aircraft handling qualities. Analog computers, fixed-base simulators, and various other ground machines are discussed. In particular, the theory and actual techniques of in-flight simulators of the variable-stability type are considered. The conclusion is drawn that the solution of the various problems of handling-qualities requirements and of control systems development requires the use of ground-based simulators and in-flight simulators as complementary tools.
